This has been a year ot many changes with so many of our boys and a few of the faculty going into the service, but it has been a great year nevertheless. Our theme is carried out through the antics of Gremlin Gus and all his mischievous little pals: They cavort through their classes-represented by the Ground School - while their extra-curricular activities are carried out through Squadron Tactics. In the Combat Area they display their power as athletes and finally they meet their match in the Big Shots -or superlatives. We hope that this book will be a constant source of enjoyment both now and in the years to come. R. A. This is your news correspondent bringing you the latest news from the world at large! Flash! New York, New York-Mary Nichols stars in big Broadway Musical, stop. Show stops! Word has iust come that Christine Davis is resting at the Merritt 8K Fussell Dude Ranch. The latest night club craze of the country is Jimmy Clyde Pennington and her Penny Serenaders-Jeanette, Ophelia, and Nancy-with Robert Russ and his orchestra. About town: Passed Don Baxter and Jack Shore on the same old bench. Maggie Morrison Schuaff- ler walked by rolling little Leslie, the third addition to her little white cottage. The billboards are adver- tising Yvonne MoIchanoff's Russian Ballet Troupe opening their tenth week at the music hall. The talk of the town is the recent merger of those two prominent continental society members in St. Paul's Ca- thedral in London, Blanche Bosanquet of Mount Vernon, Virginia, and Stuart Gilchrist of Main Street, Leesburg. The morning mail carried the news of Ruthe Crenshaw who is now secretary in the State Veterans' Home-still after soldiers. In Padgett's Drug Store while waiting for change, Pickle told me that her old friend Lenore Hunter is now employed as model for the Premium Peroxide Producers. Through the Underground and the Party Line: Gerry Lee is now modeling the latest fashions for the I. C. More Company. We find P-Nut Matthews coaching at Georgia Tech and little wife, 'Laine, coaching little Jimmie. Heard that Jean Hungerford finally collapsed under the strain of carrying all that insignia around and is now recuperating at Dr. A. L. Chesser's Rest Home. Miss Hungerford is still trying to decide between a Colonel and a Commander. The latest Washington rumor is that Rear Admiral Newman has been made a full Admiral, spouse Ruthie is still chasing him from port to port. Listening in on my favorite party line, it reminded me that Virginia Hunter is now supervisor of all the telephone companies in Central Florida. When the final reports were in, it was announced that Doug. Carlton was elected mayor of Okahumpka. We found him discussing plans-for a better city-with his secretary-Wilma. CLASS HISTORY Upon our arrival to L. H. S., we all wandered around the halls for weeks seeking our correct location. We battled through the seventh grade with Mary Jean Floyd as our able president. By the time we reached the eighth grade we were beginning to feel our importance to such an extent that Maggie Morrison came to school with lip stick on and Bampy had a real car date-unchaperoned. Our freshman year found Stelle Neal at the wheel for us. At last the tables had turned. For the first time the boys were chasing the girls, that is all except McCart, and he was still scared to death of a girl. Our Sophomore year submitted our first boy president, Howard Trumn. We felt quite grown up now and neglected when we didn't secure a Friday night date. Hello! What's this? Yes, Stu Gilchrist made his appear- ance at L. H. S. As we attained our rank as Juniors, we elected as our president Jean Windram. Our class rings arrived only to be exchanged for a Sub-deb pin or the like of it. What a Life , that memorable junior play, proved our talent and ability. The biggest surprise of the year was the wonderful prom-topping all previous ones given in L. H. S. Jim Matthews was chosen to wind up our twelve years of school life, with his staff, including, Vice-President Elaine Matthews, this able assist- antl Corresponding Secretary Shirley Wiley, Recording Secretary Jo. Jordan, and Treasurer Tilly Carra- way. Then of course, there was our Man of the Year , Stu Gilchrist, our student body president. All the girls started a new fad, Marriage! Making definite plans at least. Baxter left his street bench and offered his services to Uncle Sam. Bourlay and Newman, knowing a good thing when they saw it, ioined the class of '44, As time for graduation draws near, we aren't quite as anxious about it as we have been for the past twelve years. The class of '44 has had a wonderful time going through it all. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the seniors of I944, do declare this to be our last will and testament. S. shook for was it our knees! in '39 as the graduates of L. E. S. moved in with the hope of moving out again in about six years. After we had learned to get to class without a compass, we handed the responsibility of leading the class to Charles Broadway. The next year was easier. Now we knew how to run to the cafeteria without getting stopped by a teacher. Marcile Bragg and Ruby Ann Tripp were the two new inmates , During our second year in L. H. S. Millicent Schaeffer reigned with a sturdy C'?! hand. Ah! Now we were the leaders of Junior High School and we lived up to the standard of being at the head of all the mischief we could get into after Senior High had first choice of the dirty work! Patsy Ayers took over as class president. There were five new members: Gladys Rainey, Mary Ant' Battle, Tommy Drake, Dorothy Brinson and Ewellise Carl. The present Junior Class was beginning their Sophomore year in '42 Dixie Jean Allen, the daughter of our new principal, enrolled in our class. Three other people decided to take a chance: N. M. Hicks, Albert Lewis and that cute little Jack Newman! We struggled through this pre-Junior year with Buddy Bourlay at the head of the Class. Juniors! We started the year off right by electing our class officers. Margaret Hayter as our President: Richard Patterson, Vice-President: Betty Sue Lynch, Secretary: Dorothy Crabb, Corresponding Secretary, and Charles Harvey as Treasurer. LaDean Peters decided to come back this year. Two others, Ruth Hunter and Billy Bob Branch, showed up at the beginning of our fifth year in L. H. S. The Junior play, The Red Spider , turned out to be the biggest hit in years despite the difficulties involved. As to the coming year, our aim is to be the best Senior Class yet! LEVINSON Homeroom Teachers Motto: Carpe Diem Colors: Red cmd White Flower: Red Rose What happened September 4, I934? No, the president of the U. S. was not born. Wrong again, that wasn't the day the banks tailed. Give up? The Class of '46 officially began on that date. lt was that day that they entered Leesburg schools for the first time. Remember the time that first year they had trying to understand Dot Gerakios who as yet could not speak English-it was all Greek to them. The thing indelibly printed on our minds that happened in the next few years was the day the new fire escape was tried out. Last of all whizzing down the tube came Mrs. Strickland with the funniest look on her face. Needless to say she never used it during fire drills again. The following year the girls blended their voices with those of the boys iwho were still soprano, tool in our operetta, the White Gypsy . In our last year in grammar school we all became interested in dancing, performing in a minuet here and in Eustis. Also it was about then that the T. N. T. organization was first organized. 'Course all the girls were getting permanents, and Dargan Montgomery, while combing Judy James' newly curled locks, got the comb caught. The teacher remedied the situation in a novel way-she cut it out. These nine months ended with the coming of Billy Kilgore and Jackeye Gardner, king and queen of May. At last we had made it. All that remained of our grade school years were the pictures at gradua- tion, our white diplomas, and fond memories. We iourneyed to L. H. S. and walked around gazing at the building and the Seniors wondering if we'd ever be that big. The best vypy to spend our time, we decided, was trying to get lost 'in the halls. Our efforts failed and we arrived safely in class. Now we were Freshmen and entitled to special privileges and front seats in assembly. Homework had become a thing of the past and dating a thing of the present. With Annette Alderman at the wheel and Billy Stegall and Martha Reeves as back seat drivers we skidded and careened through our ninth year. And at last we are in high school-Sophomores! Our number has dropped until our roll reads only 78 boys and girls. The boys showed their strength by electing Billy Stegall, Buddy Sellar, and Richard Driggers as officers. We began getting our names in the Lake Breezes and ourselves in various organizations. And so we move happily and haphazardly on into our last two years. SOPHOMORE I OFFICERS JIMMY DE VANEY . . . Following the example set by last year, they launched another successful scrap metal drive with a total ot 31,000 pounds collected. The Hallowe'en carnival ottered another opportunity in the form ot a ball-toss booth. During a lapse in school activities, the Student Council began to make plans tor a better Senior room. For the enjoyment ot the students, gala dances were held in the gym, while others were held in the Senior room. Throughout the year, however, the Student Council did many other minor iobs, such as reprinting the last year's Senior activity cards and repairing and putting up the attractive sign in tront ot the high school. The Student Council planned a program to boost the sale ot defense stamps. lt was done by placing colorful placards in the hall, writing articles in the school newspaper, Lake Breezes, and by giving students a goal to shoot at in the torm of trying to buy a ieep with the money collected from the stamp sales. The proiect that the Student Council feels most proud in being able to take part, however, is the Youth Recreation Center, which the Council teels sure will help to build a better community in relation to both the youth and adults of Leesburg. Following through last football season, the band played at every home game and also put on a special drill. As an added attraction our band went to Ocala for the game there. The band also played for the annual community pageant in December. We put on a concert for the labor camp on a Sunday. By this time the band was really at work on their contest music. They knew what was ahead for six other bands were coming here April I3.
