MP0MM| ■ ' fflWIJP Class Of 1976 The Maroon 1 IN MEMORY OF EDWARD J. BOULE As Leicester High assistant principal from 1949 to 1975, Mr. Edward J. Boule truly showed students the way, the truth, and the life. He was a good and decent man, so compassionate, kind, and understanding. His dealings with students were always from the heart. As Fr. George Bissonette, A.A., said in his eulogy July 17, 1975, the day of Mr. Boule’s funeral, “Ed was so sincere that he couldn’t stand the hint of hypocrisy in anyone.” He leveled with students. They respected him for it and consequently they admired him. Almost three decades of Leicester High students were beneficiaries of the sound counsel and constructive discipline that he imparted in such a quiet way and dignified manner. Mr. Boule recognized high school for what it truly is: The most formative four-year period in the precious life of a youngster. It’s a rich legacy that he has left behind for the youth of Leicester. We thank God that this gentle man crossed our paths. We met him, and we’re the better for it. God be with him forever and ever. I Administration Guidance Director Office Staff Mr. Dean Toepfer Mr. Donald Rutter Mr. John Comer Mr. Paige Rowden Mr. William Sipos Betty Sherman Mrs. Pat Bukoski Mrs. Marilyn Hyland Dedication Have you ever had the feeling that someone was in back of you, always watching with a careful eye and following at a distance, but never so far as to be out of speaking range? The Class of’76 has been blessed with such a someone. As a matter of fact, that someone has been watching and following, occasionally whispering a few words of advice, but generally letting us test our own ground, for the past 4 years. In those 4 years we’ve grown together, and it is in that growth that we can see that someone, and realize with greater clarity than ever before, his true meaning to our class. This someone has developed in us, as a class, an independent and self-disciplined spirit by means of his quiet, yet firm guidance. He has also instilled in us the ability to assume increased responsibility for our own actions and the pride of self accomplishment attained when these actions prove to be the correct ones. It is for all these things and many more that we dedicate our yearbook to Mr. George Albro, the Class of’76’s special SOMEONE. But as destiny would have it, he did, and so begins our little tale: It all began in the summer of 1985 with Spencer wielding supreme executive power over 2 3 of Leicester. It was their lust and greed for the remaining one third (Cherry Valley), that made them want to create an Atom Bomb to try to threaten them into submission. Collaborating closely with the Town of Oxford, Spencer succeeded in creating the bomb and by the end of August 1985, they had complete control over all of Leicester. Just as a precautionary measure, Spencer officials appointed SCOTT TABERNER as governor of the newly acquired territory, to quell any possible rebellions. Things were going fine until one night when, Steve Saunders was sweeping up in the Atom Bomb Control Room, Located in the staff conference room at David Prouty High School. While trying to get some green sweeping compound out of a corner Steve accidently hit the bomb detonation button with his broom handle. With a flash of light and a thunderous BOOM all of Leicester was leveled. At the time of the blast, Sue and I were both in the Leicester Library looking up dirty words in the dictionary. The minute we ran out of the front door to see what had happened, we realized that we were more than likely the only survivors left in Leicester. The library seemed to be the only structure that remained intact; everything else seemed to be completely decimated. We decided to search the area for possible survivors. Sue and I started walking toward what used to be Leicester Center. All of a sudden we heard a deafening scream for help. We ran toward the commotion and found KATHY “BURNING” so we put her out with EDDIE WATTERS. It was nothing serious; only her shirt tail on fire. We heard another scream and we found out that JOY “BYRNES”, well also . . . We journeyed toward where the Town Hall once stood. There we found ANN NASH, slightly mashed; DAVE LABRIE in the debris; and BRAD PORTER in a state of disorder . . . We asked Joy and Kathy to help us with the three survivors, but they were too shaken up to do anything. TOMMY “WOOD”, but ... he was shaken up also. As we continued our search, we found MISS ANDERSON sitting on a pile Prophecy of rubble that once was her “Barbara Shop.” It seems she was giving MICHAEL WADE a haircut at the time of the explosion. RAY WARD and JOHN PAIGE would have been next in line but . . . Next we found CHRISS HARRIS in a daze and shaking her head saying repeatedly “I told them not to play with matches ... I told them.” Wher the Women’s Boutique” once stood, we found JIMMY FOY “Lumpy,” but, in otherwise fair condition. We also found MARRY BARRY, MARY ANN SEAL, and AMY MacGREGOR in the same place, they were purchasing clothes in the boutique just before the blast. Next, Sue and I found DICKY DAIGLE in a little case of mistaken identity. It seems that he was trying to knock down MICHAEL DORR. As soon as we straightened Dicky’s head out, LISA BEAUREGARD came running up to us and said JUNE KOBEL is in the fallout shelter at the Town Hall. She thinks there was an air raid! June said she heard an air raid siren but we realized that she had mistaken SUE BERNATCHEZ’S hound dog howl for the siren. Meanwhile, at what used to be Irish’s Mobile Station, PAUL MORRIS, KEN ANTANIVICA and TOM SOUTHARD, were working frantically, trying to separate MARGARET NIEMELA from her Harley Davidson. Sue and I then proceeded to walk down Pleasant Street toward Rochdale. As we passed the remains of Hillcrest Country Club, we noticed that the three resident golf pros; MATT STEPHENS, FRAN BUCKLEY and PETE CARMADA were putting on the 10th green. So great was their concentration, that the destruction of Leicester went completely unnoticed. What we saw on the 14th green was even more bizarre: It appeared that Rev. BOB DEPATIE was conducting a funeral for BOB AND CARL LARSON’S snowmobiles. Crying bitterly at the graveside were FRAN BRENNAN and ROSCOE BURTCHELL. After STEVE REIL read the will, PETER BRENNAN lowered the snowmobiles into their final resting place. As we continued down Pleasant Street, we got our first glimpse of Rochdale since the bomb. It didn’t look any different than before since it always appeared to be in ruins anyway. At Rochdale Park we found TOM LILLEY barefoot, trying to drum up a little basketball game against MERRICK JARMULOWICZ. PAUL ASQUITH and JIM HENNESSY were going to play, but they were “temporarily absent.” ANDY PAIPULAS said he would play as soon as he finished arm wrestling with PAULA MANCINI. The situation at Rochdale Park rather confused Sue and me. “Don’t you know that a bomb destroyed Leicester?” They asked in unison, we thought it was EDDY GALLAGHER’S booming serve!” “I thought it was LORI LAPLANTE’S booming serve,” squeaked Eddy. “You KNOW IT! Piped in Lori. Meanwhile ROCKY HYLAND was busy rescuing TIM FRIEND from the depths of Rochdale Pond. Reddy was whale hunting in NORMA ROBIDOUX and HEIDI DOANE’S life raft, when the explosion capsized it. Across the baseball field we saw BOB FLAGG wave. After leaving the Park we proceeded up Stafford Street until we came to Rt. 56. To our amazement we found DON ADAMS, MARK DORAY and HERVE LEVALLEE driving under 55 m.p.h. It seems that the bomb affected the fuel mechanisms in their cars. The bomb had a worse effect on JOAN SKAGERLIND, SUE ROLLINS and DAWN TORTE’S horses; they wouldn ' t move at all. 106 As we proceeded down Dead Horse Hill we came upon the remains of the MIKE BACHAND Memorial Hospital. In one of the still standing rooms, we found Mike performing emergency surgery with Nurse “Killer” alias DEBBIE WALL and blood n’ guts DONNA PELOQUIN assisting. Mike was attempting to transplant DARLENE COTE’S mouth onto SHARON MAYO’S head. Suddenly we saw BOB BURQUE chasing his roosters down the street screaming “come back here you good for nothing egg-layers, In close pursuit was MIKE O’DONNELL singing his rooster song, and LORI JOHNSON trying her best to shut him up. WAYNE WITKOWSKI snickered. We passed what used to be WAYNE TUSKALA ' S house and found him mumbling something about missing the end of a Bruce Lee movie. It seemed that the explosion really had an adverse affect upon the minds of roller derby stars SUE SAWYER and DEBBIE ROGERS. They were making a futile attempt to roller skate up Stafford Street. We were just about to quit searching for the day when KEVIN McMENEM Y and CINDY JONES came bombing along on their motor cycles, and offered us a ride. Since we wanted to know who was alive in town, we accepted. Sue and I arrived in the little known section of Leicester called Cherry Valley at 4:00 p.m. Contrary to the popular belief, this section of town was not named after the notorious CHERRY brothers, JIMMY and MARK. It was-a sad sight to see Hennessy’s Bar and Cafe in ruins. The owner MADDY HENNESSY was outside crying hysterically. Gathered around her and sharing her grief were some of her employees, HANET DEPARI and ANDREA POLITO, who were the guitar and piano combination; JAMES HEBERT who used to do his DON RICKLES ' impersonation for the Cafe. STEVE FAVREAU professional wine-taster. DONNA McGURN who was the go-go- dancer and GI GI GRIMSHAW the head waitress. The next place that we stopped was the legendary Schlitz Dam. We found the dam in a rather shakey condition; it having many small holes and leaking profusely. Trying to plug up the Dam were LORI MOBERG and “Bogart” JEFF BELANGER. Also lending a hand was LYNN LUCIER who was futiley trying to reach a hole in the dam six feet high. We also knew that this was the place that DAVE LIBERTY and KATHY ZAMOITA used to loiter but they were no where to be seen. Trying to relay this dramatic scene to the outside world was STEVE WESTER, clutching frantically at his microphone. DAVE BARUS was trying desperately to tug the microphone away from Steve so he could repair it. As we were leaving the scene at Schlitz Dam, we encountered a rather strange sight. The bomb didn ' t seem to affect AMY EARL, RENEE LANGLOIS and PATTY DAWE, who were walking down the street singing “we-are-a-little-bit-crazy!” They proceeded down the street until they picked up KATHY at the “CONNOR”. Like wise the bomb didn’t effect MARY CLIFFORD who was selling ice-cream as usual. A little farther up Main Street PEGGY CONLEY was holding a march protesting the bomb. Using the protest as an instrument to relate their own individual views, was EILEEN GRADY chanting “Red head or dead . . . Red head or dead!” and DARLENE JAROBSKI; protesting discrimination against polacks whose last names begins with “J”. Our next stop was the Little Bo-Peep Day Care Center. There we found CHERYL JOSEPH wrestling with WAYNE GREENHALGE. The bomb seemed to jostle Wayne’s head to the extent that he was under the misconception that he belonged in the nursery. Finally, DONALD SIELIS carted poor Wayne away in his volks wagon. After the little episode at Little Bo-Peep, we arrived at the remains of FRANK BOVE’S underworld Gambling Casino. The “front” for his illegal operation consisted of DEBBIE THIEBEAULT and DENISE TRANQUE’S Curiosity Shop. The people in this area were still shook up by the explosion: We found LINDA “HALPIN” GALE ESTEY off the ground, and the three La’s DIANE LAYFAYETTE, LINDA LAPAGE, and DENISE LAPOINTE, a singing trio for the Casino. Trying to boost morale by doing some of their current hits. MICHAEL DELLA CAVE, the chief bookey, was picking up poker chips that were strewn about. CHERYL KERR, the cigarette lady, spotted ROSEMARY MONTVILLE sitting alone in a vacant lot about 2 miles away. From this distance, she looked no bigger than a “molecule.” Having seen enough of Cherry Valley, Sue and I started up Main Street back toward the Center. We found DONALD PELOQUIN sweeping up the remains of St. Joseph’s School. Outside in the playground, we saw EILEEN O’LEARY playing basketball in her denim dress and sandals as if nothing had ever happened. Passing the Little League Field, we spied DAN HOVAGIMIAN holding down third base as usual. When we arrived again at the Center we found LISA MacLEOD and JANE MICHEALS outside of the Leicester Pharmacy selling Alka Seltzer and singing Plop Plop Fizz Fizz. At that moment, we saw NAOMI STETSON walking up the street beating her drum followed by DEBBIE MANSEAU who was bearing a tattered L.H.S. 1976 flag. “What happened?”, asked a shocked CHRIS KROYAK. We just got bombed — where were you?”, we asked in unison. Oh, SUE ORSI, MARY SLIWINSKI and I were up at Hampton Beach. We were going to stay a week, but the management didn’t appreciate our company. Having accounted for all the survivors in Leicester, Sue and I came to the logical conclusion that the 1976 Senior High School Class are the only people who can get “bombed” and still survive. SUE WITT MARK JAMES 107 Graduation Salutatorian Orator Valedictorian 109 I r rP !• History CLASS HISTORY As we prepare to leave Leicester High, let’s call a time out, and look back on the 4 brief, but very rewarding years we’ve spent here. Upon entering the high school as Freshmen in that fall of 72, we caught our first glimpse of high school life — leaky roofs, no more lines, strange growths on the ceiling, a dying intercom, hot dogs and more hot dogs. This was the first year of double sessions and we were caught in the afternoon session along with the 7th and 8th graders. We weren’t allowed to take part in the high school activities but thanks to our principal Mr. Ploski we started a few of our o wn. Our Freshmen football team coached by Mr. Nelson and captained by Jim Hennessy, Jim Lloyd, and Mike Dorr posted a 5-1 record and opened the path for us to get a Freshmen basketball team. The team got a late start but with Mr. Binienda at the helm, rolled to a 6-1 record and made people at the high school start to think that the future could still be bright for Leicester sports. Go¬ ing to school in the afternoon did hamper us a little, we had no class officers and no advisor. We didn’t let it bother us though because we had our sights set on our Sophomore year. We would be in the morning session and finally part of the high school. After an all too short summer, we were back in school for our Sophomore year. We made no money as Freshmen, so we knew that now was the time to get started. So with Mr. Albro as our advisor we elected our class officers. Pres., Scott Taberner; V.P., Lori LaPlante; Sec., Donna Peloquin; and Treas., GiGi Grimshaw. Their first jobs were to organize a car wash which gave us our first money and set the fuse. Near the end of that year we had our class trip. Two Worcester buses took about 90 innocent Sophomores to Nantasket Beach on what turned out to be one of the hottest, muggiest days of the year. That year in order to make money we sponsored a car wash, 2 concerts, a basketball game matching the boys var¬ sity and the men teachers. In sports that year we saw new coaches in all the boys sports. The football team under Mr. Nelson posted a 3-5-1 record but finished the season with a big win over Prouty. The basketball team with Mr. Chasse taking over the reins was plagued with injuries but did salvage an 8-13 record. The baseball team with Mr. Buckley at the helm finished at 7-11, but scored a big win over SWCL cham¬ pions, Grafton High. While the boys sports were rebuilding, the girls basketball team was sky high. They made it to the Clark Tournament, the district playoffs and were the SWCL co-champs. The highlight of the Junior year had to be the Prom, which was held at the Chateau De Ville, Sue Witt was chosen as queen and her court consisted of Lori Johnson, Sue Saw¬ yer, Lynn Lucier, and Patty Dawe. After returning from our summer jobs, vacations or both, we arrived at Leicester High only to realize that we were seniors, unbelievably enough we had finally made it. This year started off to the cries of “Sell Yearbooks!” “Get Ads!” and “Pay your Dues!” Mr. Albro came up with us to be our Senior class advisor. Under his guidance we elected our Se¬ nior class officers. Pres., Scott Taberner; V.P., Lynn Lucier; Sec., Mary Sliwinski; and Treas., Dick Daigle. The year went by all too fast and before we knew it, we were putting on our class play, entitled “1776 AND ALL THAT.” This proved to many people that a career in acting should not be pursued. Next came hectic plans for our senior class trip to Wash¬ ington, with 52 seniors attending. With the help of Jim our bus driver, our guide Mary Poppins and our great chaper¬ ones: Mr. Albro, Miss Morin, Mr. LaPlante, Mrs. Keenan and Mr. Hippert, we began our fun. Monday night found everyone switching rooms, and after Mr. Albro broke up the parties, we went to bed at a reasonably indecent hour. Tuesday and Wednesday were spent on tours always ending up waiting for someone who couldn’t seem to keep Mary Poppins umbrella in sight. Tuesday and Wednesday nights were quiet, with no one doing anything out of the ordinary. Despite the fact that Mr. Albro patrolled the grounds and the other chaperones took care of everything, we had a real good time. After a long ride home on Thursday, we all arrived in Leicester, exhausted and broke - wishing we were back in Washington. This was a better year for sports. The football team cap- ained by Rocky Hyland and Bob Depatie went 8-1-1 and :aptured the Telegram and Gazette Class C title. The field ! iockey team led by Deb Wall and Lynn Lucier had a great ' ear and for the first time ever made it to the districts. Cross Country co-captain, Dick Daigle and Jim Hebert had to ;o with a young team, but still made a good showing. The oys basketball team led by Jim Foy and the girls basket- - all team led by Renee Langlois and Kathy Burning had ; flood years but couldn’t quite make the districts. The soft- all team captained by Kathy Connor and Lisa Beauregard, ualified for the districts. The baseball team captained by n| :n| - Steve Wester and Dave Labrie, the gold team led by Matt Stephens, and the track team captained by Dick Daigle and Jim Hebert produced some exciting moments. Tonight we will have our last social function as students at Leicester High — Our Senior Dinner Dance. It will be held at the Holden House Country Club. Thursday, as we graduate, we’ll be leaving a lot of memories in these hall¬ ways, remembrances that stay forever. Since the end of World War II, we have lived in the era of “The Great Age of Change”. It should be the goal of each of us in The Class of 1976 to see to it that this change is for good, that tomorrow will be brighter than today, that feuding nations will become brothers in peace. Our prayers will be directed toward the end. GOLD STAR PATRON A. B. Dick Co. of Worcester Bagdon Surabian Adv. Leslie P. Bembridge Buckley Auto Body Cormier Jewelers Edward J.
