With nineteen years ex- perience, Mr. Brockman provides the incen- tive to continue looking for a better way. Changes are being made for the conversion to the 2+2 plan. Responsibilities are shifted as Mr. Brockman becomes administrator of both schools and Mr. Diekmann takes over as head of the upper two grades. Mr. Hicklin, who has served as Vice-Principal, prefers to return to his main interests - classroom teaching and footbali coaching. Onto these shoulders fall many responsibilities, Mr. Diekmann. X. Superintendent's Office Hub Of R VII School District The supervision of the entire school district is the responsibility of two men, Dr. Bernard Campbell, Superintendent, and Dr. J. Underwood, Assistant Superintendent. It is up to these men to oversee the actions of the Board of Education, to make plans for the placement of students new in the community, to guide the development of the new schools, and to act as consultants in the quest for better education. Their job is to see that quality education continues in the R-7 school district. With this responsibility they plan for the future accommodations of students in the Lee's Summit area. The school district passed a bond issue on January 23, 1973. This bond insures the completion of the new elementary school in the northeast part of the city and the completion of Pleasant Lea Junior High. lt will also appropriate funds for the conversion to the 2+2 plan at the high school. David Gardner Again under the direction of Mrs. Warren, a play was presented in the spring of 1973. 11O In The Shade or The Flainmaker was the musical presented on April 13th and April 14th. The play centered around Lizzie Curry who thought she was plain and ordinary. Her brother, Noah Curry, rein- forced this thought although H. C. Curry, her father tried to dispell it. Then the Flainmaker, Starbuck, showed up in town. He convinced all the other people except Lizzie that he could make it rain. Trying to con- vince Lizzie he could make it rain, they fell in love. At the same time she fell for the Sheriff File. Both of the involved men asked her to marry him at the same time. Choosing between the two, Lizzie picked File. As the play ended, it began to stormg for the first time in his life Starbuck had made it rain. The audiences greatly enjoyed both productions of the 1973 school year. The students, in addition to having fun producing these plays learned a great deal about behind-the-scenes activities. Broadway and New York - look out! lil? The Dlay dealt with the problems in the recovery of the domineering radio figure of Sheridan Whiteside. After falling on a patch of ice he was confined in the house of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley until he could walk out. During The Man Who Came To Dinner ' the course of his recovery his secretary, Maggie Cutler, fell for a newspaper man, Bert Jefferson. So as not to lose Maggie, Whiteside called in the starlet Lorraine Sheldon to take Bert's mind off Maggie. Beverly Carlton dropped in to visit and almost succeeded in breaking up Lorraine and Bert. Whiteside saw the error in his way and finally allowed Maggie to leave to marry Bert. The students that participated in theproduction of this play worked hard to produce this lively comedy. Under the direction of Mrs. Warren the students put in long hours of rehearsal and should be congratulated for a fine production. Jerry Reeves and Patty Cook led the march. Saturday in the Park Saturday in the Park , the theme of the prom this year, gave forth a relaxed, park-at-twilight at- mosphere. Hard work and late hours by a handful of Juniors and their sponsors made Prom a tremendous success, with over 200 couples attending. Decorations were centered around the pastels of yellow, blue, and pink. Colorful hand-drawn murals depicting a picnic scene, the band, an ice cream parlor, and young love covered the walls like a delicate icing. The center attraction, located in the middle of the floor, was a bridge over dual wishing ponds. Brick sidewalks divided a grassy area from bark surrounding the ponds. A quaint, white picket fence went around all of this center park area. The dance floor was sectioned off by a creative bit of im- agination - trees, with pink and white blossoms. Positioned on a gazebo was the band, Spirit of Charisma. The band was excellent, and kept this 1973 crowd jiving into the night. Our greatest win was against Excelsior Springs with 44-0. Coach Hicklin was very proud of the team at Conference too. Bob Hertzog made All- Conference offensive first team as a guard and is the first person from Lee's Summit to make this since 1966. Steve Oberweather made All- Conference first team offense as a back, also. Coach Hicklen advises Kent Shipley and Kirk Diekmann. Steve Oberweather breaks away with Sobek to right. Under the direction of Coach Tom Hewitt, the Varsity showed great improvement in both technique and strategy. With four of the starting five to return for the 1974 season, the constructive program of 1973 should yield success. Backing the Varsity are the Junior Varsity and Sophomore teams. With this group coming on strong under the direction of Coaches Ed Matuszak and Jim Jenkins, the Tigers showed great growth in a very demanding basketball season. Coaches Matuszak and Hewitt await the results of their team's effort. 5 Msg fi u QL W Sill' Qflflt, K Q' Q 1 ' 5 X J? . Brad Hawthorne set a new school record with a time of 9:42 for the two mile course and was the third place finisher in the State Meet. Rick Dennison, who finished ninth in the State Meet, and John Sievers also bettered the old record with times of 9:55 and 10:04 respectively. This team is definitely the best that Row has come out of the Greater Kansas City, Missouri, area for many years. The Junior Varsity also had an outstanding record, going undefeated for the season. Amateur Radio Club Several boys at LSHS who have a common in- terest in radios and their operation formed the Amateur Radio Club this year. President of the club is John Moore, and Vice-President is Jim Linnenbrink. This year, members of the club went to the Federal Building in Kansas City and received their third-class radio-telephone operators license. They also installed an antennae on top of the school for their use in listening and learning about radios. The members learned Morse Code and used it in their meetings to communicate over short-wave and ham radios. The main purpose of this club is to give these boys the ability to operate radios and to give them the pleasure of having a hobby that is very en- joyable and interesting. National Forensic League This year's National Forensic League consisted of approximately 35 active members. Dave McDowell was their president, with Joan Bennett as secretary. Their sponsor was Mr. Flanagan. The NFL consists of all the students that participate in tournaments. These tournaments consist of debate, extemporaneous speaking, original oratory, dramatic interpretation, humorous interpretation, duet acting, prose and poetry and radio speaking. To become a member, the student must gain 25 points in tournament competi- tion. The higher one places, the more points they get. As the student gains points he becomes eligible for four different awards. These consist of seals in Merit, Honor, Excellence, and Distinction. Lee's Summit has had an NFL for 12 years, but it just became chartered two years ago. This speech society participated in tournaments every weekend, with about 50 schools in the state. This year, L.S. plac- ed second in conference, and third out of 125 schools at Marshall. They also placed second in Monett out of 50 schools. Graduation is a time when everyone begins to think of college, jobs, and the future, and have to prepare to face problems they never thought existed. But no matter how hard or easy their lives turn out, there is always the memory of the last years at high school. The 1972-1973 season has been a stepping stone to maturity and has changed many people for the better. The Seniors of '73 and those who follow owe a great deal to the excellent teachers and ad- ministrators of Lee's Summit. The biggest event was Prom, with the theme Pieces of April. Everyone in the Junior class pitched in to make Prom a big success. The Tiger Spirit came out with a loud roar at Homecoming, too, taking first in the float competition and donating the most to the Spirit Jug. The Juniors athletic achievements were very good this year in football, basketball, track and wrestling. All in all the 72-73 activities kept everyone on the move. The change from a superior position in ninth grade to a subor- dinate level in high school was a lesson in humility itself. As the year progressed, however, the advantages offered became more apparent as did the responsibilities that accompanied them. The sophomore year was a year of growthg a time to take a personal assessment and adjust before entering the final high school years.
