O ' Brien 1958 MAROON The relentless hand of time has tolled off the seconds of our high school careers. The four happiest years of our young lives are at an end. Today, June 4, 1958, there is a joyous feeling prompted by the realization that our goal of grad¬ uation has been attained. Conversely, this air of rejoicing is overshadowed by a vast emptiness of heart as graduation, in its inimitable and inevit¬ able way, proceeds to separate us from our class¬ mates. We trust and confidently hope, however, that the many intimate friendships which we have formed over this four year period will not cease but will continue to flourish in the years ahead. To further us along toward this objective, we have dedicated our Senior Year to the formation of a volume that will re-awaken our minds and hearts to the days that we once enjoyed in the glorious past at Leicester High School. You are kindly invited to reminisce with us now as we relive these memorable days in pictures and in words, found here in our yearbook, the 1958 Maroon. BOB YOUNG and PAUL BUTLER Maroon Staff Co-Editors My Dear Graduates, In discussing the development of man, John Lancaster Spaulding once said that the greatest service we can perform is to give to each human being a right intellectual education so that no child of God may live with a darkened mind. Therefore, the specific function of any school is the making of minds. As such, it is an intellectual agency. For the past four years at Leicester High School, Mr. Skelley and his com¬ petent staff of teachers have concerned themselves with your mental develop¬ ment, fully realizing that the noblest virtue of their profession is to provide you with the type of education that will enlighten your minds so as you may Mr. Edmund F. Tierney, Superintendent face bravely the challenge of the fu- 7 r ture. That they have succeeded in this endeavor is apparent by the keen re¬ sponse of colleges and local business firms to applying members of this year ' s graduating class. It is a source of great comfort to me to know that your growth in knowledge and understand¬ ing has been fostered and promoted at Leicester High School. FAREWELL TO MR. SKELLEY Not that we loved the other faculty members less, but that we loved Mr. Skelley more. Although he was as constant as the northern star in en¬ forcing strict school-regulations, his ways were quite gentle and admirable qualities were so mixed in him that we might proudly say to all our friends, This is our principal! In conclusion, the Class of 1958 addresses these lines to this famed Shakespearean authority: Forever, and forever, farewell, Mr. Skelley! If we do meet again, why, we shall smile; If not, why then, this parting was well made. Hr. Edward L. Skelley, Principal 2 Dedication In appreciation for his cheerfulness, his helpfulness, and his devotion to Leicester High School and its students, we, the Class of 1958 dedicate this yearbook to.. MR. JAMES A. TIVNAN 5 V Faculty FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Justine V. dela Sala, Marjorie E. Frye, Mary B. O ' Neil, Edward L. Skelley, Christine P. McPartland, Mary C. Scannell, Frances E. Devlin. A Tribute To The Faculty The test of a true leader is to know the way, go the way, and show the way. As we con¬ clude our high school careers on this memorable evening of June 4, 1958, we are very grate¬ ful to the men and women who comprise our high school faculty. They have nourished and guided our minds in such a capable way as to bring to consummation the hopes and dreams we entertained as starry-eyed freshmen in the autumn of 1954. Then, the signpost with the arrow indicating Graduation - 1958 had a faraway meaning to us. Tonight, the four-year journey along the path of secondary education comes to an end, for the vague destination of yesteryear has been reached. As the captain of a ship thanks God for a pleasant voyage when port is arrived at safely, we would like to thank our teachers at this time for leading us to this happy occasion. Each of them truly deserves the title of true leader. MISS MARJORIE E. FRYE, English MR. EDWARD J. BOULE, History MR. JOHN F. MADDEN, Commercial MR. EDWARD J. SULLIVAN, Chemistry MR. JOHN E. YOUNG Class Day Address Parents, Teachers, and Friends, As president of the Class of 1958 it is a dis¬ tinct pleasure for me to welcome you to our Class Day program. Today, as we review the past four years, many pleasant memories will be revived. To whom do we owe these memories ? Maybe it is our parents who have stood by us during these long but quickly sped years. They who have been joyful with us in our times of joy, helped us in our moments of depression, were proud of us because of our accomplishments, and inspired us on to higher goals. Perhaps it is our teachers who have taught us not only the 3 R ' s but the essential fundamentals of fair play that are so necessary to lead us into the world and to a full life. Or it could be one of our many friends whose thoughtfulness in our well-being showed us the way to life and the fulfillment of our dreams. Yet, underlying all these thoughts, we find a spirit -- the spirit of Leicester High School. A spirit handed down by each graduating class to the freshmen entering in the fall, but yet re¬ tained as they go forth into the world. A spirit which guides us in our athletic contests and in our school projects. May it now help us along with divine guidance as we proceed into the world to prove our worth and to help us live up to the standards set by those who have preceded us. Really Lounging Around Wine, Women, and Song 54 BARBARA FRAZEL Class History We, the Class of 1958, will keep in mind the knowledge which has been imparted to us during the past four years, and we realize that we would have obtained Nothing Without Divine Guidance. When we entered L.H.S. in 1954 we looked forward to the approaching four years. It took us a few days to become acquainted with this new routine but eventually everything smoothed out with the election of our class offi¬ cers who were as follows: Billy Kobel, president; Jean Farrell, vice-presi¬ dent; Carol Latour, secretary, and Bob Young, treasurer. During the year Billy Kobel left us and Jean Farrell replaced him as president. In the fall we came back as Sophomores with Mr. Rowden as our class advisor. We elected the following class officers: Butch Kent, president; Bob Young, vice-president; Jean Farrell, secretary, and Kathy Best, treasurer. The first of our major projects this year was the Sophomore Picnic. Being overjoyed with the thought of getting out of school for a day, we boarded the bus which brought us to Whalom Park. During this year, we welcomed Bob Shea and Jackie Hennessey to our happy fold. On the debit side we had the following dropouts: Joyce Perron, Diane Carlson, John Zajkowski, and Paul Dorr. Advancing further toward our goal of Graduates, we came back as Juniors. Controlling the class, we had Bob Young, president; Butch Kent, vice-president; Donna Frotten, treasurer, and Carol Latour, secretary. With Miss Scannell as our advisor we ordered our class rings. We waited with much enthusiasm until they arrived a few weeks before Christmas. Those who were welcomed into our class were Judy Russell, Sylvia Lizotte, and Bob Lachance. Among those missing were Barbara Stone, Richard Whitmore, and Roger Caisse. Spring finally came and with it our plans for the Junior Prom. The aud¬ itorium was decorated for this gala event under the theme Oriental Holiday. Miss Scannell and Miss McPartland worked harder than any of us in making this a beautiful prom. Summer ended and back to school again under the long-awaited title of Seniors. To guide the class through a successful year we elected Bob Young, president; Judy Russell, vice-president; Peggy Fitch, secretary, and Donna Frotten, treasurer. Mr. Comer was our class advisor. During this year we lost Pat Alexander, Helen Jodrey, and Donna Frotten. Joanie O ' Brien assumed Donna ' s position as treasurer. To compensate for this loss we welcomed Kathy Morrill, Marie Dufresne, and Tom Morin to our merry flock. Our Class Play Stranger In The Night turned out to be a major dramatic masterpiece as the cast executed skillfully the parts assigned to them. We thank Mr. Argento, our coach, for making the play a huge success. Plans were made for the Christmas Ball immediately after the play. The committees were elected and the decorating began. It was a typical holiday setting and was enjoyed by all. Basketball season arrived. Bob Young, Butch Kent, Jack and Buzzy Hennessy were partly responsible for the team ' s success. Jean Farrell and Carol Latour aided with their enthusiasm as captains of the cheerleading squad. After our February vacation, Kathy McGrail was nominated as our D.A. R. Representative and Bob Young as our Good Government Representative. April came and plans were made for our Class Trip. Twenty-two seniors left for Washington with Mr. and Mrs. Skelly as our chaperons. Along with joviality and laughter of the trip there was a discovery of knowledge in seeing the sights of New York and Washington. We can no longer look forward to our high school years but we, the Class of 1958, will endeavor to proceed with the same optimism which has guided us during the past four years at Leicester High School. 55 CAROLYN JOHNSON Class We, the graduating class of 1958, fully realizing our days at Leicester High School to be numbered, have made, and do here and now declare the following to be our Last Will and Testament. Signed in the witness of: Signed: Hubba-Hubba and Benny Sylvia Lizotte and Carolyn Johnson SYLVIA LIZOTTE 57 JUDY RUSSELL Class Prophecy This year, as the Class of 1958 passes through the portals of Leicester High School, each one leaves a memory of the past and a picture of the days to come. Calling flight 54 to Chicago. Stewardess Judy Russell, please report to the flight deck. As I heard my name echoing over the loud-speaker system, I hurriedly gathered my gear and proceeded to the flight deck. I waved good-bye to Beth Eddy, who also was a stewardess, passed Ruth Gelatt at the desk, and finally boarded my plane. As I made things ready for my flight, my thoughts wandered back to the senior days at Leicester High School. Many of my classmates I hadn ' t seen in quite a few years, but some were steady passengers on the airline. Why, just the other day, Neil Fongeallaz boarded the plane for Kentucky. He was chairman of the annual Agricultural Convention held this year in that state. As we talked, he told me Eddie Tile had become the owner of a chain of First National Stores throughout the nation. It was wonderful talking with Neil and to find out what many of the other kids were doing now. Don Carlson owned his own trucking firm. Joe Kelman was president of the National Hot Rod Club, Jim Larson owned a dairy farm in Arkansas, and Herb Williamson had become the sole owner of the House of Doherty. Suddenly my thoughts were broken by the ringing of the stewardess ' bell. I walked to the rear of the plane and found none other than Judy Senosk, Bob Shea, and George Giggi Grady. Judy was busily taking notes from her executive bosses, Bob and George. My, their commercial course in high school certainly paid off! I gave them some coffee and engaged myself in conversation with Judy. She was on a business trip but was to stay with Barbara Robidoux in Detroit. Judy told me of a very humorous incident that happened back in New York before our take-off. It seems somehow that her bags were misplaced and by mistake a young woman and her companion made off with them. No¬ ticing the mishap in time, she ran after the woman to reclaim her luggage. One might guess that it was none other than smiling Bev Johnson! Both astonished, Judy and Bev began an incessant chatter of past, present, and future events. Bev had finally gotten her singing contract in the Broadway musical My Mama Done Told Me. Also in the show were Tom Morin, producer; Butch Kent, scenery, and adorable Jeanie Farrell. I had to interrupt Jud y at this point because we were nearing Detroit, and the plane would land for refueling and an hour stop-over. I decided to make use of my free time in Detroit, and the shopping center sounded like a good place to use up time - and money. As I started across the street, I was almost run down by Kathy Best in her husband ' s new white Fcrd convertible! After some hurried apologies, Kathy said she would give me a lift. She was on her way to pick up Sylvia Lizotte at her house, Joan O ' Brien at the office, and Carol Latour, who had just come back from Germany. The girls were on their way to watch Punky play in his first big league game with the Cincinnati Reds. Driving up to the ball park, we met Paul Stakun, who was maintenance engineer, and Harry Fox who was still mowing lawns. I told Kathy I had to be on my way because I only had a short stay in Detroit. Once again I prepared to make things ready for the trip to Chicago. I welcomed the passengers aboard and was surprised to find that Carolyn Johnson and Barb Frazel were going on a two-week vacation to Chicago. They told me that Carol Anderson had become a concert organist. Pat Dorr owned a gift shop and was trying desperately to get rid of a new stock of water pistols ! ! ! Kathy McGrail had a teaching job in New York and they further related that Marie Dufresne, Sylvia Rondeau, and Phil Kennen were among the married couples. Arriving in Chicago, I was on the way to my hotel when I heard the screaming of fire engines and the shouts of people. A mounted policeman stopped us and shouted some commands. Upon closer scrutiny I found him to be Andy Van Hook! I saw the Chief ' s car up ahead, and I could have sworn it was Ted Antanavica giving the orders. Once at the hotel, things seem to have calmed down. I met Peg, oh that ' s Peg Fitch, she and I share a room, and we went out to supper. We saw Pete Cote and Carol Harbester sitting across from us at the restaurant and asked them to join us in a good old gab session. Carol had a Chicago newspaper in her hand, and I caught the headline to read: Hennessy brothers star in Chicago U ' s final game! Another inter¬ esting article also received first-page attention: Paul L. Butler wins case at Supreme Court. Then Pete went on to tell us of the Viennese Waltz lesson she received at Bob Young ' s studio. Carol informed us how she had met Ernie Wooldridge, Charlie Sargent, and Russ Hokanson at the Air Force base. The girls said that later in the evening they were going to paint the town with Nancy LeBaron, Barb Flagg, Kathy Morrill, and Nancy Cooper. It was rather late as Peg and I lay talking in our room, but the thoughts of other years and the Class of 1958 floated through our minds as we revived the pleasant mem¬ ories of the four unforgettable years that we had spent at Leicester High School. 58 Class June 2 Class Roll Call Nope, i Ain’t Noivous. Epilogue When the great Leonardo da Vinci had finished his painting of the Last Supper, he called a friend into his studio to inspect it. The friend remarked that the work was marvelous and gave special atten¬ tion to a cup which stood out from the table as if it were real. He stated that he could not keep his eyes off it. Then, very upset, da Vinci took a brush and quickly drew it across the sparkling cup, exclaiming, Nothing shall distract attention from the figure of Our Lord. As the immortal da Vinci wished his famous masterpiece to focalize the image of Our Lord, so we too, should direct our lives in such a way as they will be Christ-centered at all times. We should possess the knowledge that all we are and all we have comes from God: ... without Me you can do nothing. (John 15:5) Life holds no failure like the failure to hope in God. Self-reliance may be a virtue that many justly admire, but to be really effective it must be rooted in faith in God. Success is something we must find in our own way by cooperating with and relying on the buoying support of Christ. Let our class motto serve as the marker which will make the route of life clear to all of us: Nil Sine Numine Nothing Without Divine Guidance. 64 BUTLER INSURANCE FIRE INSURANCE AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE AND ALL OTHER FORMS OF INSURANCE 1068 MAIN STREET LEICESTER TEL.
