JL 21 -ff Esther G Smith Dedlcatlon As an excellent teacher as a real friend to students, as the spark behind the Lehman ournal. Miss Esther G. Smith has helped to further those ideals which Lehman students admire. We will always cherish her sincerity, subtle humor, good-nature, and energetic personality, which have made us appreciate the privilege of knowing such a person. It is therefore, with great pleasure that the annual staff dedicates the 1946 Polaris to Miss Smith. Their well-chosen officers have proven themselves to be worthy of such a dynamic class. They are jim XX'uske, president: Dick Barnes, vice presidentg Marge NX'heeler. secretary: and Nancy jane Black, treasurer. The varsity football and basketball teams were bolstered this season by a trio of junior Polar Bears: john Maxson, Dean Becker, and jim Wfuske. john Maxson captured city scoring honors with 225 points. The first event of the season was the junior-Senior production of the satirical comedy The Torchhearersn. Shirley Firestone, Fd Balaun, Sallye Silverman, Don McMannis, Frank Hamilton, and john Weaver had leading roles in the dual cast of this play. On October 17 the juniors contributed dark-haired Ellen Sinclair to football's royal family. The juniors did themselves proud December 8 with their novel party, Kiddies Kristmas Kaper . They cam- ouflaged the gym with a big Christmas tree in the middle of the floor, huge candy canes over each basket, and, naturally, mistletoe over the doors. The crowning feature was a comic floor show with Don McMannis as master of ceremonies. Dick Barnes, an able member of the varsity football squad and member of A Cappella choir, was elected president of Lehman's Student Government Associ- ation. Peggy Barker, active in student government and N.F.L., was elected treasurer of this honored organization. In N. F. L. activities this year Shirley Firestone in the dramatic field and Bill Talmage in debate went to Columbus to compete in the state finals of the Ohio State Speech League. This class of 211 represents many schools: W'orley, XY'oodland. Summit. Belle Stone, St. Peters. Avondale, Edge- field, and Plain Center. On December 15 the freshmen elected as their officers Richard Dorland, presi- dentg Larry Looby, vice-presidentg lone Abt, treasurer, and Doris Heggy, sec- retary. With the help of their faculty guardians-Miss Leiter, Miss Riddle, Mr. Berry, Miss Grace Mahan, Mr. Cline, Miss Genevieve Mahan, Miss Shadel, and Miss Seesdorf-the freshmen had a year of diversified activities, and there were many who were outstanding. Marilyn Steiner, one of the most ac- complished of the freshmen, was chosen as football attendant. johnny Santelle brought laurels to his class in the field of boxing. Outstanding on the basketball floor were James Casper, Gene Sue, and Chuck Bolender. Marilyn Colaner and Anne Broad share honors in volleyball, for they both made Scarlet and Gray. The outstanding class activity was the party held Thursday, February 21. In accordance with the holiday they called their dance the Hatchet Hop. The gym was decorated with cherry trees, and the dance programs were in the shape of hatchets. It is nice to see the newcomers taking over so well, and we look with anticipa- tion to their next three years at Lehman. iglf fo ary nZU! y. Printing, engraving, and cover contracts signed, it is a relief to everyone on the staff when the final dummy is completed. The purpose of the annual is to give a picture of a year at Lehman, and the editorial staff, with the helpful sug- gestions of its editor, Marjorie Field, and its adviser, Miss Nancy Lewis, strive to do this in attractive layouts and art work, readable copy, and interesting photographs. Once again this year, the Lehman Reserves enjoyed a very successful basket- ball campaign. Under the tutelage of Coaches Paul Roby and jim Snyder, the Cubs swept to sixteen wins in eighteen encounters. The two defeats came at the hands of McKinley and Lincoln, the latter in an overtime struggle. However, the younger Bears avenged their loss to Lincoln later in the season. The reserves were paced by Captain jack Holl and Herb Cox, towering six-footers, who each copped 166 points for the season. Others who aided in sparking the Cubs were Al Schaaf, Tom Bausher, john Blackmon, Bob and Larry Looby, Dick Dorland, jim Casper, and Chuck Bolender. The freshman quintet, which was a member of the city freshman league, gained three wins in seven games. L.H.s. OPP. L.H.s.
