I. to many of his friends, is practically a tradition at Lehman. Many a graduate can remember the story of jean Val jean as told to him by Mr. Hutchens when other events are long forgotten. Patience and understanding are among his outstand- ing qualities. Any pupil of his Algebra I or English I I class will long remember his keen humor and sincere friendship. The yearbook stay? takes great pride in this wholehearted dedication of the 1951 Polaris to Mr. Hutchens. , X . .xx xnxx xgmbgg:-.MXxwmyN... . -A . X Q 1 . ..... ,,,m,j XiM5f3j'QQxQA6,. X -. -. . As the Seniors go... ,gg Senior Review Freshmen Off to school we went, thrilled with the prospects of our first year. We'll never forget Bill Dorland chasing Herb Cox across the stage at a pep assembly. Our class officers were Bill Dorland, Dick Wuske, Susie Wilson, and Shirley Carr. Our first class party, Gold Rushf' started our freshman year off with a bangl Carole Rogers added beauty in the picture by her being freshman football attendant. Excelling in athletics was Barb Call, who was the only frosh on the Scarlet and Gray Varsity Basketball team. In boys' sports we saw Dick Wuske, Cy Paumier, Wendell Horn, Tally Maragas and Tom Nist as future varsity athletes. Our exams being over we looked forward to vacation. Sophomores Merrily we skipped along, walking into Mr. Gross's plane geometry class with confidence and walking out in confusion. Being sophomores, we were superior to the freshmen. Heading our class were Cy Paumier, president, Ioe Bow, vice-president, Nancy Helbig, secretary, and Shirley Allan, treasurer. Entering our picture again was petite Nancy Helbig as our football attendant. The theme of our second party was the Polar Fairf' Nine sophomore girls were members of the Girls' Leaders Club while Donna Uebel and Helen Aungst became members of the Thespians. Changing from drama to music we saw Shirley Allan and Bob Watson in A Cappella. Off to vacation with thoughts of becoming full-pledged juniors. Juniors Here we were again. Our first year as upper classmen started off with Libby Burris and Joe Bow as officers of Student Government. Our class leaders were Bob Watson, president, Wendell Horn, vice-president, Donna Uebel, secretary and Evelyn Mueller, treasurer. Pretty Susie Wilson was our football attendant, and slender Carol Geitgey, prom attendant. We'll always remember Student Government's annual Christmas project, the Clean-up campaign, and our class party, Purple Dream. We were proud to see Dave Davis, Helen Aungst, and Donna Uebel in the school play, Captain Applejackf and to see other juniors in the operetta, Holiday. Excelling in speech and in debate was Gloria Feam with the highest number of N. F. L. credit points. Seven proud juniors were tapped for National Honor Society. The finals coming and going we left L. H. S. to return the following year as seniors. Seniors We entered our last year looking forward to graduation, yet wanting to stay at L. H. S. a little longer. We saw Cy Paumier and Gloria Feam as officers of Student Government, Dave Weaver, Tally Maragas, Libby Burris and Sarah Montgomery were elected class officers. Representing our class were Susie Wilson and Donna Lyons as football queen and attendant, respectively. In athletics Dick Wuske was our football captain while Cy Paumier our basketball captain. For the Hrst time we had a combined class party with the juniors called Halloween Haunt. We'll never forget the pysch test, the Tax Stamp contest, the football dance, the prom, and Miss Lehrniller's appearance as a cheerleader. Here we are at Class Day, then Baccalaureate, and last of all Commencement. Then we'll go saying good-by to the halls of L. H. S. SHIRLEY M. To become a Thespian requires a student to have a hundred points of which seventy-five are for the participation in at least two acts of a three-act play and the remaining twenty- five, for backstage work. The Thespians presented the three-act play One Foot in Heaven this fall. As soon as a dramatic stu- dent has earned Hfty points, he becomes a player. We planned our layouts, saw that all write-ups were done, checked our envelopes, took all our pic- tures, and completed other such activities. When this was iinished, everything had to be proof-read. Those on the staff helped one another so that his section would be ready for the deadline date. The Journal staff worked industriously this year to keep the students informed of the activities that take place. A special edition was put out for the entire student body the day be- fore Christmas vacation. Like previous years the Journal staff success- fully sponsored a tax stamp drive which earned 8350. This income from the tax stamp drive made it possible to have more pictures as well as a larger paper. The capable direction of Miss Esther Smith helped this ambitious group of workers to put out the best paper in Canton. From the Band is chosen a pep band to serenade at assemblies, pep rallies, and basketball games Paul Robinson, Mr. Bell The Orchestra, consisting of strings, winds, and a percussion section, provides accompaniment for plays, operettas, and other such affairs. The Polar Bears, under the leadership of coach jim Robinson in the absence of Roy Sheil, turned in a fair season's record. The scores do not show the determination and light the Bears displayed in every game. The contest that proved to be the most spectacular was the game against Findley which the Bears lost in an overtime heartbreaker by the score of 54-51. For the first time since 1948 Lehman met McKinley and came out on the short end of a 56-67 decisiong however, the Bears' Jack Meola dumped in 28 points and narrowly missed the fieldliouse record set at 30. SYLER P one 1- 3 g Nl if' .dsx Q How and What to tell a COMMUNIST Don't look for physical differences when you try to spot a Communist. Communists are all kinds of people in all walks of life and of all races. A Communist is anyone who believes in the Rus- sian system of govemment, whereby those who govern own everything 'and control all the activ- ities of all the people. A Communist is loyal only to Soviet Russia. As a member of the Communist Party he is dedi- cated for life to the protection of the U.S.S.R. and to the establishment of Communism through- out the world. A Communist will usually deny that he is a Com- munist. There are many Communists who are not in reality card-carrying members of the party. But both types of Communists carry on the same TIIE TIMKEII ROLLE work, although the second type cannot let it be known that he is a member. His real value to the party is in indoctrinating those unsuspecting people in key positions with govemment agencies, schools, unions and churches with Communistic philosophies. When a Communist goes to work on you tell him that you are on to him and his dirty game. Tell him, further, that you think it your patriotic duty to make his activities known to others and to the police. Tell him that you know no tactics are too low for a Communist: lying, cheating, betrayal, ruin and even murder. But be sure to tell him, too, that America is on the alert and that his scheme for world domination is doomed to failure.
