In the last day as students of L. H. S. approached our thoughts turned back to some of the outstanding and unforgettable events of past years. The first day as lowly Freshmen, our Sophomore class picnic, our junior Prom, and something we'll always recall-our class trip. As class day and graduation passed we could not help but feel a deep regret as we parted with our lasting joys and memo- ries of our high school days. However, as an aid in remembrance to our happy school days and acquaintances we proudly present riend Teacher '! ? an Miss Iustine V. della Sala We the class of 1953 would like to pause at this time to dedicate our yearly annual The Maroon. This is our small way of showing our appreciation for all you've done for us. By your unselfishness and patience in helping us on your own time, you helped us have a wonderful Senior Play, and our first and exclusive spaghetti supper, just to mention two. You've proved to be a good friend, and teacher as well as a stepping stone to our future. THANK YOU Miss della Sala Advisor eader Init.: Message From the uperintendent Mr. Edmund F. Tierney Superintendent Dear Graduates: The world into which you emerge is a world of strife and unrest. Nations beyond the seas are threatening our ideals and our way of life. Those who have gone before you have fought the good iight and look to you to throw yourselves into the battle and augment their efforts. The lessons of Truth, Freedom, and Tolerance which have been imbued in your school career will stand you in good stead. Remember these lessons- practice them-and march ever onward, with heads held high, and shoulders back -true sons and daughters of Leicester High School. Sincerely, EDMUND F. Sparks Mathematics Social Science and Mechanical Drawing Class History It was a happy but somewhat doubtful group of Freshmen who gathered in the halls of Leicester High early in September 1949. Some of us had been here the previ- ous year for the eighth grade, but this was an entirely new experience. As Freshmen we elected, under the able direction of Mrs. Brown, Dale Biehler, President, Kenneth Bohlin, Vice President, Carol Bickford, Sec- retary, Pat Pearsall, Treasurer. That year we spent becoming accustomed to Leicester High and keeping out of the lordly Seniors, way. Much to our regret during the first year we lost Marie Ringgard, Freddy La- Hair, Bob Sandstrom, and Everett Labree. However, we added to our ranks Marilyn Eames, Barbara Wright, Alice Chesmore. NVhen we came back to school in 1950 after a summeris fun we were at least Soph- omores and could ride the freshmen. That year helped by the advice of Mr. Noone we elected as class officers Dale Biehler, Iames O,Donnell, Ellen Kent and Nancy Luoma. That winter We lost Dale Biehler our President who moved to Illinois. Others we lost in our second year were Teresa Kuzmicki, Charlie Harrison, Herbie Maylot, junie Patricks, Alice Chesmore, Barbara Wright, and Bucko Mailea. To make up for this loss Ernestine Girard joined us. At last June rolled around and with it the long awaited Sophomore picnic. We all piled in the bus and were off to Howe Pond for a day of swimming, eating, softball and all- around fun. When we parted for the sum- mer vacation we knew that next year we would at last be upperclassmen. On September 1951 we elected William Lundstrom, President, Kenneth Bohlin, Vice President, Ellen Kent, Treasurer, and Nancy Luoma, Secretary. Pleasant surprise that September was the newcomer Ioan Roberts. The first question turning up was the formidable question of selecting our class rings. After considerable debates and numerous interruptions by Miss Scannell our class advisor, we finally reached a deci- sion. The rings arrived shortly before the holidays. I In january after a short vacation over Christmas we began plans for the big social event of the year-our junior Prom. We elected as committee chairmen: Kenneth Bohlin-General Chairman, William Lund- strom-Chairman Ex oHicio, Lois Stohlberg - Music, Paul Campbell - Photography, Joyce Ring-Refreshments, Connie Page- Publicity, and Ellen Kent-Decorations. Chosen as the theme was An Evening in Paris. The gym was decorated with 4' massive wall murals and the scene of a Paris street cafe. F everish preparations ended just in time for the decorators to go home to dress. Music was by Ethel Water- field and the evening of May 9th, 1952 was pronounced a great success by all. Miss Mary Scannell our advisor was our chaper- one. That year our class lost George Le- merise and Richie Becker. Next fall, 1952, we had at last come into our own,-Seniors. Our first move was to elect as officers, William Lundstrom, Ken- neth Bohlin, Lois Stohlberg and Nancy Luoma. Appointed as a Maroon staff were Ernestine Girard, Kenneth Bohlin, Frances Schliker, Louise Cushing, Carol Bickford, Ellen Kent, Nancy Luoma, William Lund- strom, Rita Mainville, Connie Adamowicz, Connie Page, Gloria Martin, Marilyn Tay- lor, Ruth Hisoire, and Pat Pearsall all under the aggressive direction of Mr. Wallace. With Miss Harmon's advice and with funds for our trip as an incentive we began scouring for Ads to be put in our Senior Play book. Our play, Peck,s Bad Boy,', was a great success both financially and humor- ously. Our cast under the coaching of Miss della Sala and Mr. Sparks included Lester Boyer, Carol Bickford, Ronald Luoma, Alec Van Hook, William Lundstrom, Kenneth l Bohlin, Ellen Kent, Ernestine Girard, Norma Mailea, Frances Schliker, Rita Main- ville, Marilyn Taylor, Ed Lussier and Bev- erly Mason. We were well rewarded for our work when the critics pronounced our play the best in years. After the play we simultaneously began a Christmas Card selling drive and plans for the Christmas Ball. This dance was a great success and we all left for the Holi- days full of visions for coming events. Back from the holidays we again went on an Ad campaign, this time for the Maroon. We also found time to elect Nancy Luoma D. A. R. Representative. Finally we were ready to leave on our trip, the greater majority going along. XVith Mr. and Mrs. Skelley as chaperones the trip was full of fun for all. At last graduation, Senior Dinner Dance and goodbye L. H. S. As we glance back over the years, our memories are a conglomeration of many thoughts, teachers, pupils, games, vacations, and homework. Our Senior year was the shortest and most enjoyable period of all and I am sure weire all sorry to leave. ALEXANDER VAN Hook J' if xe '06 in lb fx tw 1 ,L: X! The theme is sym- bolized in the following poem which was read at the General Assembly. A man should find pleasure in everyday worlc,i Or else he'll lose interest and then he will shirk. And if you lose interest, the principal goes, And bankruptcy follows, as everyone knows. So, if you are placed where the job d0esn't fit, And hate all your work and are longing to quit, Then make up your mind, it is just up to you To dig up a job that you do like to do. For always remember, there's only one way- If you're happy at work, then the work is all play. Miss Koki speaks to the future nurses Miss Femandez of Framingham State Teachers 1 ENDS Tickets please! CLASS PROPHECY As I rounded the bend of the old hill in Leicester, I passed by old Leicester High School, and I began to think about the class mates, that parted that day of june 3, 1953. I stopped by what used to be Mr. Skel- ley's office and much to my surprise who should be standing in front of me, but Shirley Haley, now supervisor of the Kin- dergarten division of the Leicester Public School System. Shirley had just been talking to Ruth Hisoire and Frances Schliker, both of whom were herding a bunch of little five year olds to our old senior homeroom. After seeing this, I had to inquire but quick, just what was going on! just then a din broke forth and a horrible noise that sounded vaguely familiar to me, it came from an adorable little blonde girl who was scream- ing more than loudly for her mother. The auditorium door flew open, and who should come flying in from the front office but Gloria Martin, the first woman selectman, happily married and the mother of this quiet little lady. Gloria informed me that she was off to the bank. I quickly joined her. As we arrived at the bank Gloria bounded into the office of the President. Who was sitting behind the big desk wearing horned rimmed glasses but Emestine Girard. By this time I had to find a chair but quick. The head teller, Nancy Luoma, came saun- tering in, followed by Duane Audette, who wanted to borrow money to buy a delivery truck for Auclette's super-duper market. Eddie Lussier hurrying to the ofiice late as usual had just smashed into the old truck with his Cadillac. Then I learned that the old knitting mill in Rochdale had been ex- panded and had become the home for the manufacture of jet airplanes. Saul Shanit and Richard Ferguson were Inc. with Ed. Lo and behold I was then informed that Bob Cthe beautifull Gallagher was test pilot up at the airport, now operated by Ioan Roberts, in cahoots with her, were Connie Page and Margot MacLaughlin, who help her run the place. jim O'Donnell was head mechanic at the port, which might account for Gallagher's nose being a little Hatter than I had remembered it to be. After the smoke cleared and settled down to a small inferno, I asked Madam Presi- dent what had happened to L.H.S. I was told to get in the car and find out. As we reached Pleasant Street just past Hillcrest, what to my wondering eyes should appear, not miniature but the real McCoy, a beau- tiful modern structure. We drove up the three mile drive, with me still wondering what was gonna happen next! Entering the main oflice building we met English teach- er, Connie Adamowicz, coming out of the Superintendent's olhce. VVho was behind this desk but Supt. Alex VanHook talking with Principal Kenny Bohlin. They were discussing the whereabouts of Lester Boyer who was supposed to be teaching Chemistry. Lester seemed to have been detoured to the Business section, where Madeline Shepard was in charge. just about this time I decided I needed a cup of cof- fee and a new hat. I was informed where I could get both. We dashed to the adjoin- ing building in which was housed an ultra- modem Cafeteria run by Barbara Anson. Before I had time to think about it, I was on the road to Rochdale. Beyond Dawn Acres, I found the desired hat, glaring at me from the window of Ellen's fashion Salon. Head designer, Carol Bickford, came bustling in from the fitting room, with a mouth full of pins, to talk with the print- er, Irving Parkhurst, who had just arrived with the invitations to a fashion show. Ellen informed me that the joyce Ring modeling agency was handling the show, and Marilyn Eames, and Arlene Aube were fashion models. Finally after much commotion we headed toward the Valley. First we stopped at George Pike's gas station. At this point I was slightly famished and there was a unanimous suggestion that we all stop at the old Cyress Inn there I found the one and only proprietor to be none other than Bill Lundstrom who invited us to be seated, as Lois Stohlberg was about to give a con- cert! We ordered lobster, and after much clamor from the kitchen, our lobster ap- peared led by the head waiter, Ronald Luoma, followed by the Chef, Charlie McKeon. The meal was delicious. We then took our leave and began our journey back to the centre. We were stopped by Police Chief Chester Woodcock, but we soon talked our way out of that dilemma. By now I was exhausted from so much. social activity, and it was getting late I decided to start home, but not before I leamed of the where-abouts of the rest of the kids. Louise Cushing was married and had settled in town. Pat Criffen was head of the Leicester Auto School, doing a thriv- ing business, with Norma Maileas' able assistance. Marilyn Taylor and Rita Main- ville had built a hotel where Leicester junior College stood previously, and were doing a large tourist business. john Franson was the Lincoln Mercury Dealer here in Town competing with the Ford Dealer, Richard Sandstrom, a friendly rivalry though. They were financing their sales through the Maurice Finance Co. beaded by Maurice Martin. Thus all forty two were accounted for. It was great to see the old gang, but now back to work, tune into my television series, Pat Putters in the Pantry. PATRICIA PEARSALL SENIOR DINNER DANCE The Senior Class finished their memorable four years with a Dinner Dance at Hillcrest Country Club on May 30.
