DEDICATION Deciding who the recipients of the 1977 yearbook would be was very difficult. Before doing so, the Senior Class considered all the fine qualities the recipient should possess and decided it should be an individual that has spent alot of time with us and was creative with activities. Someone that was involved, someone that helped to guide us and someone that was alot of fun to be with. The Senior Class has been fortunate enough to find two teachers with these qualifica¬ tions. So we, the Class of ’77, have decided to go our own way and dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Dutton and Mr. Marcoux. Having signed, sealed, and witnessed this document, we the Class of 1977, do hereby declare it to be our Last Will and Testament on this 8th day of June in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and seventy-seven. Signed in Witness of: The MINKY and Jimmy “Peanut” Carter. Attest: Brad Allen Diane Burtchell rs. j r CLASS DAY THE CLASS PROPHECY It’s that time of year again. Time to read the class prophecy. It’s usually done by two people each taking turns reading a few lines or so (at a time), and it’s usually too long and only the seniors get the jokes, (if anyone). The mike never seems to work, and you can always count on the end where all the names of the kids no one knows anything about, are jammed together, be¬ cause you have to use all the names. This year we thought we’d go along with that same routine so here ... we ... go. The year is 2002 and it is our 25th reunion party. After most of the people had arrived, Speaker Carl Smith (voted probably the best person to come out of Leicester), welcomed everyone to the reunion. Almost immediately the conversations began. Did you read in Lynn Higgins gossip column that Robin Doldo married Lee Patricks? Gerry LaPine had an unsuccessful career as a Barber and Lynn Burlingame didn’t make it as a Fashion Model either. Suddenly the lights dimmed. As soon as it got dark, Porky and Winkle slipped out back for a quick one. Carl announced that thanks to David Bock, we’d be showing old films of Leices¬ ter High School accompanied by our faithful school band, which by now was down to only Linda Riopel on clarinet and Bill Carkin on trumpet. The films got boring after watching 5 minutes of nothing but football movies showing Bill Hassett tackling his sister, head cheerleader, Patty Burtchell. The movie was interrupted when the aroma of food filled the air, and Mike Carkin lead everyone in a mad dash to the table. The food was originally planned to be gourmet style prepared by Karen Dorr but when she burned everything, we had to settle for Don Corey’s Luigi’s Pizza. After the meal, we found out what every¬ one had been doing the past 25 years. John Bailey is now in the cookie business. His latest is the “Big Bailey Bar”. It’s a mixture of Oreo’s, M M’s, jellybeans, axle grease and pocket lint. They’re not selling well, since he’s eating all the profits. Anne and Annette Robert and Tiffany Barnes went into a similar occupation, they became bakers. Judy Cherry and Jimmy Moughan went into the taxi business. Did you ever ride in a beach wagon? Donna Daigle and Richard Lemerise donated their hair to Kojak. Mary Dorr and Paula Bigwood tried out for the parts on the remake of Laverne and Shirley, but Donna Liberty and Cynthia Paipulas got them. Karen Comeau had by now placed herself in charge of attendance for the party and had taken down the names of those who didn’t show. Apparently Lois Leveillee, Betsy Cocker, Nancy Daigle, and Cindy McGee had stayed home because they couldn’t get babysitters. Every¬ body could hear Debbie Carey, Cindy Gallant, Ellen Madore, Becky Granville, and Cherl Lloyd laughing in the bathroom; so loud, in fact, that it drew attention away from Dana Giggey across the room with Kevin Sawicki. Mark Ring who had by now learned to hold it in, still couldn’t handle the shouts of Bill Conley and others yelling TUBA-BLUBA, TUBA-BLUBA. This now set the pace for Cheryl O’Donnell’s dance to “Stair¬ way to Heaven” accompanied by Jimmy Paige on Guitar. The music was so good that everyone decided to join in. First on the floor was Brad Allen dancing with Sue Tolman, who was now taller than he. Kerry McMenemy was once again closely following Brad’s every footstep. Sharon LaMonda, Susan For¬ tin, and Dianne Pengilly would rather listen to Joe Pike’s stories than dance. Gary McGee and Debbie Yurick, and Brian and Cindy Taberner were waiting for the slow dancing to start. The dances were interrupted by a strange phone call. Bob Martin ran to answer it. “Cherry Valley Building II, pupil speaking”. Im¬ mediately Ken Mantha passed his hat around to take up a collection for Gail Williams. Luckily there hadn’t been any trouble between family mem¬ bers in our class during the party, such as Phillip and Michael LaMarche, Mary Anne and Paul Hallen, Doug and Michael Foy, except for Pam and Dennis Menard who both swore that they weren’t brother and sister. Meanwhile tending the bar Dianne Burtchell and Carey Brown checked Mark Gordon’s I.D.; then ran over to calm down Keith Batstone who was up on a table imitating Elvis. His version of “You ain’t nothing but a hounddog” offended Beth Berryman so much that she stomped out of the place. John Halley’s Polish jokes caused Janine Baniukeiwicz, Gail Caika and Tommy Dolengiewicz to be offended, but not as much as when Tina Moore cracked jokes about Weston Griffis, Dennis Meehan and Audrey Higgens getting their Gar-animals all mix¬ ed up. To lighten up the evening Linda Laincz would now announce the winner of the door prize. As we waited around for her to get to the point, our attention was drawn out front to where Tony Piscopo and Randy Russell were smashing up Bob Sooji- an’s refreshment stand with their motorcycles. June Colby stopped laughing long enough to call the law — Ken Law that is, and when Toot jumped on the back of one of the bikes it went out of control and plowed into both Lynda Ryan and Paul Garrity. They had to be rushed to Nancy Isralian and Penny Pierce for cosmetic surgery. Meanwhile, Caroline Johnston, Pattie Larson and Anna Davenport were quickly finishing off what was left of the refreshment stand. As we finally went back inside, Linda was just getting to the winner of the door prize. David Flink got all excited when he found he had won a trip to the Bahamas with the famous movie actress Debbie Went¬ worth. When Donna Brunnett was typing out the plane tickets though, she discovered there had been an error; it was David Flint not David Flink. Suddenly Julie Carlson, Michelle Power and Ellen McCue started screaming FIRE! It seems that Bob Cook and Donnie Stephens thought it would be a good practical joke to set Ralph Michaels’ chair on fire. Mike Antanavica rushed for the fire extinguisher but tripped over Pam Saunders white marching boots. By now he was so mixed up he just aimed for the nearest bright red objects, which happened to be the heads of Steve Allain and Jeff Bedard. Luckily the chair was insured by Hale and McGrail Insurance Agency. Gail Johnston now took over the mike and began asking who lived the farthest away. The Sandy’s (Manseau and McFarland) said that they lived at the beach, but then Gary Sundstrom lives under the water itself, scuba diving for Joel Martin’s teeth. Mark Reidy claimed that he last sighted Paul Bigwood, alias Bigfoot, some¬ where out in the Pacific Northwest. But David Lekstrom won the prize for coming all the way from Mars on a flying saucer, reminding us all that this is the year 2002 and it’s beginning to look a lot like the days of the “Jetson’s”. He even stopped on his way to see George about a Cogswell Cog. David also told us that he was on his way to see Terri Buffone at Hot Dog Annie’s, but he couldn’t find either of course, we all know that it was renamed. Now we all wanted Mary Anne Cote to make the farewell speech, but before she had a chance, Beth Goodrow told Paul Lafayette, Joe Harris, and Doug Morin to please call in. By now the reunion was coming to a close and Philip Burke passed out Linette’s Trainquillizers to everybody. Still no sign of John Bernatchez, Glenn Guertin, and Eddy McCarthy, but we decided to end it anyway. As the janitors were closing up three hours later, who came knocking on the door but Marcy Rand all ready for the reunion. As Freshmen, we were not bewildered and frightened, instead we acquired a taste of upperclassmanship, for once again we were faced with double sessions. We were fortunate to receive a nourishing, gourmet lunch, such as peanut butter and marshmallow on slightly stale bread and a peanut butter square all conveniently placed in a brown paper bag. Speaking of convenience and the cafeteria, we remember well those handy baskets for our books which were frequently relieved of their contents when the owner was away for over five minutes. Even though there were no class officers, we did have homeroom representatives. What they did and who they were is still a mystery. As far as fund raising went; it went. As Sophomores, we were reduced to lower classmen. The trial of double sessions terminated and the trial of rising with the sun commenced. For the first time, we were able to nominate and elect officers; President — Donald Corey, Vice-President — Donna Daigle, Secretary — Lynn Higgins, and Treasurer — Bryan Taberner. Our advisor was Miss O’Neil. Fund raising activities included a car wash and a bake sale where half the products were consumed by the car washers. We were faced with the financial responsibility of class dues, which were 25 a week. Even with a deficit from our Freshman year, we managed to raise a fair amount of money which was immediately depleted as a result of our class trip to Ocean Beach. There were also some new additions to our school; new furniture for our cafeteria, colorful lockers of yellow, orange and red, and a not-so-thin principal. At the beginning of our Junior year, there were new officers; President — Lynn Higgins, Vice-President — Brad Allen, Secretary — Donna Daigle, and Treasurer — James Moughan. Our advisors were Mrs. Dutton and Mr. Marcoux. As did the cost of living, our class dues also rose from 25 to 5CV a week. Fund raising activities proved to be successful. These included a flea market, bake sales, and a pancake breakfast. Most successful was the spaghetti supper highlighted by our infamous extremely rare meatballs. We received our rings and, through our excitement, we removed them from our fingers and replaced them a great number of times. Eventually and inevitably fingers became swollen. Those students who were wearing their rings couldn’t remove them and those who weren’t, couldn’t replace them. In sports, the football team, through spirited team effort, became the Telegram and Gazette Class C Champions. The girls’ softball team qualified for the districts; and in doing so, they had an exciting moment when they defeated the previous year’s state champions. May 9, 1976 was a most memorable night at the Sheraton-Sturbridge Inn, our Junior Prom with its theme being “The Long and Winding Road’’. Judy Cherry was chosen as queen; her court consisted of Lynn Higgins, Nancy Daigle, Carey Brown, and Betsy Cocker. We gathered many good memories as a result of this night and when we departed, the Sheraton-Sturbridge had gathered a few unforgettable memories also. This year, our Senior year, there were some more additions to the school. Among them were new faculty members, a matron, and a thin principal. And speaking of principals, we must have set a record for having so many in such a short time. During the eighth grade, we had Mr. Poloski who enstated the activity period. In our Freshman year, we had Mr. Prince and the beginning of the Sophomore year, we had Mr. Clifford. Finally, Mr. Toepfer came to stay in December of our Sophomore year. The class officers and the advisors remained the same with the exception of the new Vice-President, Dana Giggey. The cost of class dues was also the same. Fund raising proved to be very profitable. Most successful was the class play, “The Beverly Hillbillies”, and also proven was the fact that acting was meant for only a chosen few in this world, and they’re not from Leicester. Our class sold refreshments at this play as well as the football games. Unfortunately, our spaghetti supper was not as successful as anticipated. It seems the remembrance of raw meatballs stuck in the back of the minds of last year’s customers. During the course of the year, Mr. LaPlante and his Maroons worked busily to prepare our yearbook. The football team this year was tri-captained by Bill Hassett, Tom Dolengiewicz, and Terry Lauder. It was called a rebuilding year since last year a majority of the starting line graduated. The team lost to Prouty Thanksgiving Day for the first time in 7 years by a disappointing score of 7-0, ending the season with a record of 2-7-1. The basketball team, co-captained by Carl Smith and Mark Reidy, didn’t set any winning record, but they 104 I did manage to defeat Prouty twice. As a silver lining to that grey cloud, the girls’ basketball team, co-captained by Lynn Higgins and Patty Dykas, earned the right to be the District Three Division II Champions for the first time in the history of Leicester High. Their season terminated with a fantastic record of 16-7 and next year’s team looks to be more promising. To add to the silver lining, the cross country team was fortu¬ nate enough to be able to send a member, Junior Rich Wall, to the state finals. Baseball and softball also had some exciting moments and, for the first time, a tennis team was started with Mr. Hippert as coach. On Monday, April 18, 42 happy and lively Leicester High students climbed aboard a bus and departed for Washington, D C. The trip was chaperoned by Mrs. Dutton, Ms. Tournas, Mr. Marcoux, Mr. LaPlante, and Mr. Chasse. The following two days were fully occupied with touring and sightseeing the city. (Follow the lady with the umbrella and a carnation in her teeth.) Glancing out the windows of the bus, we saw many sights, some very strange. The nights were fully occupied also. Unfortunately, Thursday arrived rapidly and the students, who were no longer happy and lively, crawled aboard their bus and an extremely long journey for Leicester began. Upon the commencement of school after spring vacation, we busily prepared for the dinner dance. It was held on Friday, June the third at Pleasant Valley. It was a strange but memora¬ ble night as the last formal gathering of the Seniors, and we left Pleasant Valley with a few memories of our visit. June the sixth was our day, Class Day, where we assembled for the last time before graduation. Excitement filled the air as we prepared ourselves for our greatest and most memorable event. On the arrival of June the eighth, we realized that it came rapidly even though the school year seemed to have lasted for ages The graduation of the Class of 1977 will be long remem¬ bered We were released to conquer the world with our acquired knowledge and experience.
