We Present Leesville High 1966 Contents Administrations Classes Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Features Organizations Sports Advertising God pity them both; and pity us all Who vainly the dreams of youth recall For of all sad words of tongue or pen The saddest are these; 'It might have been!’ ” John Greenleaf Whittier 2 Dedication MRS. IMELDA WATSON It is an honor to pay tribute to one who has become such a genuine part of Leesville High School. Her interest in her students and her eagerness to help them have endeared her to all who have come under her influence. Because she means so much to so many, we the yearbook staff are proud to dedicate the 1966 WAMPUS CAT to Mrs. Imelda Watson. Mrs. Watson is a native of Vernon Parish and graduated from Pickering High School. She received her B. S. Degree from North- western State College in Home Economics and has taught at Leesville High School for twenty years. Besides her outstanding work as a teacher, she sponsors the yearbook and F.H.A. She al- ways lends a helping hand at Homecoming. Christmas, Jr.-Sr. Prom, or with any other extra- curricular activities, and is chairman of the faculty flower and gift fund. She has served as president of Delta Kappa Gamma, an hon- orary women teachers’ society; holds a life membership in P.T.A.; and has served as chairman of the Vernon Parish Home Eco- nomics Teachers for curriculum development. By encouraging the students of Leesville High School to develop their talents, you have made their lives more enjoyable. For all these things we are grateful. There is a destiny that makes us brothers None goes his way alone. All that we send into the lives of others Comes back into our own. —Markham 3 Mrs. Watson supervises a class. Editor's Message Memory is a fragile thing-- A bee’s honey and its sting! Newton With the passing years you will turn through these pages and recall scenes you saw, things you heard, and words you read. You will realize how your days at Leesville High were filled with memories you will cherish forever. They will produce honey” and stings”. Because many of our students are military dependents who come and go, the rest of the student body must make them feel welcome. It takes “harmony to help these people be a part of UH.S. Changing principals at mid-semester re- quired the efforts of all students to keep Lees- ville High a better place to work and play. Harmony” helped us through the transition. Harmony between the academic and extracur- ricular helped us make a bigger and better name for L.H.S. Our candidate for a state Beta office placed in the top three, our Speech team won first in state, our musical groups rated high at festivals, our students won top honors at literary rallies, our athletic groups re- ceived recognition for a fine job, and one of our fac- ulty members was appointed to a State Advisory Council. Throughout the 1966 Wampus Cat you will see how Harmony Reigns At Leesville High School Through The Help Of The Students And The Community” for 687 students. It has been an honor and privilege to edit the 1966 Wampus Cat. I hope you enjoy the pictures and writings, and may relive the honey” and stings”. May God bless and keep you. __ Linda Johnson Editor 4 The Wampus Cat Staff at Work Brenda Stanly Organizations Editor; Pam Byrd, Sports Editor; Tommy Davis, Business Manager; and Sue Pennington, Feature Editor. Doris Martin and Annette Hughes, Typists Penny Pollacia, Sophomore Editor; Sally Word, Freshman Editor; Tandy Bell, Junior Editor; and Linda Haymon, Senior Editor. 5 Harmony Reigns at Leesville the Students and Our churches provide the spiritual enlightenment that each of us needs. Religion in- stills in us the desire to work with others and teaches stand- ards for all of us to live by. Mrs. Curry Ford presents David Smith, student body president, and Mr. Kimble Marler, world history teach- er, with American flags. The flags were donated by the Pilot Club of Leesville and were given to the So- cial Studies Department. Mr. T. L. Berry, Mayor R. J. Fertitta, Gen. Kelsie Reeves, Commanding General of Fort Polk, Senator Speedy Long, and Mr. Cutris Bradshaw tour Leesville High School. Because so many of the students at LHS are military dependents, our schools function more efficiently due to the interest displayed by officials of school, city, and Fort Polk. High Through the Help of the Community Leesville High students pose on the steps of the Courthouse. Through law enforcement and civic- minded citizens harmony reigns in our community. The students play a vital role in making our city a better place to live. Our television system was displayed at the Louis- iana State Fair. This is another example of how har- mony exists between the school, community and state. Many LHS students use the parish library for their school work. Here some Leesville High students use the educational facilities available to the public. Harmony Helps L.H.8. Change Leaders Our Principal Mr. Joe Wec+erchil It is a very distinct privilege to congratulate the sponsors and staff of the 1966 WAMPUS CAT for this contribution to the life and activities of another school year at L.H.S. The yearbook formally records the vivid congeniality and understanding that the student body and faculty exemplify. Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines Harmony as: ‘‘Just adaptation of parts to each other; agreement between the parts of a design or composition giving unity of effect...” As you study your yearbook you will note these elements of Harmony as they have existed in Wampus Cat Land. Let’s hope that this is just a beginning for all of us with the tasks, trials and challenges that lie ahead. Best Wishes to the student body who has made possible the true picture of Leesville High School. Mr. Joe Parker, former principal of Leesville High School, resigned at mid-semester to work on his Doctor- ate of Psychology at L.S.U. He served as principal of Leesville High for the past four and a half years. 8 Harmony in the Front Office Makes the School Run Efficiently Mr. Bullock Mr. Richie Bullock is assistant principal of LHS. Among his duties are supervising the lunch room, assisting with the operation of the school, coaching the football team, and head coach of our track team. Guidance Counselor, Mr. Jack Bostwick, advises LHS students as to what curriculum to follow, scholarships available, and in- forms the student of his abilities and needs. Helping the student with moral, social, and spiritual problems is a large part of Mr. Bost- wick's work. Mr. Bostwick Just ask Mrs. Moss. seems to ring a familiar bell. Mrs. Racheal Moss, secretary, sees nearly every student at LHS each day. Besides doing all the secretarial work in the office, she signs tardy slips, collects money for various things, finds students for teachers and other students, sometimes runs the pub- lic address system, and generally has her hands full. Mrs. Moss Mr. Bradshaw Speaks to You Friends: It is a privilege to bring you greetings from the Vernon Parish School Board and to compliment you for making possible a record of your school activities for us to review and enjoy for many years to come. The pictorial record of buildings and facilities show signs of progress but these things are only empty shells without you--our students and teachers. The true worth of any school is shown in the quality of its product. Students, you have the privilege of living in the most exciting, challenging and turbulent period in man's history, but with this privilege will come great and grave responsibility. The way you face the pressures and solve the problems will determine tomorrow’s world. Best wishes to each individual represented in this publication. Sincerely, Curtis Bradshaw, Superintendent Vernon Parish Schools Mr. Bradshaw, Superintendent of Vernon Parish Schools, points to a drawing of the Leesville High School Cam- pus. 10 As the dark clouds gather in the sky, the American flag waves over the Vernon Partsn School Board Office. The Guidance Services Guidance and pupil person- nel services directed by staff members with specialized prep- aration are an integral part of the educational program and are especially designed to as- sist in focusing the entire edu- cational process on the indi- vidual. These services are or- ganized to give continuous assistance to each student in knowing himself as an individ- ual and as a member of the so- ciety; in making the most of his strengths and in correcting or compensating for limita- tions; in relating this informa- tion realistically to his needs and potentialities; in helping him with the social—moral — spiritual problems common to youth; and in discovering and developing creative interests and appreciations. Guidance services provide an inventory of the individual, appropriate socioeconomic information, counsel- ing, educational and job placement, and follow-up and evaluation. Each member of the school staff has his own responsibility in the guidance program and works cooperatively with other members of the staff. All members of the guidance and teaching staffs understand their mutual re- sponsibilities in helping each student to plan and carry out the course of action adapted to his personal needs.
