Who is Carmichael? asks a wee, small freshman voice. Well, my child, Carmichael is the spirit of Lehmanites past, present, and future. He is the symbol of Eskie loyalty which is ever present throughout the school day. This furry symbol is present among the teachers as they gather in the morning. As the seniors leave Lehman—the building, Carmichael—the spirit, goes with them. In the halls or classrooms, he accompanies all students. At any dance or social affair, one can see Carmichael having fun with the rest. At an athletic event, the enthusiasm shown by Hilltoppers is another indication that he is there. Come with us now, the Polaris staff of 1960, and see this loyalty as it appears in the school life at Lehman. 2 contents faculty 4 seniors 14 underclass 38 activities 52 sports 82 index 98 ads 101 f a c u 1 t y Only through the co-operation of the faculty are the pictures in this section possible. SENIOR REVERIES Confusion and crowded stairways are memories of our first year of high school. Although few of us were taken in by elevator tickets, many of us were ir- retrievably lost when it came to finding where our classrooms were. We green Frosh” were soon noted for several things: the largest number on the honor roll, excellence in speech work, and athletic prowess. The Junior Booster Club was initiated with a tre- mendous sale of booster tickets. Thus began the memoirs of our class. In the next chapter of our high school lives, we noticed a marked emptiness in the auditorium seats and not-so-crowded hallways. Red and Gray Day, car wash fun, Mr. Quaker, April Love, a winning soccer team, and Smilin' Through” are just a few of the events that made our second year exciting to us. Upperclassmen at last! Will we ever forget the aromas from the chemistry lab? or the poster parties? semester exams? or the innovation of boy and girl cheerleaders? We found out how enchanting Prom week-end really was! One of the highlights of the year was our victorious basketball team and our win over McKinley. What chaos! The snake dance and gala assembly were terrific! This seemed to have been a year of “firsts —the beginning of the K.L.B. project, Science Fair, National Honor recognition assembly, accelerated classes, and book club. Seven of us were tapped for membership in National Honor. Oh yes, we remember it well! The last chapter is now completed. It seems almost impossible that time could fly so fast. But here it is! Those hectic days of filling out college applications, and taking college boards! Looking back, we had an outstanding year, accentuated by the most successful Christmas project. Climaxing the football season was our triumphant defeat of Timken while our basket- ball team overpowered McKinley for the second straight year. The color and pageantry of feudal day provided the setting for the tapping of the 1960 Foot ball Queen, Peg Hulit. Marylyn Krider was selectee as our senior attendant, and these two misses dm reigned at the annual Pigskin Prom. Such othe memorable events as the Junior-Senior party, “Cupid Capers,” and our final Hing— the Prom—will always tt main nostalgic to us. As we receive our diplomas at realize that these high school days are ended, we lod toward to the future and hope that we may have Id an imprint of value on Lehman’s history. Reverii are made of these! STEPHEN I). ADAMS 333 Thirty-third Street N. W. Classical MARK ALPER 310 Thirty-first Street N. W. Classical BARBARA AUDY 1227 Eleventh Street N. W. JUNIORS CLASS OFFICERS—Ellen Reid, secretary; Pete Klein, vice-president; Paula Rochus, treasurer; Tom Bahl, president. The delight of attending the prom! The thrill of solving a chemical equation! The fun of singing, “Has anybody seen the ball?” The all-in-all excitement of being an upper-dassman. All these moments comprised the busy life of a typical junior class (like ours). Through our various activities we grew in spirit, friendship, and maturity. Our vivacity expanded, also, until it finally exploded in the form of an original song. A poster party, the usual good time, some unusually clever classmates, and the words to the famous rendition of Five-foot Two” were born. Something very dear to our hearts is Carmichael— in the form of a fleecy white mascot that walks and talks. We’re very glad to have seen the creation of this brand new tradition. This year, that always seemed to us a dream, bl somed into reality: we became a part of a very beau tiful memory—the Junior-Senior Prom. We floatec through an unforgettable evening of dreamy mus and pretty flowers. Everything glowed with a “sunt merish” air. We waltzed through the entire proE weekend with fun and frolic. In all, we juniors loved every minute of our fin year as upperclassmen. As we review our year togethf —the songs, the spirit, the Prom, our class pep asset bly—all these moments comprised the busy life of on junior year. We strengthened the bonds of friendshi and developed a certain closeness that will enable u to meet the problems and opportunities of our 1 year at Lehman with courage, foresight, and maturir Pat Adelman A yd in Alasya Dorcas Allison l oin Bah I Dave Bailey Bruce Bair Edward Berger James Berger Carl Blanke John Boerner Julie Both Robert Bowman Judith Brereton Larry Brinkley Thomas Brownfield Martha Bryant («ary Buckrklge Ray Byers Marcia Cantwell Shirley Castell erg Larry Catalano Donald Clouston Bob Conley Patricia Cottrill Linda Coyle Dick Crupe Molly Daugherty Elaine DeGregorio Micheal Demion George DeVcny Stephen Duerr Mary Jo Elder Martha Eshelman Sharon Feiman Ted Linesman Carolyn Finnefrock Darla Fitz Betty Fraunfelter Ingrid Freimanis Judy French Clarke Gilbert Jim Gordon Avner Gotlieb Pam Goudy Steve Graham Lorn Harris l ean Haurit I-eslic Heinrich Harry Hensel Gery Hill Jon Hinton Larry H issuer Pat Hissong David Holl Mary Hoover Ed Jackson l arry Johnson Jan Jones Tim Jones Marsha Kaplan Linda Kast 41 Pal Kinnanl Dave Kino Jeff Klein Peie Klein denka Kramanak Donna Kriger Byron Lautensch leger Lee Lavery Pat I ehman Harry Ix ml erk Gene Lillie Sue Loom an Diane MacGregor Carol Marion Judy Mason Susie McGill Kran McKeown Gordon Meldrum Jean Met ger Roger Milbrodt Harvey Mitchell Juniors support their candidates for class offices by attend- Leo Casco offers us a break from our studies by performing ing a poster party. at an assembly. We have a volume of memories too. Its pages will come alive with the very spirit of Sophomore Society. What fun we'll have reliving those past experiences! If we blow away the dust . . . there. The cover cracks a little as we open it. Now, let's read about us . . . “Like welcome. We got the beat, man, a real cool beat on the drums. We got the stage, man, a dark square stage. Chicks with mad hair. Crazy!” Thus begins Chapter I of the class book. That sophomore pep assembly for the Lehman-Timken bas- ketball game was really unique. We're also proud of the vim, vigor, and vitality of our five sophomore lasses who are the first reserve cheerleaders in Lehman’s history. Our class of poets excelled in many other facets of 44 school life. For example, the Freshman-Sophomor Party. Looking on page 2, we find the committees ait their plans that made this dance a terrific success. Ye we remember it well. Turn a page. Ah, what fun we had at those posit parties! We turn another page. Here we are at das elections ... a Gray campaign badge, a Scarlet beam How clearly we recall those moments. We find ourselves thinking about next year whe we will no longer be “underclassmen.” We are thini ing about two chapters yet to be filled during it coming years. Slowly we close the book of memories. We were proud of the 1959 Christmas project. We were scared of our final exams. We were thrilled to see our names in the Journal for the first time. And, most of all, we liked being part of Lehman. Everything, from new desks tops to new faces seemed to breathe a freshness and vitality to us. What an exciting moment it was for every Eskie, when our school kicked off to a fresh start, and played a win- ning season of football—the first in four years! (Wouldn't you say that our class of '63 surely rates as a good-luck charm?) Remember when the frosh team of Lehman defeated Glenwood's? Remember when we finally learned to yell a little louder for the Freshman Battle Cry? We were simply bursting wit; spirit, more spirit, and sportsmanship. What really proved to be a very successful projer of ours, was the elections. Original,'' “clever,” am “varied, can aptly describe the campaign poster while the whole assembly emanated polish and e thusiasm. Yes, we freshmen are happy to belong to this Hi top family as its newest addition. Paced by our two co-captains Dick Bowman and Bill Deames anti guided by head football coach Chet Fair, the Polar Bears finished their first winning season in several years with a 5-4 record. This year the T formation was abandoned in favor of a more powerful winged T. The offense was sparked by the fine quarter- backing of Dick Benedict and the hard running of Tom Bahl. Dick Bowman and Bob Simpson were the main stand- outs in the line both on offense and defense. The climax of the season was defeating Timken 26-0. Post season honors went to six Eskie gridders. Dick Bowman was named to the first team of the WHBC All-County team and to the second team of the Re- pository’s All-City team. Bob Simpson was picked on the All-City first team while Bill Deames and Tom Bahl won second team honors. In addition, Dick Benedict and Jim Gordon received honorable mention on the All-City squad. Dan 88 I he closeness of the game is revealed by interest of the plavers on the bench. Because of the decrease in the number of 1 , out to play football, a change in our football organization was necessitated. Instead of having a Junior Varsity such as we had last year, a team composed of the boys who were not on the Varsity was formed. Although they played no games, they were very helpful in preparing the Varsity for their games by running their oppo. nents’ plays in scrimmage. Without these bo v we would not have had a winning season; we owe them our thanks. Another innovation by some of the players helped to boost the morale and create enthusi- asm among the whole team. With |ern (“Beetle' ) Bailey at the helm, the “Chinese Bandits created quite a stir. Their presence and chant added much to our pep assemblies, |x ter parties, and our entire school spirit. They all deserve much credit for their efforts in helping the team and the school. Behind the Team OUR COACHING STAFF—Mr. Lothamcr, Mr. Eddins, Mr. Darland. Mr. Fair, and Mr. Lyman. FOOTBALL MANAGERS-John Kinsey. Doug Tildcn. and Randy Hilschcr. The varsity cheerleaders headed by Phil Danne- miller have done a great job, as always, in promoting school spirit. The Victory Cheer, which was a new addition, is the favorite competitive cheer among the students. Two new groups of cheerleaders have been introduced. They are the Reserves and Freshmen. The Reserve cheerleaders, which were chosen from the Sophomore class, are Linda Berger, Anne Burkhardt, Bonnie Fisher, Sarah Costello, and Bonnie McGill. The Freshman cheerleaders are Sandy Vaprin, Judy Willis, Emily Albu, Susie McKinley, and Marilyn Manne. Without the aid of the basketball and football managers, the teams would be incomplete. Not only do they assist the coaches but they also promote spirit in the players. The backbone of any team is the coaches. We, as Eskies, can be proud in saying that our coaches are the finest around. 89 The Varsih M a Pandemonium breaks loose after the Mc- Kinley game. For the third straight year our varsity basketball team has finished the regular season with a 12-6 record. Dick Bowman, Dick Benedict, and George DeVeny carried the brunt of the scoring throughout the season. There were many highlights of this year's season. For the second time in a row we beat McKinley’s highly touted ‘'Bulldogs and this time by a very lopsided score. In addition, our only defeat among the city school was at the hands of Timken, thereby making us runners-up for the city championship. In the post-season selection of outstanding players, Dick Bowman was again named to the Repository “All City second team. Dick Benedict and George DeVeny received honorable mention. CANTON, OHIO 112 In the past 12 months MORE MOTORISTS SWITCHED TO AMOCO-GAS than to any other premium gasoline! Think of it! Thousands-upon-thousands of motorists changing their usual gasoline buying habits and switching to Amoco-Gas! Why this remarkable switch? Unlike all other premium gasolines in America, only Amoco is all gas—untainted by lead... untinted by color. That’s why, unlike all other pre- mium gasolines, only Amoco-Gas guarantees motorists more gas per gallon! Yes, regardless of the make or model car you drive, you get more gas per gallon...for more mileage, more natural power, more economy! Plus—more engine protection, because only Amoco-Gas is lead-free. And no lead means ... no lead deposits to foul vital engine parts! No lead acids to cause muffler corrosion! You actually save on costly repair bills. Today, tonight, or tomorrow for sure— discover the all-round economy of Amoco-Gas. See for yourself why in the past 12 months, more motorists switched to clear, white, unleaded Amoco—than to any other premium gasoline! COEN OIL CO. 1331 Market Ave., South 113 Congratulations!
