I9 sz I U3 MISS MARCELLA HERBST Everyone at Lehman comes in contact with Miss Marcella Herbst sooner or later. Wheth- er looking for lost articles, putting something in the bulletin or coming in tardy, students meet the pleasant and efficient office secre- tary. One of the few persons at Lehman who works the whole year round, Miss Herbst spends the summer arranging classes and schedules. Memories of her helpfulness and of the friendly twinkle in her eye remain with students long after they have left high school. In sincere appreciation of her kind, thoughtful manner, we wish to dedicate the 1952 Polaris to Miss Marcella Herbst, a per- son whom we shall admire and remember for many years in the future. PLAYERS DRAMATICS The Dramatic groups are organized to inspire students who are interested in dramatics and to give them an opportunity to display their talents. To become a Thespian one hundred points are required. Seventy-five of these must be for the participation in at least two acts of a three-act play and the remaining twenty-five for backstage work. The Thespians presented the three-act play Double Door this fall. A dramatic student has to earn fifty points to become a player. Mem- bers are selected for the Freshman Club by Miss Hill after try-outs before her. A group of Fresh- men and Sophomores presented the play Glamour Boy in February. This requires a good knowledge of the vocational guidance pham- phlets and the Dewey decimal system. Mem- bers must be able to do research work with the periodicals, to catalogue and use the in- dex, and to keep the library neat and pre- sentable at all times. LISIC Instrumental music plays an outstand- ig part in Lehman's social functions. Un- er the direction of Samuel Bell, the de- artment has three major branches. The Band acts as a marching band iuring the fall, and takes on the duties f a concert band throughout winter and oring. From it a pep band is chosen to erenade at assemblies, pep rallies, and lasketball games. The Orchestra provided accompani- nent for plays, operettas, and other af- irs. It consists of strings, winds and a rcussion section. I lThe Dance Band plays everything om tango to fox-trot for the pleasure those present at school dances and parties and provides rhythm for all occasions. Our 1951 City Championship was celebrated at our Football Dance. fl DANCES Bill and Connie take the prize for the best corsage. Everybody goes to Lehman dances. Every com- mittee for dance decorations tries to out do the others with the result that the decorations have been very festive. Refreshments are always good and all Lehmanites appreciate this aspect of the dance aside from the other attractions. TAX STAMP ROYALTY The Tax stamp court reign over the assembly. The Tax Stamp assembly was properly opened by a fanfare of trumpets. Amid the suspense of the audience the royal court were presented from be- hind a larger than life journal page. Then the queen and king were fittingly entertained by two songs, one by Wayne Border and one by Ursula Addessi. After the court were presented with beautiful gifts donated by Canton merchants, some more royal entertainment was provided by a piano solo by Pete Paterson and the assembly ended on a very pleasant note. Dick Fawcett served as a very able master of ceremonies. YANTS ELI TE 3 Our Tax stamp Queen and King pose for their picture with their royal rewards. Large stamps of the Lehman variety perform in the assembly for the contest. 1 1 . A liie A X, N. A I I I A ,S AMX! F ff Y 'AL it ll? IN MEMORIAM MARCIA ELAINE WOLF C1937-19521 TO MARCIA by Harley Miller What is excellent, As God lives, is permanent, Hearts are dust, heart's loves remain H eart's love will meet thee again. Emerson And she was good like the morning air, A worthy gift so wondrous rare, She was to us a symbol of youth Courageous, friendly, a tongue of truth, And she was good all the while, Her velvet black hair and radiant smile, A friendly spirit, always a sport The world was her heaveng nature, her court. And she was goody so young to leave Unfinished the many things she might achieve, One shadow behind the mountain goes, And one shy star from the heaven glows. Let to right: John Crawford, presidentg Jean Smith, trearurerg Ellen Gillespie, secretary Scott Bartchy, vice-president. Leading the sophomore class through an exciting year were John Crawford, president, Scott Bartchy, vice-president, Ellen Gillespie, secretary, and Jean Smith, treasurer. The sophs chose Emily Guerra as attendant to the Football Queen. On Stunt Night the sopho- mores presented a take-off on Shakespeare's Julius Caesar . The sophomore class party was a dance with the futuristic theme -the Rocket Rompf' The gym- nasium was transformed into space with modernistic decora- tions. Entertainment featured a quiz show where the contestants wlon a trip to Mars. Diane Kring, Andy Plaut, Mar- la Schneider, and Ellen Gilles- pie were on the Polaris staff. Gerry Stradley and Miller Neff were varsity cheerleaders and Herb Courtney was a member of the reserve squad. J Taking an active part in sports were Jack Nichols, Jed Taylor, George Clouston, Bill' Frank, Lar- ry Goldstein, Bob Carlson, Dave Poorman, and Dan Canterbury. We hope that the class of '54 will continue to support our school activities in the same successful way it has done this year. ' lb ' R, . This is America's top secret' hen an American marks his X on a ballot, he can be certain of one thing. Nobody knows for whom or what he has voted. Itis his secret. No one can influence or coerce him when he votes--and no one can penalize him for how he voted. The secret ballot is one of the big secrets of a strong America. People who can vote without fear or reprisal offer little opportunity for would- be Hitlers and Stalins to take over. And While dishonesty can creep into government, the secret ballot is the one sure Way honest citizens can stamp it out. Communists would be delighted to see the secret ballot eliminated. Their kind of government doesn't succeed unless they can tell you how to vote. And after all, communism offers only one party to vote for! We in America must make many sacrifices to combat Communist ambition. But one thing we must never sacrifice is the priceless right to think and vote according to our consciences. Nor must we ever give up any of the rights that keep this country free and independent. TRADE-MARK REG. U. B. PAT.
