Dr. Russell and Coach Thomas As the 1974-75 school year closes, Dr. H. L. Russell is completing his third year as principal of LHS. As a direct result of his influence, LHS is a cleaner, more orderly school than most others of its size and complexity. At the same time, the comrade- ship among the students, as well as their mannerly and friendly behavior, is often remarked by visitors. Dr. Russell believes that school should be much more than simple academics. He feels that education is complete only when it includes social instruction as well as scholastic. It is well known that Dr. Russell expects a great deal of the students at LHS. But if he is quick to criticize, he is quicker to praise. As LuAnne Armentrout commented at the Teacher Appreciation Assembly sponsored by TIC, Dr. Russell may yell at us, but he’s also the first to yell with us.” A formal statement of Dr. Russell’s philosophy of education follows: While our major mission is to teach our students the academic subjects, we also recognize that the school is an educational opportunity in a social setting, and that we also need to assist young people to develop a sense of social responsibility through involvement with and participation in a variety of activities during their high school years. Our program is therefore designed not only to teach the facts and how to use the facts to solve problems but also to help develop in our students the realization of the great principle of duty . . . duty to ourselves ... to our families . . . to our community ... to our country ... to others. This, too, is education, in its finest sense.” Dr. and Mrs. Russell talk together at Dr. Russell joins Mr. Malcolm Smart on the basketball sidelines. 4 Administration discuss school procedures.
