THE MAROON ATHLETICS When the class of l943 made its debut on Washburn Square a number of Maroon athletes had just finished their careers The baseball team mourned the loss of Tom Monahan and loe Lernerise to the armed servlces football had seen the last of Art Lamotte and Morgan Childs the basketball team had lost the SQTVICSS of Art Williamson and Tommy Lemerise while on the track Coach Semino was pondering on how he could replace to such super stars as Iimmy Doyle and Ierry Lemerise Then came the class of 43 with its host of athletes who were to do much to help fill the places of the departed heroes and who later were to find that the war made grave changes 1n the sports of L H S Transportation was curtailed such hopefuls as Art Larievy Charlie Lucke and Harry Newell entered the service of our coun try and we were to lose Coaches Tierney and Semino These changes are a few reasons that expla1n why Leicester was obliged to drop all 1nterscholast1c sports As we glance back over the last four years we recall many glorious victories for our teams especially the Holden game of 39 With the score l8 l2 in Holden s favor the accu rate toe of LeRoy Whitney and the unfaltering courage of Dixie McKeon gave Leicester a one point lead that was to stand until the final gun The class of '43 was the first freshman class to witness a victory over Holden Basketball an infant in 39 was newly organized under the guldance of Coach Semino and Captain LeRoy Whitney Although the basketball team left no blaze of glory in its wake it was evident that under the guidance of Mr Semino and through the stellar per formances of such coming stars as Klosek Childs Williamson King and Larievy Leicester was to have many victorious nights on the basketball court in the future Later in the same year our baseball team coached by Mr Tierney galned victories over plus the nervousness of Mr Hopkins during a playoff game with Spencer gave Leicester the Western Worcester County League title The only outstanding feature of the track sea son was Ilmmy Doyle s running which won him the county championship in the one hun dred yard dash In our sophomore year we remember best the vrctory over Grafton This W1n plus a tie with W1nchendon were the only two bright spots of the l94O football season Among the more prominent members of thls team were Captain Iohnny McKeon Co captains elect Mor gan Childs and llgger Giguere Art Larievy Ray Dorr Paul Bomba Harry Newell and lim Doyle The basketball team under Coach Semino waged a fair campaign and the baseball team won over half the games The Junior year found Leicester enioyrng a most successful year in sports The football team headed by Co captains Giguere and Childs contributed to the success of the season With only two defeats Holden and Westboro our team landed in fourth place in the listing of Western Worcester County teams The success of the season was dimmed however by the death of Bob McDonald who had played a starring game as end all year A plaque to h1s memory was erected by his teammates as a tribute to his sportsmanship and popularity The basketball team under the capable tutelage of Coach Ed Skelly emoyed an excel lent season and lost only four of the Western Worcester County League games Captain Morgan Childs Art Williamson Captain elect Ed King Ray Dorr and Dave Askling played brilliantly for the Maroon team which took second honors in the league finals The baseball team of 42 played but three games before the lack of transportatlon com pelled the Athletlc Director to cancel all interscholastic sports for the remainder of the year When the class of 43 returned to make 1lS final appearance on the hill we were all sorry to learn that interscholastic athletics had been postponed for the duration Although disap polntment prevailed among the L H S seniors We had the satlsfaction of knowlng that the athletic representatives of our class during our four years had made the name of Leicester synonymous on the diamond with victory on the gridiron with everlasting grit and courage and on the track with brilliance of performance In defeat or victory our teams have al ways shown the fighting spirit and true sportsmanship that has given Leicester an unblem ished athletic reputation IQ!
