RAVELINGS 1928 Qllaza 'ltliatnrg CLASS history is a lot like a problem in arithmeticg adding. sub- tracting, multiplying, and dividing. Adding the new membersg subtracting those who leaveg multiplying the students times their books. and dividing their knowledge from their books. the results are the graduates. Some are cancelled out and some are carried over and at last the answer is reached. Applying this principle to the class of '28, you will find that the original 18 multiplied by 4 years of high school will result in 9 graduates. In the year of 1924. eighteen students entered Leesburg High School. In addition to the nine who graduate there were: Ruth Replogle, Fred- erick Vanator, Carl Kilmer, Paul McKibben, Ernest Dye. Olive Murphy. Mildred Gay, Bemis Stookey, and Esther Bricker. This will equal our number to start. During that year Olive Murphy and Ernest Dye can- celed out. The rest carried over into the next year. VVhen we returned we were minus Paul McKibben, but Margaret Cremeen was added. During that year Carl Kilmer, and Mildred Gay canceled out and Ruth Replogle was subtracted. Pass over another summer and We begin our Junior year. This time minus Margaret Cremeen and Fred Vanator: but plus Harold Men- dell and Charles Miller. Subtract Harold Mendell at Christmas, and that iinishes the year. In 1927 nine students entered Leesburg High School as seniors. These were the ones who had carried over from the Junior year. We were minus Bemis Stookey. Esther Bricker, and Charles Miller. The mathematics problem is ended: we have our answer: nine graduates. MARJORY MEEK. 'Qs l':u:n- S I L.H.S. RAVELINGS 1928 Aurtinn Swain N April 20, 1928. the Seniors of Leesburg High School had an Auc- tion Sale with Mr. Leroy Austin as auctioneer. The following ar- ticles We1'e sold to the highest bidder. Roland Ferverda's popularity went to Robert Shroyer for the fabul- ous sum of 25c. Alva Klopenstine sold his right-of-way to the Leesburg-Nappanee road to Arthur Anglin for 31.39. Joy Dausman's cute ways went to VVilma Rowe for the sum of 490. There was hot competition for the position of business manager of the annual, which position Ernest Parks holds. It was iinally sold to Everette Bortan for the unheard of sum of 34.98. Edna Blighton put up her goo-goo eyes, and as the bidding was very enthusiastic Juanita Brookins bought them for two for a nickle. Fred Himes sold his Hgirlish looks to Arthur Kinney for 31.18. Earl Stevens sold five inches of his height. Again there was much competition, this time between YVilliam Rathbun and Merritt Rookstool. It was finally knocked down to William Rathbun for 25c an inch. Ruth Bridenthrall's ability to have either straight or curly hair, wen to Esther J. McHibben. It brought 150. Marjory Meek sold her Ford Coupe to Wilbur Haney with the un- derstanding that he was to bring Miss Yeager to school in it. He paid 31998. The Junior Class bought the Senior amiability and class harmony. The ability of the Seniors to drive Miss Yeager wild in Bookkeeping went to the Sophomores for 39.85. The entire school went together and purchased the dignity of the Seniors. The said dignity was then presented to the Junior Class with due formality, The proceeds of the sale was used to build a tennis court on the school grounds for the use of the future students of L. H. The Freshmen staged a clever comeback in which they diagnosed the ills of the Presi- dent of the Senior Class. This was much enjoyed by all. The latter part of the evening was spent in playing party games and singing. The Freshmen reported a good time. A party was held in the High School Assembly on Valentine Eve as a result of the contest between the Alpha and Philodelphian Literary Societies. The Alpha Society entertained. The room was prettily decorated in the customary colors, red and white. After refreshments were served the committee took over the affair and kept the guests de- lightfully entertained. illvrrpiinn HE annual Junior-Senior Reception was held at Elkhart April 7. A T delicious four course dinner was served at the Hotel Elkhart. Toasts, music by Mrs. Milburn and Roland Ferverda and a Junior- Senior girls quartette was enjoyed between courses. RAVELINGS 1928 Alpha Biitrrarg Svnrietg URING the school year of 1923-24, the Alpha Literary Society was formed for the entertainment and enjoyment of the boys of L. H. S. At the same time the Philodelphian Society was formed for the girls. These societies met the last hour of the day. Every one was considered a member and was obliged to attend the meetings. Many enjoyable programs were given, consisting mostly of talks and music by the members. These programs were continued the following year. The year 1925-26 saw several changes in faculty and Mr. Curtis, our new principal thought wise to discontinue the programs and their loss was felt keenly by most of the students. This year the societies were re-organized, though with several changes. The two societies were composed of the members of the stu- dent body, both boys and girls. After all the students had been chosen by the two appointed, the societies had their meetings to organize. The Alpha Society chose the following officers: President, Vice-Pres- ident, Treasurer, Sponsor, Critic. Seargent-at-arms, and Secretary. The Alpha Society was to meet the third Friday of every month and give it's program in the presence of the whole school. On February 10th, the Alpha Society gave a party in honor of the Philodephian Society, which was enjoyed by the guests. WAYNE DECKARD, '2U. Iihiluhvlphian iiiitvrarg Svnrietg E were all pleasantly surprised one morning when Mr. Austin an- nounced that we would re-organize the Literary Societies. He appointed two to choose sides for the division of the student body into two groups. Our group then chose it's officers, which were to be re- elected every six weeks. Our society then chose the name Philodel- phianf' We retained the motto, colors, and flower of the former so- ciety, which were, Be square the whole world round,', Brown and Gold, and the Chrysanthemum, respectively. The two societies were to give their programs alternately every two weeks. Mr. Austin, Mrs. Milburn and Mr. Harman were to judge the programs and the so- ciety adjudged as having had the best, was to be entertained by the other society at the end of each semester. With a goal in view, we all determined to do our best to make the programs a success. MAE STOOKEY, '29. Pause Thirty- H. S. RAVELINGS 1928 w- - ,, in .4 l jf ,Y A kr rg W - '- 1 .
