Superintendent EDWARD BOULE-Asst. Principal DONALD RUTTER-Superintendent 2 MRS. PAT BUKOSKI-Clerk MRS. MARILYN HYLAND-Clerk The easiest decision the Class of 1973 had to make over a four-year span was the selection of the Ma¬ roon dedicatory recipient. His entire life has been one of self-sacrifice, al¬ ways thinking of the other person and promoting his welfare. How evident that has been shown since we have known him-those weekly trips to Worcester State Hospital to visit God ' s disadvantaged, allow¬ ing a ray of sunshine to come into the dark lives of these afflicted. It has always been that way. Total disregard for self. But, oh, has the Class of 1973 been benefi¬ ciaries of his helpfulness, concern, and devotion toward us the last three years as class advisor. It’s altogether possible we would have headed down a Dead End street without his aid. Our class advisor has been 100 per cent with us. It has been a total commitment. We ' re proud and boastful. Why shouldn ' t we be? No senior class anywhere can claim it has the equal of The Great¬ est Guy Alive . That ' s you, Mr. C. Carvil Moore. Is that so? DEDICA TION 3 MR. ADAMS MRS. AVEDIAN MR. Tom Lauder The 1972 undefeated football season was tremendously re¬ warding because all nine oppo¬ nents treated us as their most important game... and we beat them all. Because of talent, ex¬ perience, leadership, cohesion, and dedication, football at L.H. S. has evolved into some¬ thing special. Basically, we thought we were going to have another excellent sea¬ son. .. an 8-1 or 7-2 record. To go undefeat¬ ed again was a possi¬ bility, however, it was a remote possibilty. Once we got into the Northbridge game, we knew we were going to go undefeated again. I CLASS DA Y A WORD OF THANKS The Maroon Staff of 1973 wishes to express their thanks to all who helped make this yearbook a suc¬ cess. We would also like to thank all the students and faculty members who participated in the School Play the Wizard of Oz, whose financial re¬ ceipts helped us meet our goal. Class History As graduation draws near, we wish to reflect on our many experiences that we shared during our four-year stay at Leicester High School. Upon entering the high school as freshmen in that fall of ' 69, we caught our first glimpse of high school life--leaky roofs, no more lines, strange growths on the ceilings, a deafening intercom, hamburgers, and more hamburgers ! With Mr. Carney, and later Mr. Chasse, as our advisors, we elected our class officers--Jimmy Brennan, President; Steve Thienel, Vice President; Debbi Sundstrom, Secretary; and Sean Comerford, Treasurer. That year, basketball was king! We had nine players on the J. V. team, which was led to a 14-0 league record by Pete Row den and Jim Brennan. After an all-too-short summer, we began our silly, semi-sophisticated, and sometimes stupid sophomore year. We were no longer puny freshmen! With Mr. Moore as our class advisor, we decided that we would do more than just go to Whalom Park. With Tommy Lauder as President, Billy Earle as the V. P., and Diane Courtemanche as Treasurer, and Debbi Sundstrom, Secretary, we organized a Gala Carwash which was held in four places-- Leicester Center, the Cherry Valley Legion, Tatnuck Square, and Rochdale. That night, tired and wet, everyone came to our dance, completing a day of financial success. Using the money we made, we set out with two busloads of screaming sophomores to merry Misquamicut Beach for a day of fun and sun--but mostly, sun. With free passes to the amusements, we kept the lines full to the minia¬ ture golf, penny arcade, merry-go-round, and especially those dodge ' em cars. I can’t forget to mention our lovely (?) buffet supper at George . In sports, ten sophomores contributed to the 5-3-1 record in football. With Pete Rowden, Jim Brennan, and Billy White as our representatives, the varsity basketball team ended with a 14-7 re¬ cord. The baseball team won the Southern Worcester County League title for the first time ever, while many girls from our class contributed their talents to softball, cheering, and girls ' basketball. Our junior year began in the fall of ' 71 with a flurry of activity. About two weeks after school started, our class rings came in... finally! After a couple of months of spinning and head bopping, the rings were put away, never to be seen again. Under the guiding hand of Mr. Moore for the sec¬ ond year in a row, we elected Bill Earle, President; Diane Courtemanche, Vice President; Donna Wood, Secretary; and Debbi Sundstrom, Treasurer. To get into the Christmas spirit, we sold Christmas candles. On top of that, we had a Christ¬ mas bakesale, where we also sold wreaths, decorations, and leftover candles! In the spring, we held our Second Annual Gala Carwash which wasn ' t quite as gala as the first, but nevertheless, very successful. In an attempt to defray the cost of our prom, we held several dances during the year in addition to the other activities. Then, the highlight of our junior year was, obviously, our prom. Under the theme Precious and Few , it was held on May 13, 1972 at the Holden House Country Club. The entertainment was pro¬ vided by Bill McManus ' Band, and it left us wondering, Was that Janis Joplin behind those Foster Grants? Debbi Sundstrom was chosen as queen, and her court of beauties consisted of Janice Be¬ langer, Sighle Cantara, Gloria D ' Andrea, and Dotty Early. That year, football took a leap up in the L. H. S. realm of sports. Tom Lauder scored a grand total of 116 points, and because he led the area in scoring, he was chosen for the Worcester Tele¬ gram Gazette All-Star Super Team. Aside from all the recognition, this was a joyous time for Leicester because this was the first undefeated and untied team in our school ' s history. The bas¬ ketball team, with its record of 16-4, and the baseball team, with its record of 12-3, enabled Lei¬ cester to capture the SWCL crowns in all three sports. Our last junior activity was the contribution of money to Camp Putnam for a campership. Bonnie Ring, Historian 86 When we came back from our summer vacations, jobs, or both, we arrived at Leicester High only to realize that we were Seniors! Unbelievably enough, we had finally made it! The school year started off to the strains of Pay your dues 1 Sell yearbooks! and Get ads! Although we had worn his patience thin at times, Mr. Moore came up with us to be Senior Class Advisor. With his help, we elected our class officers: Billy Earle, President; Diane Courtemanche, Vice President; Sue Germain, Secretary; and Debbi Sundstrom, Treasurer. Unlike most graduating classes in the past, we started our senior year with money, rather than in the red. Early in September, we held tryouts for the Senior Class Play. On November 24 25, 1972 we presented Get Smart with a cast of 28, under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Matte. In December, we started our payments for the Class Trip. The time flew by and we had already been measured for our caps and gowns. Suddenly, it was April! We left for Washington, D. C. at 7:30 a. m. on April 16 in two Continental Trailways buses. After wearing the bathroom door off its hinges, we arrived at the Ambassador Hotel at 4 in the afternoon. Once we were settled in our rooms, we set out to discover Washington. The next two mornings came early, bringing our bus- drivers. Bill and Dennis, and our ever-smiling umbrella ladies. We toured ' til our feet hurt and spent money ' til we were flat broke. We left for home at 10 a. m. April 19, and the bus ride home was quiet--except for all the snoring!! A special thanks goes to our chaperones: Mrs. Matte, Miss Wakeen, Mrs. Clew, Miss Morin, Mr. Hippert, Mr. Baziliauskas, Mr. LaPlante, and Mr. Moore. Just barely recuperated from the trip, several seniors took part in the All-School Musical, Wizard of Oz . This was presented April 27 28, again under the watchful eye of Mrs. Matte. Senioritis had finally set in and attendance, or the lack of it, caused some concern regarding graduation plans. The football team, captained by Tom Lauder and Tom Russell, gave Leicester a second unde¬ feated - untied season. At this time, we proudly hold the state ' s longest winning streak. Boys ' bas¬ ketball, with Jim Brennan and Pete Rowden at the helm, had a record of 14-6, while the girls’ team, under the leadership of Robin Harrington and Sue Germain had a record of 11-5. The softball team, guided by Debbi Sundstrom and Robin Harrington, is doing well, as is the baseball team under cap¬ tain Steve Thienel. With Sheila O ' Neill as one of the co-captains, the cheerleaders walked, or rath¬ er danced, away from the David Prouty Tournament with 2nd place, which was quite an honor for them. During our four years at L. H. S., we were lucky enough to see many changes take place. Among these changes were the gaining of a new superintendent, a new principal, and, thanks to the Student Advisory Council, a student smoking area. Tonight, we will have our last social function as students at Leicester High--our Senior Dinner Dance. It will be held at the Maridor Restaurant in Framingham. This Wednesday as we graduate, we ' ll leave a few tears and many cheers in these halls. As the 187th grad’ ating class of Leicester High School, we wish to extend our many thanks to the faculty, friends, and parents who have helped us achieve our goal. • ? ► a tit • n ■ ►■ • ? ,Va4| k - Class Prophecy I woke up about 4:00 just as the sun rose over the old refrigerator in the New Jersey Municipal Dump. It was hazy and rather wet that day and I decid¬ ed to move on. I jumped up and rubbed my eyes, stretched, and shook the coal dust off my clothes, picked up my belongings, and was on my way to the nearest train station, to continue my tour of the United States. As I walked through the freight yard, I saw to my pleasure an MOM car with the door open. I threw in my bag, and jumped in after it. As I scanned the inside of my temporary home, I saw someone sleeping on a mattress of an empty M M bag. I went over to him, removed his chocolate stained hat, and looked at his face, and shouted Steven Thienel! He immediately awoke with a startled look on his dumb expression. I said, How are you doing? Who are you? , he said. It ' s me! Don ' t you remember?? Gorgeous, sexy, beautiful. .. Oh yah. He said, rolled over to go back to sleep. Just then I heard a noise outside the car. Did you hear that?? He said ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ . I was stricken with fear. Then I heard, Who is within? I saw a blue hat sticking up over the edge of the floor. I woke Steve up, and we each grabbed a bag of M M ' s. The hat started moving up. We started throwing M M ' s at him, the force of which sent him sprawling flat on his back. We rushed out just as he exclaimed, Those people are right, they don ' t melt. Then we recognized him. Homer! we cried. We invited him into the car, and talked for a while, and he told us how he got a job in the railroad es¬ corting hobos off the premises. He enjoyed his job very much. Then he said that since he knew us we could stay on the train. We thanked him and he went off to have a couple of Joes. As the train rattled down the tracks, Steve and I thought that it might be good to finish our tour together. We talked and sur¬ vived on M M ' s (oh my face!) for a few days till the train grounded to a halt in Pennsylvania. Steve and I jumped quietly out of the train so as not to get caught, and ran across the lot where the trains were unloaded. In a small office building we saw a man at work, and decided to go over and ask him where we could get something to eat. He had fuzzy hair that stuck up all over his head, and when we got closer we found it was David Hallen. He was sitting at a desk littered with papers and dust which made him sneeze, as he stoked on his bowl. The walls were covered with posters and signs, and over his desk was a portrait of Doctor Grabow. David told us how he started working as president of the rail-road till he accidentally blew up a train with one of his inventions called the Inthermo, and they reduced his rank. He told us how he once invented a muzzle for his housekeeper Jean Silva, but it also was a failure. We asked him where a place to eat was and he said there was a nice restaurant in town run by Ron Salsman. It was cafeteria style, and was supposed to be very good and reasonable. That sounded good to us so we said goodbye and walked to town. Along the way we saw a girl with dark hair and a tight red dress leaning against the lamp post and singing Ten cents a dance. As we got closer we found it was Lorelei Smith. When we asked what she was doing she said she was Trying to become a star, and there are auditions for a play coming up. We said that she would be very good in the part and good luck. As we went to jay walk across Main Street, we were stopped by a cop and lo and behold it was Larry Burtchell. I ' m afraid I have to give you filthy hippies a ticket, he said looking at us in disgust. Larry it ' s us, Steve exclaimed. So it is, he said peering closer. What happened? We explained how we were traveling cross country hitching on freight trains and how we bump¬ ed into each other. Don ' t you know that ' s against the law? Larry said. We stayed silent. But since I know you, I ' ll let you go Larry said. We thanked him and went to Ronnie ' s Restaurant. The name of the cafeteria where we would eat. The sign in front promised food that would bring back fond memories of our happy high school days. We scrounged in our pockets for money, got our food and sat at a table. At the next table sat David Robillard the famous track star. He told us how Elaine Boquist had run off to Canada and we wondered if she would be granted amnesty. He also told us that Cindy Courville had flown up from being a mere church Lecturer to become Billy Graham ' s leading competitor. We asked David if there was anything to do in town and he told us there was a silent movie at the drive-in starring Stanley Zachowski and Mary Johnston called the Martha Mitchell story, Lovingly directed by Karen Magnuson. We thought it was a good idea so when we finished our meal, we walked to the drive-in and sat on the ground. Just as Steve was about to take the speaker down, a motorcycle came roaring up and stopped aside of us. It was Charley Millette sitting on a basketball and coming to the drive-in on his motorcycle. At the snackbar we saw Donna Wood slaving away at the popcorn popper singing arias from Madame Butterfly. We asked her for some popcorn and spent the end of our money on it. On our excursion to the outer portion of the premises we happened upon the affluent multi-millionaire David Robidoux, who had come upon his vast income by soliciting Fuller brushes. He was standing in his bright footwear with popcorn butter all over his face. We told him we were going cross country jumping freight trains and he said to watch out for Sean Comerford on the railroad tracks. He had willed his body to science and was determined to mess it up good. We took off for another railroad yard and onto another freight car and headed on again. We got off in New York and headed for the city. When we got there we thought it might be fun to go to the roller derby. We didn ' t have any money to get in, but the ticket seller, Dave Swett let us in for nothing. We walked into the crowded arena and sat on the bleacher. There we found ourselves sitting next to Ed Trepanier who, with the Bible in hand was preaching to the multitude against gambling. He sat with his best friend, Tom Russell, a successful manu¬ facturer of playing cards and Bingo games. On the roller derby arena the skating was about to begin. We heard the voice of Patty Hennessey, the roller derby ' s answer to Howard Cosell. In the lineup we found that the famed Anvil Annie was none other than Ann Emond. Also in the lineup was Crasher Kingdon who could knock a skater straight across the arena with one blow and also Dynamo Diane Courtemanche who always in¬ terrupted a game crying Everybody stop! I lost my contact lens! When the game was over, we went outside and met Artie Fortin coming down the street. Arti had become an impressionist and was especially well known for his impression of Harpo Marx. He told us that John and Paul Lennon had gained a lot of weight and formed a music group called the Brother ' Four. On the way to the railroad we were almost run over by a garbage truck which came bombing around a corner at 90 MPH: The driver was Laurea Nygren, who had fallen asleep at the wheel. In Central Park we bumped into Bonnie Ring who was a Brownie Leader and had taken the kids for a stroll. One of the kids, Jeff Stough was crying because nasty old Elaine Henderson had stolen his beanie. Suddenly we heard a noise behind us and turned around to see Mike Dalton head of the Dalton Gang. Your money or your life??? he said while his moll, Donna Murphy pulled out a gun and puffed on a big black cigar. Also with them was Rudy Man- cini who opened his violin case and took out a violin and began to play Moon River. Their mascot was Bill Griffin who always walked around in a lion suit and was known as the Lip. All of a sudden we heard sirens scream and bells clang and around the corner came a paddy wagon with officers Bill Earle, Dave Stone, Bob Rossignol, Mark Magregor, and Garry Edson. Hanging out the windows and doors, billy clubs in hand. They jumped out and chased the crooks away through the city. Barry Lyons walked around saying What happened?? The next stop was in Louisiana where we found Robin Harrington sleeping on the sidewalk; she apparently had been trying to cross the street and got tired of waiting. We were beginning to feel hungry and found out that Chris Johnson owned a farm down here and headed for it. Apparently our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and the thing we decided to steal was a cow being milked by Sue Germain. Steve ran in, grab¬ bed the cow, put it on his shoulders and we ran off with it through the bushes. The confused cow started mooing. A car came put¬ ting down the street and stopped where we were. A man got out. It was Charlie Lamarch. Is that boy all right? he asked. He said he was a doctor and we found that Steve had only sprained his nose. Charlie suggested we take the cow and sell it to Sharlene MacDonald who owned a Hamburger Stand. After we sold the cow we had enough money to go to the circus, which was owned by Bob Kustigian. Inside the big top we met Mary Ellen Wade the town busy body who told us that Sughle Cantara had moved to Arizona and was conducting donkey rides through the Grand Canyon. On in the ring was Pat Noon dare devil horse woman. Heidi Bates also starred as the only woman hu¬ man cannonball. We waited by the roadside for about 20 minutes and finally a blue car stopped. We hopped in and to our surprise it w as Norma Croft and Jane Stubbert. Norma was driving kind of fast but we trusted her completely. We talked over old times and they dropped us off at the train station. When we arrived at our box car there was a crowd of people standing around it. We asked an old man what was going on when he turned around we recognized him at once as Charlie Forsman. He told us that there was a rumor that the train was transporting narcotics and they were making a check. Steve made his way to the man who was in charge. He asked what was going on and noticed it was Marlon Burlingame the famous narc of N. Y. City. Steve called me over and we talked to Marlon until the search was over. Among the crowd we stopped Connie and Sheila Burtt whom we hadn ' t seen in years. We asked them what they had been doing all these years and they explained that they were test driving snowmobiles for their uncles business. We walked down an old dirt road until we came to a diner. We saw that the chef was Paul Schold and the cashier was Donna Tatro. The waitress came over and to our surprise it was Jane White who told us that her brother Bill was a famous hairstylist in Harlem. Before we left the restaurant we talked to Scholdsy, who told us some of our old classmates were playing softball across the street. When we got to the field we immediately recognized Mike Reidy in center field catching flyballs with his teeth. Also playing were Peter Rowden, who was in left field with a flypaper glove, Gary Vrsi, Tom Patricks and Paul Doray who owned a tavern called Mel ' s Place. Along the side were five chicks jumping up and down every time Mike made a catch and gaffowed evertime Pete dropped one. These energetic broads were Sheila O ' Neill, Deb Peloquin, Dathy Progin, Peggy Riel and Pam Robidoux. We decided to head back for the train. There was a delay on the tracks. It seemd that a man was carrying a two tone bag of potatoes had twisted his ankle walking across the tracks. When they removed the bag we saw Tom Lauder at the bottom of it singing Take a Walk on The Wild Side . The men who were helping Tom were Gary Harmon, and Steve Gleick. On our way back we heard a loud shout. Where are you going? We turned and walked toward the man dressed in a tin suit. He must have been the conductor. When we neared the person he called out, Well, if it ain ' t Whats his name and whats her name. Arlene and Steve, what are you two doing here?? We recognized the tall ap parition also; it was good ole Jim Brennan. We explained that we were free loading in a M M car and he said it was all right. He then told us that Mark Gay was working for the train station shoveling coal in the engine, and April Angell, Karen Benoit, Jean Laincz and Deb Joseph were also on the train in the passenger car. We then went back to our car. It seemed like the longest day of our journey. The train rattled on down the tracks to Califor¬ nia. We heard a loud roar. I opened the door and saw three bikies, and recognized them as being Joe Mandella who looked like a midget on his 650, and Jim Rocheleau was really kicking up dust on his Honda 50 with a balloon tied to the C.C. bar. They buz¬ zed by so fast that we didn ' t have a chance to say Hi! When the train finally grinded to a stop in L. A. we decided to sneak into a night club where we heard Paul Sliwinski singing. Everyone else was leaving for some strange reason. The club owner Claudia Jones was holding her ears. So that ' s why the sign out front read Claudia ' s Place. We too found that it was to our advantage to depart the scene, and we went back to an alley where we saw Pam Provost try on a jacket which she found in the trash can. She told us how she snuck in the night before and we figured that we would try it too. We went in through the dressing room window. There we had to sneak by Cora Richards who was putting make up on Sandy Butkiewicz. We got out to the main room and sat at a table. We immediately noticed the go-go girls who were Susan Marsh, Sue Mclean, Justine Duffy and Karen Duesel. Paul came out on stage with black boots, leather pants, and no shirt singing Ya Ho. . . Ya HO !! ! Then a waitress came over to our table and it was none other than Maureen Dirsa. We informed her that we were vagrants but she said we could have what we wanted anyway, that stuff wasn ' t good enough to give away, however don ' t tell the boss. We partook of a pair of beers. At the next table there sat Gloria D ' Andrea, Joan Grady, Deb Sundstrom, and Mikey Symonowicz. The entertainment for the evening was a tap dancing act by Kit Foley and Robin Bogart. (Sammy Davis eat your heart out! !) When they finished their gig we went back to the train. On the way out we looked for a cab who would give us a free ride. To our amazement we spotted Penny Forsman behind the wheel of a yellow cab. We hopped in and Penny said that she and four other girls had started a women ' s cab service. The other drivers were Janice Belanger, Deb Clockedile, Terry Soucie, and Dot Early, who is never on time. Penny said that business was slow but it was due to pick up. Penny brought us back to the railroad station where we saw Gwen Fitzsimmons waiting for a train. Suddenly we heard a loud cry of FIRE! ! ! Steve ran to see if he could help. John Bergin was the fireman with the hose. . . There were people running around and there was a loud explosion. We saw Jean Laincz and Marie Lajoie. They wanted to know if anyone was hurt, and if so if they could help. Just then, not to be mistaken by another time, two ambulances pulled up and Nancy Vancellette and Deb Poirier jumped out of one and Candy Thompson and Kathy Voellings out of the other. The earth shook under a terrific explosion and I woke up. Wow what a dream! 93 him Lm, mmn limn mini mmr mmn nvn mm mmn mini mil 1 .! ill H mm K9||j|gj9 4 i h • i|f g Vf l 1 uiaL MR. D.
