NAMED TOP 73 On June 30, 1983, T. H. Bell, Secretary of Education, announced in Whitter, California the names of 152 public schools throughout the United States considered by the National Commission on Excellence in Education as “exemplary,” and “unusually effective in meeting the needs of their students.” Of the 152 schools selected, seventy- three were considered as “comprehensive public high schools. Leesville High School was among that select group. The announcement by Secretary Bell was preceeded by evaluations at the state and national levels, by a review of each school's accomplishments and by on-site visits by representatives of the Department of Education. The evaluations concerned everything from academic accomplishments to drop-out rates, from student government to interscholastic athletic competition, from scores on standardized tests to the “general atmosphere of the school. EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION 1982-83 LHS Program of Studies and the cleanliness of the girl's bathrooms. The evaluations were complete, thorough and detailed. They validated what the students and faculty of Leesville High School had long known — we are The Best AAA School in Louisiana.” The ceremonies recognizing our school as one of the best in our nation took place in Washington, D.C. and in Leesville. Louisiana. On September 28, 1983. Mr. Barney Wilson and Mr. Jim Kitts, in behalf of our students and faculty, accepted from Secretary Bell on the South Lawn of the White House a banner which reads Excellence in Education, 1982-83. At homecoming, November 4, 1983, Mr. Richard Reese, principal, commenced the following presentations: Mrs. Monica Harrison, representing the United States Department of Education, presented a plaque to Student Council President Ronald Seastrunk which reads U.S. Department of Education Secondary School Recognition Program recognizes LEESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL, Leesville. Louisiana for Outstanding Progress Toward EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION. 1982-83. T. H. Bell. Secretary of Education. Also present was Mr. Willis Farris, representing the school board, who commended the school for its outstanding commendations.
