Administrators Lead and Guide The administration of a high school is one of the most important, yet one of the hardest jobs in any community. The shaping of young people's minds is at stake-tomorrow's leaders are formed in three short years of high school. Mr. Brockman has been principal of L.S.H.S. for 18 years and has established growing, forward looking-programs through which students are prepared for the ' adult world. With the help of Mr. Diekmann and Nlr. Hicklin, the leaders and builders of tomorrow have an excellent chance of making a success out of the knowledge and a plication of this knowledge that D they have gained during their high school years. 3 f gn! New Courses Taught in English Department For the past three years, the English department has successfully worked out an elective program of English courses that runs on a semester basis. The only required course is Composition l for sophomores. There were two new subjects offered this year: Individualized Reading for seniors, and Thinking Through Literature. The main objectives of the English program are to help students appreciate good literature, to help students understand life in its personal, social, and aesthetic phases, and to help students respect an author's right to express opinions different from their own. Each school day the cafeteria personnel must prepare a hot meal for approximately 1800 students. A few visible changes were made this year. In January, plastic psychedelic trays replaced the old brown ones used previously. Also, slogans such as Be A Smarty, Eat Hearty were printed on nap- kins in various colors to put more variety into the daily lunch routine. To work and receive recognition for doing some- thing worthwhile should be the goal of every person this year. l The senior year is also a time of change- S ' changing from an adolescent to an adult. Thus, high school becomes the battleground for that ' ' 1 change. This change can be realized in both sports and academics. Juniors-Class of 73 Another year has come and gone: now not sophomores but juniors soon to be mighty seniors. The year had its ups and downs, such as placing first in Courtwarming Hairy Leg Contest, and last in float competition at Homecoming. Getting class rings was, and always will be, a great time for juniors-a time to remember. Last minute preparations and hassle was universal in arranging a class schedule for the 1973 school year. They are expected to be young adults and act accordingly. A certain amount of adjustment must be made to take on the responsibility of someday becoming seniors, but all is taken in stride. The class of '74 already has the poten- tial of leadership and community worth. Their high school careers shall E challenge, change, and adopt various aspects of extracurricular activities as well as regular student studies, to make each life enriched and more knowledgeable. Each year, the Pep Club sophomore girls are initiated during Homecoming Week. ln the Homecoming float com- petition, the sophomores took second. In the Spirit Week hall competition, the sophomores won third place. ss C 4 1 30Dhomore class officers: Flow 1: Karen ThomaS,treasurerg Mark Hencey, president, Jo Ellen Reed, secretary, Terri Higgins, vice-president. Coming on strong with a 27-0 win against Smith-Cotton, Homecoming Week was about to come to a close, all but ending the memories of six days past. In the 17th annual Homecoming Parade, the L.S. Announced at half time was the Homecoming Queen, Sherry Maxwell, and float contest winners, namely, seniors first, sophomores second, juniors third, and DECA placing first in the novelty class. Damn Yankees was the dramatic story of an avid Washington Senator fan, Joe Hardy, who was tempted by Mr. Applegate tthe devill, and signed his soul away to play on the Sena- tors' team for the remainder of the season in hopes of capturing the pennant from the defending New York Yankees. While Joe prepares to meet the Yankees in the series game, an enchanting seductress, Lola, tries to charm Joe to death. The stories and fables surrounding the Arabian Nights started about 400 years ago in the Persian Empire, but the night of April 22 was a night to behold. Two sword-bearing genies guarded the en- tranceway to Prom-giving a magnificent view of the dance floor and side tables. The dance floor was decorated with red crepe paper gathered around a pole, and draped in all directions to form a tent- shaped ceiling. Aladdin-lamp candles lighted each table in soft candlelight. Here couples came to tell stories as Scheherazade did centuries ago, or to gather in the beauty of the evening. Next to the patio doors stood a silver fountain surrounded with an array of ferns, green plants, and several benches. This scenery led to the patio where the couples could be out in the open and gaze at the ageless stars. Bm Middleton and Brenda Herrington pass the two genies to the Prom excitement. The purpose of Pep Club is to attend athletic competitions and to support the teammates with their spirit, cheers, and enthusiasm. Pep rallies are held the afternoon before home games in an effort to rally the students and community to sup- port the athletic events. Sophomore initiation, a major event in the club's year, takes place during Homecoming Week. Beanies, posters assigned by the seniors, and walking in the Homecoming Parade in ridiculous costumes, all constitute the initiation. An annual banquet is held in lVlay to honor the senior members who are leaving. Nancy Alley is spirit in force. Masque and Gavel Talent and Tribulations As the Masque and Gavel Club reflects on the past year, the members will think of many satisfying mo- ments. First was the children's play, Sing Ho For A Prince! or Sleeping Beauty, presented October 15 and 17. The cast will remember the time spent working on costumes, construction, as well as, work- ing on the production part of the play. However, they realized the time and effort was well spent when they saw the many happy faces of the children watch- ing the play. The club sold tickets for the all-school musical, Damn Yankees, in November. Several Masque and Gavel members were selected to be in the cast. The club went on a field trip to see one of its members, Johnny Johnston, performing in a Roanoke Community Center production of The Fantastic's. Much time was spent in room 144 at 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoons. President Kathy McCoy pre- sided over the meetings, with Patty Thompson, sec- retary-treasurer, taking minutes and handling finan- ces. In the spring, Masque and Gavel planned the first Speech and Drama Awards Banquet. The club is hoping to make this an annual event. The awards were given to the most deserving speech and drama students who have done outstanding work during the school year. - pw xmlS5.w.k Q S S Jolinda really hits the funny bone! i l M! The Homecoming float-The Little Red Schoolhouse-tied for second place in the novelty division. Five students went to the state FTA meeting at Colum- bia and learned about FTA chapters across Missouri. At Christmas time, members visited the boys at Drumm Farm. They sang Christmas carols, decorated a tree, and had refreshments. Later in the year, FTA gave a program about teaching. Next came the L.S.E.A. Scholarship dinner, where everyone helped the teachers do their jobs. When the weather warmed up, Future Teachers members were busy with bake sales and outdoor activities. All through the year the calendar was dotted with meetings after school, where differ- ent aspects of teaching were discussed. FTA members were busy year long learning about teaching children, and themselves. Techniques Learned by Teachers of The annual Scholarship Dinner, sponsored by the Lee's Summit Education Association QLSEAQ of the Lee's Summit R-7 school district was held on Saturday, February 26, 1972, in the fieldhouse cafeteria. This dinner is held each year to provide a 31,300 scholarship, over a four-year period, to a worthy senior who plans to enter the teach- ing profession. Teachers and administrators all pitch in selling tickets and working at some task of serving or cleaning up of the dinner. Entertainment for the night was provided by Vance Fiiffie and the Summit Singers. Jim Bell provided organ background music.
