The 1983 Cross Country season began, as every sports season does, with the anticipa- tion of success. The Lehman harriers partici- pated in the Shelby County Preview for the first time in many years, and did well, with Darrell Austin picking up the trophy for the top sophomore in Shelby County. Coach Bar- horst stated that our record improved over the previous season, as the team developed more depth and better training habits. The first time in many seasons, girls joined the team, although they were one short of fielding a complete girls' teams. As the season came to a close, Darrell Aus- tin was the only Lehman runner to advance to district competition where he nearly finished well enough to qualify for the state meet. C A. Jon Koon tied the school record with a 33 against Fort Loramie, while Mark Kinsella was named the MVP after many times captur- ing medalist honors during the season.
