In the end, the senior class had their six officers. Officers elected were: president — Luke Hadnot; vice-president — Billy Metlin; secretary — Holly Wentz; treasurer — Jackie Schrader; sgt.-at-arms — Carol Taylor; reporter — Shelly Nicholas. As Homecoming events became the focus of the school, the senior class excelled. For the first time in three years the class won the float competition; the theme for the float was “Trash the Broncos.” As for the homeroom door decorations, Mrs. Hadnots’ senior homeroom won. The theme for the contest was “Football, Hot dogs, Apple pie, and LHS.” Before the year ended the seniors definitely accomplished and exceeded their projected goals. n This year's class officers are: president — Sam Hoecker; vice-president — Kelly Kaiama: secretary — Kimberly Klein; treasurer — Payton Smith; sgt - at-arms — Tom Clady; reporter — Wendy Bedell. The year kicked off with homecoming events. The class elected Payton Smith and Kelly Kaima as maids. The junior class has the responsibility of raising money to fund the Prom. They raised money by sell- ing candy and other fund-raising activities which were a big success. 10PH0M0RE5 The sophomore class elected their officers at the beginning of the year which include: president — Jennifer Ames; vice-president — Marci McRae; secretary — Suzette Kuhlow; treasurer — Jennifer Schwartz; reporter — Candy Belton; and sgt.-at- arms — Dick Fetting. The class received several individual honors which include: Junior Academy of Science presenta- tions, letterman in football, basketball, golf and baseball and numerous other awards. Jason Best, Julie Goins, Suzette Kuhlow, and Russell Burleson presented their papers at Junior Academy. Included in the Homecoming events was the electing of maid Vanessa Smith. People such as Tom Crosby, Jerry Howard, Melissa Smith, Ned Tilley and Dicky Fetting were named first lettermen in their respective sports. Amy Carper represented the sophomores as Student Council Recording Secretary. Twenty-two of the sophomores were on the Principal's List. 10 FRESHMEN The 1983 freshman class of Leesville High School has had a tremendous year. The class, which numbers 332 students, has been involved in numerous school activities, and they have been well represented in contests. At the beginning of the school year, class officers were elected. Those who were elected included the following: Dennis Mitchell, president; Beverly Goins, vice-president; Virginia Freshley, treasurer; Brenda Weaver, secretary; Lynde Holsomback, reporter; and Theresa Magee, sergeant-at-arms. Some of the freshmen won prestigious individual honors. Kim Dowden was named Vernon Parish Rodeo Queen. Theresa Magee was elected by the class to be the freshman maid at homecoming. Several students took the PSAT and SAT and they did very well on these tests. Of course, John Gass had the highest score in the freshman class, which was also the highest score in the entire school. NAMED TOP 73 On June 30, 1983, T. H. Bell, Secretary of Education, announced in Whitter, California the names of 152 public schools throughout the United States considered by the National Commission on Excellence in Education as “exemplary,” and “unusually effective in meeting the needs of their students.” Of the 152 schools selected, seventy- three were considered as “comprehensive public high schools. Leesville High School was among that select group. The announcement by Secretary Bell was preceeded by evaluations at the state and national levels, by a review of each school's accomplishments and by on-site visits by representatives of the Department of Education. The evaluations concerned everything from academic accomplishments to drop-out rates, from student government to interscholastic athletic competition, from scores on standardized tests to the “general atmosphere of the school. The on- site evaluation, by Dr. Antoine Garibaldi, examined the attitudes of students, parents and faculty, the EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION 1982-83 LHS Program of Studies and the cleanliness of the girl's bathrooms. The evaluations were complete, thorough and detailed. They validated what the students and faculty of Leesville High School had long known — we are The Best AAA School in Louisiana.” The ceremonies recognizing our school as one of the best in our nation took place in Washington, D.C. and in Leesville. Louisiana. On September 28, 1983. Mr. Barney Wilson and Mr. Jim Kitts, in behalf of our students and faculty, accepted from Secretary Bell on the South Lawn of the White House a banner which reads Excellence in Education, 1982-83. At homecoming, November 4, 1983, Mr. Richard Reese, principal, commenced the following presentations: Mrs. Monica Harrison, representing the United States Department of Education, presented a plaque to Student Council President Ronald Seastrunk which reads U.S. Department of Education Secondary School Recognition Program recognizes LEESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL, Leesville. Louisiana for Outstanding Progress Toward EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION. 1982-83. T. H. Bell. Secretary of Education. Also present was Mr. Willis Farris, representing the school board, who commended the school for its outstanding commendations. ••l 14 SENIORS The senior class once again had a tremendous year. Col. Robert Freshley of LHS. Because of his outstanding dedication to not only his JROTC cadets but to the students of LHS, the yearbook staff felt he truly deserved the honor we bestowed on him. January 1955, Freshley graduated from LSU with a B.S. in education. He received a commission in the U.S. Army at the time of graduation. He attended LSU on a full-time athletic scholarship, played basketball and has been the Senior Army Instructor for the last six years. He has been instrumental in obtaining a large number of four-year ROTC scholarships and many service Academy appointments. He served St. Michael’s Catholic Church as a religious instructor for three years. Col. Freshley also served as St. Michael’s Parish Council vice president for one year and president for two years. Col. Freshley has left an indelible mark upon this school because of his willingness to devote his energies to the student body and community. 34 flBMINISTRflTIQN FflGULTY The teachers and administrators of LHS need to be recognized for the diligent work they do for the students of LHS. The administrators are the people the students see in their offices or walking around the halls. They are usually in their offices, and are working hard to organize the school in such a man- ner that it runs smoothly. The teachers at LHS are largely responsible for the honors bestowed upon this school. They pass their knowledge to the students of LHS; not only the subject matter of the course, but also the knowledge they have obtained from their experiences. On the following pages are the faces of the teachers, administrators, custo- dians, secretaries, and counselors of LHS. SEW0QL BOARD Congratulations! You have created a masterpiece of memories. I know that you will enjoy even now remembering the events of this past school year, but as time goes by and you get older this book will become a priceless treasure. Many times in the future you will take this annual and wander back to yesteryear when things were perhaps more simple. So because of this it is imperative that a yearbook be comprehensive, beautiful, well formatted and enduring; this yearbook is all of these things and more. The Vernon Parish School Board, the Central Office Staff and I commend you on a very splendid publication. Sincerely, John C. Burns, Superintendent Vernon Parish Schools 35 Congratulations to the 1983-84 yearbook staff for such an outstanding yearbook. The events you have recorded will be lifetime memories for the students and faculty of Leesville High School. The students, faculty, staff and school community are to be commended for helping to develop the pride in Leesville High School that is so evident. It is gratifying to all of us when we hear comr 4'e from visitors about how impressed they are wn„ our school. These comments are a result of high expec- tations by the student body and staff and the dedication of everyone involved to reach the high goals set forth. Thanks to everyone, this has been a very rewarding year for me personally. The cooperation and support I have received has made my first year as principal of Leesville High School a year I will always cherish and remember. It is my hope that you enjoy your 1984 Leesville High School yearbook and the memories it holds. Each of you are special and I hope you know how proud I am to be a part of such an outstanding school. Best Wishes to each of you. COL. KITTS MR. WILS0N ASST. PRINCIPALS Pictured above are the men who help keep this school running smoothly. Without their stern hands many problems would arise. Col. Kitts is over cur- riculum at LHS and Mr. Wilson is in charge of discipline. Every year Col. Kitts must decide on what courses of instruction will be and must be taught during the school year. Without the help of Mr. Wilson as the disciplinarian of LHS minor problems would become major ones. Even though he has been an assistant principal for a very short time, he has gained the respect and fear of the student body. Without these two men the school could not func- tion as it does, and for that we salute them. LENflHflN SEfliTRUNK E0UNSEL0RS The two women pictured above are very influential in the lives of each of the students at LHS. Mrs. Lenahan works with the juniors and seniors and Mrs. Seastrunk with the freshmen and sophomores. Mrs. Lenahan helps with class scheduling and anything that deals with college acceptance. Mrs. Seastrunk also helps with class changes and helps during ACT and PSAT testing. SECRETARIES These ladies keep the records, class schedules, lunch tickets and all other numerous tasks straight. When one walks into the main office he would see the following: Mrs. Hildebrand, (upper left), busy working on the computer; Mrs. VanDine, (upper right), working on homeroom attendance and checking someone out of school; Mrs. Upshaw, (lower right), stamping the lunch tickets or handling phone calls. Down the hall is Mrs. Williams, (lower left), anyone could find her busy at her desk working on senior scholarship forms and tapping into the state computer for information on careers. t Carlin Andre Eng. The cafeteria workers not only must contend with cooking our meals but they then must clean the tables and kitchen appliances. We rarely see these people doing their jobs so we take it for granted that everything will always be clean. Whenever we need to have a lock cut off or any other small task, we can count on one of the janitors to help. When we get hungry and want a meal, we can count on going to the lunchroom for a hot, good meal. Since we hardly ever thank these people, this print will always say “thank you for everything! 45 Mrs. Patricia F. Crawford was selected as the recipient of the Louisiana Association of Business Educators Outstanding Business Teacher Award.” Her other awards include being selected as Vernon Parish Teacher of the Year in 1979-1980, elected as Leesville High School Senior class Favorite Teacher in 1982-1983, and selected by Vernon Parish business teachers as Vernon Parish Business Teacher of the Year in 1983-1984. Mrs. Crawford, the Leesville High School Wampus Cat Yearbook salutes you. 48 UNDERELflSSMEN LHS underclassmen contributed greatly to the life of the school this year. In the section that follows are faces of the students who are proud to be at LHS. The officers of these classes had a heavy load on their shoulders and they carried the load faithful- ly to the end. The underclassmen numbered a little over 900 students. They were enrolled in classes from trigonometry to woodworking. The range of personal interests is shown through their extracur- ricular activities: science, sports, and vocational ex- pertise. The underclassmen had many anxious moments before they became the upperclassmen of LHS but they will meet their challenge in the near future. Sam Hoecker Pres. These clubs express the varied interests of a student body. When students come together in groups of common interests, they begin to function as a unit. If one is interested in science, there is a club for him; the Science and Math Club, sponsored by Dr. Dempsey. If a person is not science oriented and prefers a vocational club, then LHS has it; Industrial Arts Club. The Teen In- volvement Council takes a special interest in educating the elementary children in what is going on around them. Future Business Leaders of America is tremendously active in learning what makes the business world tick. It makes no dif- ference what you’re interested in; LHS has the club for you. It was the first time in 19 years that the LHS Wam- pus Cat football team made it to the playoffs. Even though we were eliminated in the second game, our players proved their worth to the state. The basket- ball team didn’t make as big a showing as last year, but they complied a respectable record. Track and Field members once again proved their potential as track stars. Leesville High School's less prominent sports were also memorable in their achievements: Golf, Tennis, Baseball and Softball. LHS is proud of their athletes and the athletes are proud to repre- sent LHS in competition. Tom This year the coaching staff of LHS had some changes, starting with the head coach. Head coach Jack Andre was named to this position in the fall of 1983. His prior position was head coach at Istrouma High School in Baton Rouge. When he began his job here, his goals were and are to have a winning season in the program and to have a good athletic program, along with individual success for the team members. The other coaches range from football to golf. Coach Howard, girls track; Coach Jor- dan. basketball and golf; Coach Neubert, baseball; Coach Raiford, girls basketball; Coach Rolon, tennis; Coach Smith, football and basketball; Coach Taylor, softball; Coach Williams. J-%L - Football Success Percy Burns Mark Clay Cats to Playoffs Abbeville Game , Chris Williams Leesville High Wampus Cats came into the stadium thundering as they beat Abbeville 24-9. The game started with a march of 78 yards in ten plays, ending the drive with an eight yard pass from quarterback Al Capello to slot back Calvin Dixon. The first half ended with Leesville leading 15-7. Abbeville made several attempts to move the ball down the field, but the pac-cat defense stopped them at every corner of the field. The game ended, Leesville 24, Abbeville 9. The gold rush totaled 255 yards compared to Ab- beville 129 yards. The lack of yards for Abbeville was due to an impressive showing of the pac-cats. Cats Continue to Win 165 Wossman Game Wossman beat Leesville 32-0, but this did not reflect the skill of the Leesville team. Although picked to finish last in their district, it seemed that the Wampus Cats didn't know the definition of the word quit; defeat was meaningless to them. They came into the stadium with heads held high, and left the same, with a few bruises to remind them of their terrific efforts toward a win. This year’s Wampus Cat football team could be characterized by one word, character.” After winning four straight games, they lost two, both district games. This placed them in a must-win situation for the remaining three games. In the last game against Jennings, the Wampus Cat team was faced not only with winning the game but also winning by ten points. During the last play of the game Alan Capello made a breath taking pass to Percy Burns, who scored the winning points. Thus, the Wampus Cat football team advanced to the state playoffs. 1983-84 Wampus Cats Seniors Juniors Freshmen Sophomores • ft 166 Basket Row 1: Daniel Rowzee, Matthew Wood, Arnold McPhearson. Having lost many key players, the basektball team unfortunately had to rebuild. The team rebuilt many positions such as head coach, formerly Mike Mallet, Center Nikita Wilson, Guard, Steve Kennedy, and Forward Steve Travis. Leesville High School had only two starting returners, Grant Westerchil, and Randy Kennedy along with new starters, Fitz Crittle, Ronald Seastrunk, Derrick Ed- wards, Mathew Woods, Keith Holland. 169 Girls’ Varsity Basketball Row 1: Regina Deans, Carla Smith, Vanessa Gordon, Lorenda Smart, Michell Hall, Coach Patsy Raiford, Miller, Faye Shaw, Ginnie Freshley, Connie Howard, Kim Dowden, Dina Johnson, Shelia Ford. The girls’ basketball season consisted of twelve wins and ten losses. The district season ended with seven wins and five losses. Two of the team members qualified for All District: Connie Howard was nominated to the first team while Kim Dowden was given Honorable Mention. Overall the team had a good season although they lost six seniors this year. The highlight of the girls’ season was their first district game when they beat Jennings in a double overtime. «• 170 Girls’ Softball Team Row 1: Michon Brown. Carla Smith. Becky Mayeaux. The Leesville High Tennis Team opened up their ’84 season with two quick victories and finished by sending two players to the State Tournament in Shreveport. Under second year Coach Roger Rolon, the Cats began with victories over St. Mary's of Natch- itoches (7-3), and their first-ever triumph over DeRidder (8-6). The turning point of the season oc- curred in Pineville where the Cats lost 7-5. From that point on they struggled, losing two matches to Menard, 10-7, 8-6, and to DeRidder 8-6. The regular season ended with a 6-5 victory over St. Mary's. The regional tournament was held on the cam- pus of 10-time defending champion Menard (30- 1). Menard was victorious again but Leesville qualified top-seeded Donnie Langford and Cackie Walters as a mixed doubles team for the State tournament. The 1984 Leesville High School Golf Team had a very successful season. The LHS golfers brought home a fourth place finish or better in six of the seven tournaments in which they participated as a team. A third place finish at Barbe High School’s tournament in Lake Charles at the Mallard Love Golf Course was their most impressive team per- formance. The team ended the season on a good note as they missed qualifying for the state meet by four strokes at the regional tournament. Tennis When asked to comment on the season Rolon was very optimistic. We showed tremendous im- provement over last season when I took over the team one month into our schedule. My goal was to build a respectable team that could compete with anyone without embarrassment. Last year we scored a total of 5 points in three matches. We are definitely on the road to recovery.” At the spring awards banquet, Senior Paul Bon- fanti was presented the MVP trophy for winning 93% of his matches in 2 doubles and 3 singles. An award was also given to both Walters and Langford for competing in the State Tournament. Golf The Season was not over for two of the LHS golfers after the regional meet because an 81 by Ned Tilley and an 82 by Danny Wilson qualified them for the Triple-A State Tournament in Baton Rouge as medalists. Ned shot rounds of 80 and 75 to tie for fourth place. Danny shot an 87 and an 84 to finish in a tie for twenty-second place. Doing my tasks as sports editor, business manager, and editor-in-chief has given me a sense of responsibility and knowing what it means to leave a mark. I’ll miss working on the yearbook tremendously when I leave high school. I have been able to help produce a book that will be on the shelves of students and ad- ministrators for a very long time to come. This year I have had the pleasure to be editor-in-chief of the 1983- 84 LHS Wampus Cat yearbook and to work with people who exerted their potential to produce such a fine year- book as this. I wish to thank my staff members: Randy Batson, Jannese Cormier, Patricia Kirby, Donnie Langford, Demetrius Lolyd, Dianna Miller, Chad Palma, Melanie Partridge, Chrisy Ross, Dee Dee Sloop, Tabatha Thompson, and Mary Wolgemuth. I also wish to commen- date Mrs. Sonya Smith for her success as the new year- book advisor this year. Best wishes for your future endeavors, Connie Haun Editor-in-Chief 208 . ,
