My Dear Graduates, In discussing the development of man, John Lancaster Spaulding once said that the greatest service we can perform is to give to each human being a right intellectual education so that no child of God may live with a darkened mind. Therefore, the specific function of any school is the making of minds. As such, it is an intellectual agency. For the past four years at Leicester High School, Mr. Skelley and his com¬ petent staff of teachers have concerned themselves with your mental develop¬ ment, fully realizing that the noblest virtue of their profession is to provide you with the type of education that will enlighten your minds so as you may Mr. Edmund F. Tierney, Superintendent face bravely the challenge of the fu- 7 r ture. That they have succeeded in this endeavor is apparent by the keen re¬ sponse of colleges and local business firms to applying members of this year ' s graduating class. It is a source of great comfort to me to know that your growth in knowledge and understand¬ ing has been fostered and promoted at Leicester High School. FAREWELL TO MR. SKELLEY Not that we loved the other faculty members less, but that we loved Mr. Skelley more. Although he was as constant as the northern star in en¬ forcing strict school-regulations, his ways were quite gentle and admirable qualities were so mixed in him that we might proudly say to all our friends, This is our principal! In conclusion, the Class of 1958 addresses these lines to this famed Shakespearean authority: Forever, and forever, farewell, Mr. Skelley! If we do meet again, why, we shall smile; If not, why then, this parting was well made. Hr. Edward L. Skelley, Principal 2

1958 MAROON The relentless hand of time has tolled off the seconds of our high school careers. The four happiest years of our young lives are at an end. Today, June 4, 1958, there is a joyous feeling prompted by the realization that our goal of grad¬ uation has been attained. Conversely, this air of rejoicing is overshadowed by a vast emptiness of heart as graduation, in its inimitable and inevit¬ able way, proceeds to separate us from our class¬ mates. We trust and confidently hope, however, that the many intimate friendships which we have formed over this four year period will not cease but will continue to flourish in the years ahead. To further us along toward this objective, we have dedicated our Senior Year to the formation of a volume that will re-awaken our minds and hearts to the days that we once enjoyed in the glorious past at Leicester High School. You are kindly invited to reminisce with us now as we relive these memorable days in pictures and in words, found here in our yearbook, the 1958 Maroon. BOB YOUNG and PAUL BUTLER Maroon Staff Co-Editors
