Signed in witness of: Betsy DesChenes Richard LaChapelle i Senior Dinner-Dance White Cliffs Northboro June 4, 1974 We will now attempt to take you through time for a brief, but serious look into the future. The year - 1984. The place - An office building in Washington, D.C. It was a typical business day. I glanced at the calendar on my desk - June 3 - felt like it was going to be one of those days. I pulled out the top drawer of my desk and took out my Daily Assignment Notebook and thumbed through the pages, breathlessly awaiting to see what lucky hospital my assistant, Tina Nelson, and I would be in¬ specting today. Oh no - it can ' t be! Again I read it slowly. I immediately called Tina into my office. Here read this! Oh no, not Emerson Memorial Hospital! I thought they shut that place down? I thought so too - well let ' s go, it ' s getting late. Out in the street we jumped in the nearest cab. Em¬ erson Memorial Hospital, and Fast! No way Jack, you ain ' t getting me within five blocks of that place! The driver turned around, it was Tony Mazzone! Oh Fran, I ' m sorry, I didn ' t know it was you. Sure I ' ll take you. It ordinarily takes an hour to get to the hospital - Tony made it in fifteen minutes. When we arrived at the hospital we thanked him and said good-bye to Tony. We were then greeted by the hos¬ pital administrators, Rich Lachapelle and Bob Champagne. Bob said he was sorry that he had to leave, but he was det¬ ermined to find Gansette in Washington. As he was leav¬ ing, he said, They said they never heard of it. They ' re all full of Schlitz! Now the fun part of hospital investigating was to come. Armed with only a pen and clipboard Tina and I followed Rich into the hospital. Well your on your own - Good Luck. Gee, thanks a heap. Oh if you need me I ' ll be in the Hospital Pharmacy taking inventory with Dr. Louis Harrington. I asked the Clerk at the desk, Wendy Allen if I could see the Personnel Sign-In Sheet. Everybody was there, except for two; Dr. Larry Berthiaume and Dr. Chris Gallagher. It says here they were temporarily dismissed, I wonder why? I can answer that! I glanced over my shoulder - it was Sister Mary Daryl Davenport the head nurse. I dismissed them just the other day. We moved on. The elevator rang. Thirteenth floor - The Grog Ward. As we walked along, a mysterious noise was coming from room 49. (Noise). I slowly opened the door of the padded cell. Good Heavens it ' s Dave Morill! All he said was, Hi, I ' m Dave. I closed tjie door and we split. Suddenly at the end of the corridor there was a disturbance. I grabbed the nearest intern, who was Danny Colby, and asked him, Did you see what happened? Class Prophecy Yea, I did. I was standing here rinsing out my bedpan - when - there they come - streaking around the Old Men ' s Ward, making everybody ' s temperature rise. Who was it? , I demanded. It was Debby Coran and Karyn Dubois. Over the intercom came, Dr. Higgins, please report to the Nurses Lockers - Thank You. I thought to myself, No it couldn ' t be! I told Tina I ' d see her later, and I went tearing on down the corridor. Before I could stop, I crashed into a man carrying a huge brief case, and flattened him. I ' m awful sorry. It ' s alright, he said getting up very slow. Im new in these parts-I ' m a salesman. Really what do you sell? I don ' t have time to explain but here ' s my card. The card said, Buy All-Purpose Jyringi. I thought I ' d call on a few patients. Walking aimlessly around, taking a few notes. I found myself in the Intensive Care Ward. Glancing in one of the beds I saw Jimmy Hebert - bandaged from head to toe. Jimmy what happened? It was a mistake. One night Martin Schwartz and Mike Piscopo thought I was their pipe cleaner. The next thing I knew I was in here. Just at that minute an emergency came through the doors. Who is it? , I asked Dr. Carol Germain. Ray Hutchinson he dropped 30 f in his bed pan, and got his head stuck in it trying to get his money out. Hummm, looks serious! I left to go to the sixth floor. No sooner had I arrived, than there was a disturbance. I asked nurse Terry Sawyer where it was. 631 she screamed. I bolted up to the door, and kicked it in. There leaning out the window were Kevin Swift, and Bruce Swett. What are you doing? We, ah, were just, ah, keeping those girls over there company. What girls? Over there. I looked across the back alley. I couldn ' t believe my eyes. There - sitting on the window sills were six girls; Mary Beth DesChenes, Chris Colby, Pam Dempsey, Pam- my Nogren, Kathy Foley, and Sylvia Tashjian. Kathy hollered over, Don ' t listen to a word they say Fran. We were having a Moon Contest, and they said that they were the judges. Oh, God, I can ' t take this! Leaving the room I bumped into Drs. Buddy McShera and Dave Lajoie, and overheard the following conversation; I ' m sorry to hear that. How did you lose her? Well, three days ago we put her in the elevator, to take her down to surgery. Oh, that ' s good, at least you know where she is. No, that ' s bad ' cuz we don ' t have an elevator. Let ' s go to the lounge ! In the hospital lounge, we were being entertained by the luscious belly dancer - Little Egypt Ruth Girouard, and her gorgeous dancing girls; Gail Ring, Anne Mantha, Pauline Russell, and Mark Holmes. This must be pretty good having your own floor show during work, huh? , I asked. Yah, it ' s even better in colder weather, said Surgeon Kevin Adams. Oh really, Why? Then we have to treat their chest colds about twice a week. Tina strolled in looking absolutely bushed. What ' s up I asked? Well, she said. I just talked with the hospital lawyers Stefanski, Swiezkowski, and Witkowski. What did they say? I don ' t know, I couldn ' t understand a word they said? Moving along I stopped and asked Sister Ethel Carol Garabedian for directions to the hospital ' s cafeteria, and 92 Dr. Higgin ' s office. On the way to the cafeteria, I ex¬ plained to Tina about the reports of missing food. The food just disappears! As we entered the cafeteria, I glanced over to the service-counter and noticed that Mary Beth Balukonis, Johannah Daly, and Kirk Manning were working behind it. I just KNEW that I din ' t have to look any further. Come on Tina let ' s split. ! Did someone mention split? said Johannah as her mouth watered. Now on the first floor I said, Hey boy, how about a paper. Yes sir. said paperboy Alvin Oulette. I read the headlines aloud- Four Killers Rob $36.23. They showed pictures of those rough, daring, bold criminals. Their names were- The Warren brothers, Richy and David, David Houle, and Ray Brunette. They held up the Wendy Scho¬ field Memorial Hospital with bank president Bob Tee, and two secretaries Debbie Vallee, and Jane Dandro. It says they used sawed-off squirt guns. The only comment made by the robbers, was by Brunnette who said Hey, Mr. Policeman, can you hear me? The bank guard Scott Corey was passed out, I mean, off duty at the time of the robbery. Back upstairs to the 3rd floor, I passed well known psy¬ chiatrist Mike Canty Hows it going Mike? Huh? Never Mind. Passing the X-Ray room I heard a loud slap. Mike Dawe came running out. I poked my head in the door- there was Phyllis Henderson, He said he was going to X- Ray my foot-1 didn ' t know he was going to take a Group Picture. Tina, (me) stopped and asked Drs. Donna, Donald, Brad, and Debbie or should I say Drs. Bigwood, and Bigwood and Johnson and Johnson, If they knew where Dr. Higgins ' office was. Yes room zzz Miss Nelson, phone call. I ' ll find this Dr. Higgins. I said, I stopped Dentist David Joinville and asked about Dr. Higgins ' practice. It ' s very unusual; he investigates strange things. What is Dr. Hig¬ gins in? He is head advisor of mooniology. Where is he now? Probably in the nurses locker room. Tina came back- Who was it? Tommy Daige, we ' re invited to his evening party, everyone ' s going - Jayme Dud¬ ley, Joe Fontain, Sue Kobel, Karen Williams, Oh, just about everyone, what do you say? Maybe, I ' ll let you know later. There ' s a good wrestling match tonight at the auditorium - Masher Mary Halley and Killer T.J. Torte against Gorilla Monsoon Tommy Friend and Bad Bad Elaine Goodrow. Meanwhile another disturbance on the 6th floor was in progress. This time security guards Peter Sielis, David Martin, Mark Leonard, and Bob McCluskey were called in. It seems that three men broke into the room of Cindy Boston, Carla Osterberg, and Debbie White, then locked themselves in. One by one these dangerous ruthless men were brought out - John Shocik, Normand MacLeod, and the worst of them all Steve Sanborn! I promptly vacated the premises. Now down to the 5th floor where I saw John Brodeur and Doug Witt taking a strecher into one of the rooms. Hey, who do you have in there? Joanie Shepard - she broke her foot while kicking the heck out of some chick. A voice from under the sheet spoke That ' ll teach her to grab my shirt! When I asked where the victum was, nurse Susan O ' Neil told me she was down at Glenn Graves Funeral Parlor. I then decided to take a stroll down to the maturnity ward. To see what was happening I opened the doors and there they were, anxious¬ ly awaiting the news. Ray Buckley had already been told he was the father of 8. Poor Ray ended up as David Morrill ' s roommate. The rest held on. There was Tom Castonguary, Steve Kennedy, and Rich Doldo. Finally Dr. Glenn Harris and Nurse Joanne Bedard held up a sign which said - Gentle¬ man, no hassles. Debbie Henze and Karen Conley brought Steve Kennedy ' s twins to the window. One looked like a football, and the other like a basketball. He said, Oh boy, I Can ' t wait till ' I get the complete set. I left with intentions of finding Tina, and visting the Hospital Chapel. In the chapel I met Rev. John Kilpatrick, who was giving the last rites to poor Tom Johnson. It seems that Tom was playing hide-and-seek in the laundry with Gary Sundquist and accidently locked himself in the washing machine that he was hiding in. An hour later Debbie Blake entered the laundrey and dropped a quarter in Tom ' s ma¬ chine. They say he never knew what hit him. So what else is new? At the chapel Dean Hebert and Eric Day were Crying uncontrollably, you must have been very close to him. CLOSE! That leech owed us both $20 each! I left in search of Tina and aspirin. I asked nurse Deb Pressey where the medicine closet was. After directions, I thanked her, and went immediately to the closet and flung the door open. I couldn ' t believe my eyes - there in front of me was Dr. Bill Simon and Nurse Noreen Cullen. What ' s going in here ! We were just taking each others tempera¬ ture, sir. Which one of you has reached 105? With that I shut the door. It was getting late and I still had to find Tina. I passed the Coffee Room and saw throngs of nurses hard at work. Quickly jotting their names down, let ' s see there were Diane Fortin, Diane Lennerton, Norma Madore, Loma Shannon, Donna Buring, and Janine St. Denis. While I was at it, I thought I ' d make a raid on the basement. Sure enough, there were the cafeteria workers and maintenance men. Once again I whipped out my little black book; Bill Wall, Steve Tolman, Ed Laflin, and Joe Madore all washing the bowls - and I do mean toilette bowls. On the other side of the basement were the cafe workers. Betty St. Denis, Mary O ' Leary, Fran McCaffrey, Deb Rand, and Kathy Reidy, all passed out cold. They all wore little yellow buttons that said, I got grogged at Emerson ' s. In the auditorium, Val Kemp, Albie Davenport, Lisa Bates, and Debbie Barry were having a demolition derby with the wheelchairs. I finally found Tina upstairs in the lobby talking with Martha Southwick Did you hear what happened to Judy Fulginiti? Martha asked. No what? She accidently grabbed a bottle of Drano thinking it was hair coloring. What color is her hair now? Well, her head looks like Pink Floyd ' s Dark side of the moon. Just then I glanced out the window and saw Rich McCue fly by. Nurse Chris Quarrey said Gee, he ' s kind of low today. Low! We were on the 12th floor! I was visiting some friends in the One Hanging Unit. Let ' s see there was Audrey Weymouth, Charlene Byrnes, Kathy Bernatchez, and Debbie Flanagan. Did you hear that Susan Hadley and Kathy Talbot fell out of the 14th floor window? No how did that happen? They were standing next to it when Helen Swan sneezed! That does it! Come on Tina! How do you get out of this nut house? Sandy Cocker, Debbie Martin, Charlene Gallant pointed the way. Once outside Tina glanced up to the 8th floor and screamed, Is it a bird, is it a plane, is it a full moon? Naw, it ' s only Higgin ' s! 93 . ¥ mm Class History Sept. 1970 - Lost and we thought we ' d never be found. A gang of 150 tenderfeet (freshmen to be more explicit) were last seen crossing the threshold of L.H.S. only to find our¬ selves dodging buckets and more buckets. Groping around we finally found our places and thought we ' d be like every¬ one else and elect our class officers; Larry Berthiaume- President; Diane Fortin-Vice-President; Mark Harrington- Treasurer; and Valerie Kemp-Secretary, with Mr. Chasse as our advisor. In sports we were greeted with two outstanding honors as the basketball team advanced in the District Playoffs, ending with a 14-7 record. The baseball team captured the Southern Worcester County League Title for the first time in L.H.S. history. All in all an auspicious beginning. Sept. 1971 - We have returned this time as semi-sophisti¬ cated sophomores. Assigned with our lockers were um¬ brellas and galoshes. With Mrs. Martinez as our trustworthy advisor we elected Larry Berthaiume as president; Fran La- Porte as Vice-President; Chris Gallagher as Treasurer; and Chris Quarrey as Secretary. The football team proved their Wolverine power by going undefeated and untied along with being crowned with the Class C Title. In keeping with L.H.S. tradition, the basketball team sparkled with a 16-5 record, winning the S.W.C.L. Title. The baseball team presented us with our fourth consecutive league title in major sports. On a rainy morning in June, we set out for our sopho¬ more class trip but somehow ended up at Quarrey ' s pool. Since we missed Misquamicut the first time we decided to try again. Modestly, we must admit that we were the best bunch of Sophomores L.H.S. has ever come across in a long time. Sept. 1972 - And now upper classmen, but there are no little freshmen to hassle, due to the double sessions. Never¬ theless our football team came back as strong as the pre¬ vious year and again went undefeated. It seemed like a good year for us all; the boys ' basketball team had a 14-6 record and the girls had an 11-5 record and our cheerlead¬ ers placed 2nd in the David Prouty Tournament. We now had to start thinking more seriously and getting down to business for we had many jobs awaiting us. So we got our class election underway and elected Jim Higgins- President, Fran LaPorte-Vice-President, Audrey Weymouth- Secretary, and Debbie Rand as class Treasurer. With Mr. King as our class advisor, we started thinking in terms of our prom. We decided the setting of the prom was to be Maronis Park on the 25th day of May. Our queen was Audrey Wey¬ mouth and her court consisted of Cindy Boston, Linda Dy- kas, Valerie Kemp, and Janine St. Denis. Soon the prom was just a memory and the all-absorbing topic -- What ever shall we do without the seniors next year? - began to buzz as we saw a critical year in view. Sept. 1973 - To be or not to be--that sure was the ques¬ tion! But here we are, once the freshmen of 1970 and now the seniors of 1974. It just doesn ' t seem possible. In sports our football team put up some good fights with Steve Kennedy and Larry Berthiaume as co-captains. The boys ' basketball team, with co-captains Jim Higgins and Steve Kennedy, played hard and finished with a 7-13 re¬ cord. But, our girls did excellent work with tri-captains Debbie White, Audrey Weymouth, and Joanie Shephard. The proud Wolverettes compiled an outstanding record of 12-2. The hard-practicing cheerleaders, pushed along by co-captains Sue O ' Neil and Chris Gallagher, walked away with 3rd place in the David Prouty Tournament and cap¬ tured 2nd place at Notre Dame of Fitchburg. A Field Hock¬ ey team was introduced this year for the girls and they were involved in a number of close contests for a first year team. This year was going to be rough so with Mr. LaPlante as our advisor we elected our officers as soon as possible, Jim Higgins-President; Fran LaPorte-Vice-President; Aud¬ rey Weymouth-Secretary; and Debbie Rand-Treasurer. Our first activity was the class play which was Ask Any Girl , this required many nights of practice, but all in all it ended quite well. With Mr. Hippert as our new class advisor, we started looking forward to the Senior class trip. And being truly sophisticated, we were ready to conquer anyone or any¬ thing, until we arrived in Washington and found ourselves a little timid and thought we ' d better stick together. Our bus drivers, Austin and Jim had to put up with a bus load of hanging units, but worse than that was the tour guide who didn ' t know her right from her left. We had a good time anyway and were lucky to have chaperones like Mr. Albro, Mr. and Mrs. Hair, Miss Morin, and Mr. Hippert. Time is streaking by, many moons have come and gone, and graduation is drawing near. Our last time to¬ gether as Seniors will be the Dinner Dance which will be held tomorrow on the 4th of June at the White Cliffs lo¬ cated in Northboro. The time for our departure is closing in on us. As we look back on our four years of L.H.S. we realize it was really an experience for us and we ' ll all go our separate ways whatever they may be. But we will always remember our times together and remember those who have helped to make it what it was. 97 Pre Graduation .... Class Orator Salutatorian Valedictorian MR. PRINCE MR. ENGLISH MRS.
