Lehman Principal Receives Frank Hemelright Award Identity Oi Winner Is Revealed Rt Dinner Meeting Attended By One Hundred Persons Howard L. Hendricks, supervising principal of Lehman Township Schools and teacher of the Men's Bible Class at Lehman Methodist Church, received the first annual Frank Hemelright Memorial Award for -community service in the Back Mountain area at a joint dinner meeting of' Dallas Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs at Irem Temple Country C1911 on Wednesday mght' . ':We' were 'seeking 'the uiniiri inwtlie ,More than 100 persons representing Women of Rotary, Women of Kifa jwanis, Harvey's Lake Women's Service' community who best exemplified the unsellish Christian qualities in the life of Frank L. Hernelright. These at- womens. Clubs gathered to hear Rev wtributes were initiative, unselnshness, Frederick Reinfurt, pastor of Dallasicollrrage mid miegmy' . The selection was made without Methodist Church, announce the name of the man who has done the most for the community during the past year. Although the committee had made its decision some weeks ago, Mr. Hendf ricks's namehad not been revealed until Wednesday night. Rev. Reinfurt, chairman of the com- mittee of which Rev. Frank K. Abbott. V of Lehman and Rev, I. I. O'Leary of Shavertown were cofdiairmen, was in- troduced by Frederick Anderson, presif dent of Kiwanis Club. In making the award, Rev. Rein' furt quoted the late Will Rogers who when asked What is wrong with the country? replied, I. don't know. I guess it's people. K - Then Rev. Reinfurt went on to stress the importance of character in community life. We need not only good laws, but good lawyers: not only good churches, but 'good ministersg not only good laboratories and hos' pitals, but good scientists and nurses: not only good schools, but good teachers. The good in a community rests on the shoulders of each of us as individuals. - He then explained how the award' was made at a meeting of twenty representatives of church, civic and N ffraternal' groups. We started out by outlining those characteristics which' should not have any bearing on our selection. We were definitely not look' ing for the most popular man, the best looking, the most able politician, the man who slapped the most backs or who knew the most people by their' first names., 1 concern economic status. I am happy to say that throughout the balloting whidi was secret from the start, Mr, Hend- riclrs's. name was never lower than a tie which helps to demonstrate the democratic processes of this award and represents the ,concensus of opinion of the committee. Rev. Reinfurt then resented Mr. for sex, race, color, creed or Tliiendricks i with at S56 v5a:'s..ai, the gift of the anonymous founder of the award, and the Memorial Award plaque for 1947. - In a modest response Mr. Hendricks who was present with Mrs. Hendricks, said that he recognized the award not so much as coming to him as an inf dividual but as coming to the schools forithe contribution they have made to community life. ' ' This award comes to me for doing a job I consider it a privilege to do and can do only with the generous support and-cofoperation of the com' munity. l Mr. Hendricks said that' it was of particular significance that a school man was selected and he hoped that it was evidence sf an increasing aware- ness of the important contribution made by the schools in our democratic and community- life. , - He hoped that it meant the opening of a new era in Back Mountain schools. v We need to reevaluate the pro- gram and the purpose of the schools in the light of the changed conditions of today. We should check'the ad- stniff We should see., that we have adequate teachers, for the teacher is the important item in the matter of education. ' head of ,a school-a most solemn and sacred responsibility because in a school we are dealing with a human ,resource-the most important of all' our resources. - i The school is in the key position! in the community. Church, home and civic responsibilities all have their roots in the school. If the life of our com' munity is to improve it will depend' on how well the schools .are doing thgiriob. l Our increasing rates of divorce, crime and many other ailments are the results of ignorance. If. we are to improve the world and the Back Mountain' Region we must have un' derstanding. The school by- its very nature can dispel this ignorance and promote understandingamong men. The defeat of ignorance is an inf 5 others. If any individual is to enjoy life to its fullest extent he must do things for other people. Personnally, the greatest pleasure that has ever come to me has come as the result of helping I hope the fine spirit of this award can be carried over into a closet co operation in all Back Mountain activ- ity: in education and in all 'the civic' .problems of our area. I know I shall cherish the op- portunity to work with 'others who shall in later years receive thislbigh honor , ' , I consider it ha challenge to any- 'fman who accepts the Hemelright, award to live up to it in thought and! actiong to help meet the needs of this. reatfcommunity and its greatest ref, urce-the boys and girls. Our home room teacher was Miss Yaple hire. Allegarl. le had a large enrollment of about 60. This was because Jackson Twp. had decided to send their Jr.-Sr. High School students to us.le had many wonderful times which we have never forgotten. Upon entering eighth grade we were split into two sections. lr. Grossman,a new teacher that year, and Hrs. Hendricks were our sponsors. 8-1 had a contest between the boys and the girls to see which could bring in the most waste paper. lhen the boys won the girls gave them a party. 8-2 was busy that year too. They won the Curtis Drive Contest, and earned themselves an ice-cream party. At the beginning of ninth grade we welcomed the students from Ross Twp.0ur home room teachers were Irs. Lewis and Mr. Sidler. The entire Freshman class sponsored the Jr. High School Party on December 1, 1944. lr. Grossman took the whole class on a trip to Wilkes-Barre to visit the Times Leader, the Court House and the County Prison. At the end of our Freshman year we picked the courses we wanted to take for the remaining years. Upon entering Sr.High School Charles Nusa and Romer Middleton were elected Co-president, one from each section. le held a Sweetheart Dance on February 13 of that year. le were very proud when it was a great success. Some one sald it was the nicest dance ever held that year. Juniors at last. le were 46 strong with lr. Ellsworth and llr. E. Hendricks as our sponsors. Officers for the year were President-Charles Nusa, Vice- President-Alden lagner, Secretary-Betty Ide, Treasurer-Andrew Fedor. Determined to fill our class treasury, we sold Scottie T shirts to the student body. A le made our first attempt at theatrical production when we presented our Junior Play 'No Bride for the Groom', a comedy which kept the audience in gales of laughter. le co-sponsored the Spring Prom with the Seniors which brought the term to a successful close. It seemed strange to enter our Al a later as Seniors, with no other class above us. Our sponsors were lies O'Donnell and lr. Martin. le elected our Class Officers soon after the term began. They were: President-lalter Elston, Vice-President-Homer Hiddleton, Secretary-Dolores Adaashick, Treasurer-Bill Cinter, H1storianwJerry Scott, and Assistant Secretary-Betty Ide. Our Senior year has been full of activities. There were the usual activities which we supplemented by selling Christmas Cards, and candy. Before the Christmas holidays we gave our Senior Play, a mystery this time, entitled 'lho Killed Aunt Caro1ine'. Each character was not the type to commit murder. This kept the audience in suspensegthroughout th entire play. Ln all Back llountain amatgur'-Show has been planned which will be sponsored by our class. I E le are looking forward to our class trip, lay Day and Prom. lhen they are over, preparation for graduation will keep us very busy. le have enjoyed participation in school activities. They will always give us pleasant memories. Looking over those ten years, older mem bers of the band recall playing under the baton of Edwin Franke Goldman, the annual Armistice Day parades in Wilkes-Barre,and trips to the Bloomshurg Fair. ' Our organization was started last year. Since then it has been active in serving banquets and in general, contributed much to the school organisation. This year we served the Dairymen's League Ban- quet, Firemen's Banquet, F. F. AJBanquet, conducted an assembly pro- gram, and had two weiner roasts. As an educational venture we were guests of the Boston Store and after making a tour of the store, we were served a luncheon at the Sterling Hotel. le also went to Harrisburg to attend the Pennsylvania Farm Show. We have many plans for the future which will make this an outstanding organization.
