Lehman Principal Receives Frank Hemelright Award Identity Oi Winner Is Revealed Rt Dinner Meeting Attended By One Hundred Persons Howard L. Hendricks, supervising principal of Lehman Township Schools and teacher of the Men's Bible Class at Lehman Methodist Church, received the first annual Frank Hemelright Memorial Award for -community service in the Back Mountain area at a joint dinner meeting of' Dallas Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs at Irem Temple Country C1911 on Wednesday mght' . ':We' were 'seeking 'the uiniiri inwtlie ,More than 100 persons representing Women of Rotary, Women of Kifa jwanis, Harvey's Lake Women's Service' community who best exemplified the unsellish Christian qualities in the life of Frank L. Hernelright. These at- womens. Clubs gathered to hear Rev wtributes were initiative, unselnshness, Frederick Reinfurt, pastor of Dallasicollrrage mid miegmy' . The selection was made without Methodist Church, announce the name of the man who has done the most for the community during the past year. Although the committee had made its decision some weeks ago, Mr. Hendf ricks's namehad not been revealed until Wednesday night. Rev. Reinfurt, chairman of the com- mittee of which Rev. Frank K. Abbott. V of Lehman and Rev, I. I. O'Leary of Shavertown were cofdiairmen, was in- troduced by Frederick Anderson, presif dent of Kiwanis Club. In making the award, Rev. Rein' furt quoted the late Will Rogers who when asked What is wrong with the country? replied, I. don't know. I guess it's people. K - Then Rev. Reinfurt went on to stress the importance of character in community life. We need not only good laws, but good lawyers: not only good churches, but 'good ministersg not only good laboratories and hos' pitals, but good scientists and nurses: not only good schools, but good teachers. The good in a community rests on the shoulders of each of us as individuals. - He then explained how the award' was made at a meeting of twenty representatives of church, civic and N ffraternal' groups. We started out by outlining those characteristics which' should not have any bearing on our selection. We were definitely not look' ing for the most popular man, the best looking, the most able politician, the man who slapped the most backs or who knew the most people by their' first names., 1 concern economic status. I am happy to say that throughout the balloting whidi was secret from the start, Mr, Hend- riclrs's. name was never lower than a tie which helps to demonstrate the democratic processes of this award and represents the ,concensus of opinion of the committee. Rev. Reinfurt then resented Mr. for sex, race, color, creed or Tliiendricks i with at S56 v5a:'s..ai, the gift of the anonymous founder of the award, and the Memorial Award plaque for 1947. - In a modest response Mr. Hendricks who was present with Mrs. Hendricks, said that he recognized the award not so much as coming to him as an inf dividual but as coming to the schools forithe contribution they have made to community life. ' ' This award comes to me for doing a job I consider it a privilege to do and can do only with the generous support and-cofoperation of the com' munity. l Mr. Hendricks said that' it was of particular significance that a school man was selected and he hoped that it was evidence sf an increasing aware- ness of the important contribution made by the schools in our democratic and community- life. , - He hoped that it meant the opening of a new era in Back Mountain schools. v We need to reevaluate the pro- gram and the purpose of the schools in the light of the changed conditions of today. We should check'the ad- stniff We should see., that we have adequate teachers, for the teacher is the important item in the matter of education. ' head of ,a school-a most solemn and sacred responsibility because in a school we are dealing with a human ,resource-the most important of all' our resources. - i The school is in the key position! in the community. Church, home and civic responsibilities all have their roots in the school. If the life of our com' munity is to improve it will depend' on how well the schools .are doing thgiriob. l Our increasing rates of divorce, crime and many other ailments are the results of ignorance. If. we are to improve the world and the Back Mountain' Region we must have un' derstanding. The school by- its very nature can dispel this ignorance and promote understandingamong men. The defeat of ignorance is an inf 5 others. If any individual is to enjoy life to its fullest extent he must do things for other people. Personnally, the greatest pleasure that has ever come to me has come as the result of helping I hope the fine spirit of this award can be carried over into a closet co operation in all Back Mountain activ- ity: in education and in all 'the civic' .problems of our area.
