SECRETARIES KEEP THE SCHOOL RUNNING SNIOOTHLY AND EFFICIENTLY With the guidance of the LSHS secretaries, the school was kept running in an orderly manner. Mrs. Marcia Miller served as secretary to Mr. Brockman which kept her constantly occupied. ln addition to this schedule, she handled all the money deposited by various school organizations and regulated all supplies for teachers. Assisting Mr. Diekmann was Mrs. Gail Guffey. Among her many duties were the local and state attendance records, daily announce- ments, and typing necessary papers requested by teachers and Mr. Diekmann. Mrs. Mary Gibson, Guidance Office secretary, made appointments for the counselors and also kept each student's record of grades and activities in her file of transcripts. Both teachers and students were enthusiastic with Ns!! f as XX X K XX Y Q Mrs. loyce Stevenson the results and made plans to continue the new methods next year. Throughout the English Department the emphasis was on litera- ture and composition, while attention to grammar was minor. Small groups worked together tor oral reports on the classics. With the ad- dition ot individual books, each student's understanding was increased. The students worked toward clear and concise writing, by cre- ating one theme weekly. The ultimate goal of juniors and seniors was the completion ot a six page theme paper. The necessity tor research aided the students library skills besides increasing their knowledge ot literature. The language departments goal was to increase each student's under- standing and compassion for people in other lands. The daily use ot serial iilmstrips in both the Spanish and French classes provided interesting and authentic background material for students. Complete headsets andrecording note hooks aided individ- ual pronounciation while games and songs encourage class participa- tion. l Mrs. Charolette Jacobs Mrs. Judy Gillespie Historical slides of various monuments and landmarks were shovvn along with tamous works ot art and great statesmen. The fourth year classes read the works ol classical French and Spanish authors, playvvrights, and poets. Through diligence and hard work, students learn to speak the language. But perhaps more important, the students learned to under- stand another culture. Several changes took place in the Fine Arts department this year, including an increase in art classes and a decrease in music courses. lVlr. Hughes and lVlrs. Hardy headed the art staff. A new pot- ter's wheel and new press and storage facilities for slides were obtained for future use. The sophomore enrollment boosted the number of Art students, including a large number of very talented students. Sculpturing, lettering, charcoal and lndia ink sketches, col- lages, and water coloring were several fields undertaken by art students. For the first time, the number of boys and girls in the choir was evenly balanced according to lVlr. Riffie. However, the group was much smaller being 213 the size as usual. Also smaller than before, was the new girls Glee Club. A new group was formed that met after school. Students could take this course for credit. The select group of choir members known as the Summit Singers was also smaller this year. This group of students were constantly in demand for various club and organization perfor- mances. The LSHS Concert Band had another successful year under the direction of lVlr. Keith House and lVlr. Richard Jorgensen. De- spite a smaller membership, the band maintained its title as one ofthe outstanding musical groups in the state. Mr. Wayne Hughes , Govvpnmw 1 W 1 , 7 X ffff s sy X f I Mrs Martha Fortner MTS June HHVVWV The Home Economics classes had widely selective projects this year. The advanced clothing classes attempted the more difficult dress patterns and suits with stress put on the sewing techniques learned from previous years. Interior decorating classes made a survey of the teachers lounge and proceeded with making new plans for redecorating it. Along with this project the girls were to select furniture, pictures and other fur- nishings which would flatter the room. The food classes tried something new this year. For the first time they visited various food markets and compared the processing of foods. After select- ing a store the fust hour class did the food buying fortherestofthefoodidasses The girls learned the proper methods of setting a table for formal dinners. They then proceeded to pre- pare and serve them. Mrs. Martha Fortner and Mrs. loyce Havner in- structed the various departments in Home Economics. Clothing lll, an additional course in home econom- ics, was taught by Mrs. Fortner. Basic drafting taught by lVlr. Harold Parker was taken by both girls and boys. The purpose of such a class is to introduce students to the basic skills of mechanical drawing. In addition to basic drafting, llllr. Parker also taught technical design as a vocational two hour course. Fundamentally the course was designed to instruct students in the drawing of intricate mechanical objects. lVlr. James Van Blarcum taught basic electricity courses with one electricity course. Many of his students worked during the year taping television shows on video tape. The benefit of such work was put to the test when classes viewed the programs as educational films. Woodworking classes were taught by lVlr. Larry Apprill and lVlr. Thurman Stone. ln this class the students learned the proper use of hand tools, and developed skills and good safety habits. General metals was taught by lVlr. Ross Littrell. The various as- pects of metal working such as sheet, wrought, bench, and art metal are included in this class. These classes provided excellent opportunity to learn those processes found in industry. Competition between the upperclassmen and sophomores in vari- ous sports was encouraged along with team teaching in basketball. New textbooks were issued to each girl in hopes that the rules and objects of the games could be better understood. ln accordance with the skills learned from previous years all girls took the President's Physical Fitness Program. New school records were set and over one hundred girls received the award. The girl's physical education was staffed by Miss Diane Black, Mrs. Charlene Boyer and Miss Claudia Yake. The changing did not end here, but many new sports were to make their appearance. These sports ranged from bowling and table tennis in the winter months to archery and tennis in the spring months. The appearance for the first time of a textbook brought about mixed emotion and thoroughly ended the old type of physical education in Lee's Summit. ,!Vlr. Wayne Parker was the director and co-ordinator of the entire physical education program this year. lVlr. Slaughter believes in learning by doing. This gave the stu- dent an intimate knowledge of nature and her operations through di' rect contact with organisms. Chemistry was changed with the assignment ot a new book which featured new laboratory exercises and used the discovery method to help students learn more about the elements. Video tape teaching was used a second year by Nlrs. Van Hook to improve teaching in the physics courses. Advanced Physics stu- dents chose the area in which they wanted to study. This was a much more individual study course, very close to college type classes. Overhead projectors and screens were used extensively in the math classes this year. These helped students obtain a clearer pic- ture of mathematical procedure. lVlr. Palmer, llllr. Titus, and lVlr. Hick- Iin shared geometry and algebra responsibilities. Sylvie Valette was the foreign exchange student to Lee's Summit this year. She lives in Crosne, France, but was born in Saigon, South Vietnam. She arrived in the United States in Au- gust, and after spending two days in New York, she flew on to St. Louis, eventually arriving at her destination, Lee's Summit. She stayed with Carol Bird and her family forayear: School in America proved to be very different from school in France for Sylvie. She found the Pep Club, Drill Team, Cheer- leaders, and even school spirit to be new experiences. Our system of choosing electives made a favorable impression on Sylvie. Our gym suits were the funniest thing Sylvie saw, since in France they wear shorts and a shirt instead. She felt she would miss everything except giving speeches. This was ,clearly shown to be a success when teachers worked hand and broom with the students for assemblies. Through the efforts of the entire LSHS student body, several new spirited activities were added to the third an- nual courtwarming. Spirit week was initiated on Monday with nominations for the Ugly lVlan and Hairy Leg contest during lunch periods. Each class also began purchasing penny links in the race for the longest spirit chain. Tuesday was the long-awaited Clash Day . lVlost hideous color combina- tions and all types and varieties of clothing were displayed by all students, making this a most successful event. During an assembly seminar on Wednesday, the queen candidates, ludy Clingenpeel, Karen Conde, Shawn Dwyer, Tina llflctluiston, and Barb Schwartz were introduced. A short pep assembly was also presented by the cheerleaders. Climaxing this assembly was also the introduction of the candidates for the Ugly lVlan and Hairy Leg contests. Wednesday also marked the day for hall decorations. Each class was given a hall of the school to decorate in any chosen manner. This was another close race between the classes, to be determined by a vote of the faculty. lVlasque and Gavel presented a very funny take-off from the ever popular Laugh-lnl', called Lunch-ln . This was an- other assembly seminar program, adding to the already large list of Courtwarming activities. A spirited pep assembly was held on Friday afternoon in the field house. Winners of various contests were announced. Tom Shirck was the overwhelming choice for the Hairy Leg Contest with Robert Moulton receiving honors for the Ugly Man. The spirited sophomore class grasped the Spirit Chain contest while the juniors, not to be outdone, took the Hall decorations contest. However the class of '69 with undaunt- ed enthusiasm received the Spirit stick for the weeks activities. Spirit week was definitely a welcome addition to Court, warming and an activity enjoyed by all. FOR ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR Enthusiastic, eager, and energetic are the perfect descriptive words for the '68-'69 Pep Club. Sheila Williams, lo Swezy, Cindy An- thony, Barb Schwartz, and loy Swezy provided the skillful leadership necessary for directing this large group of over 250 girls. The first big event of the year was the traditional initiation of sophomore and new Pep Club members by revengeful and ruthless se- niors. The Christmas holiday season found the members visiting the Hilltop Girls' Home and cheering the less fortunate. Pep Club girls provided decorations for each tournament held at L.S. and exhibited their undaunted spirit by never failing to banner the halls for weekly games. The climax of this busy schedule was the annual spring banquet at which time the new officers and cheerleaders were installed for the upcoming year. 'lllv-N' FOR ONE BRIEF SHINING IVIOIVIENTH PROIVI-1969 Noel Brumble and date, loy Brown, relax and enjoy the atmo- sphere of Camelot Stan Morrison and Linda Carnes lead the traditional Grand March before the Prom. ln an atmosphere of royal setting, the annual lunior-Senior Prom was held on April 26. Camelot was a theme to be remembered by all. Month long preparations by the juniors made the year's main social event highly successful. The school cafeteria was transformed into a medieval castle. A drawbridge led students and their guests into the majestic room. Tapestries, a mural, shields and swords created an authentic appearance while candle- light, miniature castle table decorations and stone walls added even more. The traditional parade was held in the fieldhouse before the actual Prom began. Here proud parents reminisced and photographed students and their dates. After Prom, kids dined at their favorite restaurants. Among the most popular restaurants were the Plaza lll, the Buttonwood Tree, and the Four Winds at the municipal airport. Following dinner, several aftereparties were held by various individuals. Many enjoyed this different pace of a relaxed, casual atmosphere. Climaxing the day-long night were breakfasts also held by various students. Even the most dreary-eyed had a memorable experience. The most adventurous couples attended Sunday services at their selected churches. Picnics held on Sunday afternoon also attracted many kids. However, most slept the day away in order to appear bright-eyed Monday morning in lst hour classes. The 1969 Prom was well-attended and will be remembered by all those connected with it. Q 9' it - 1 51 ,za m v VICTURY Victory was the word throughout the 1968 season as the Tigers carried through to a 9-1 season and the Suburban Seven Champion- ship. The winning attitude which the Tigers developed was evident early in the season as the Tigers won their first game 31 to 0 over the Ruskin Eagles, a team which had beaten the Tigers the last two years. The Tigers continued to make headlines and move upward in the area ratings. Their next major obstacle was the Liberty Blueiays who were also rated in the top ten. This game was a championship game as far as the Tigers were concerned, because the Biueiays had de' feated the Grandview Bulldogs the week before. The Tigers pulled through with a 7 to 0 win. This left the Tigers favorites to win the conference title. The Tigers did not stop here, but continued to make known the name of Lee's Summit throughout the state of lVlissouri. The height of the season was the Grandview-Lee's Summit cham- pionship game. A loss for the Tigers would result in a three-way tie for the crown, a win or tie would give the crown to the Tigers. The pride and tradition the Tigers now possessed was displayed when Lee's Summit took home the first Suburban Seven crown with a 19 to 14 win over the Bulldogs. Several of the Tigers were named to the Conference team, They were Greg Lang, Don Land, Russ Webber, Larry Theiss, Bruce Poten, lim West, Bill Avise, Dean Pettyjohn, and Allen Spaur. l 101 , . .'.. The team led by Coach Lyle Jones had a three and five conference record. Their conference was made up of the Suburban Seven and the Suburban Eight. The tennis team was unique because girls participated in scheduled matches with other schools, although they were not officially on the tennis team. Phil Humphrey captained the team and Dave Martin carried the number one spot. Following him were Craig Stevick, Phil Humphrey, Gary Pycior, and Randy Redpath. Dere Newman, Diane Ray, Ricky Braynt, and Melanie Copple were among the girls who participated in the girI's program. Before the season began two exhibition matches were held with schools outside the conference and the netmen displayed a little of what was to be seen of a much improved season. The team participated in the North Kansas City Tournament and District matches but failed to win a top position after several long battles. The outlook for next year is bright because of the many promis- ing underclassmen. They will be led by returning varsity seniors, Randy Redpath and Gary Pycior. W SKILL, IIVIPROVEIVIENT, DETERIVIINATION, CHARACTERISTICS CF L.S. GOLFERS Coach Bill Brobst's golf team made an improved showing in the Kansas City area. The golfers finished ninth in the conference tournament and fifteenth in the district tourna- ment. Don Olson played the number one man all season. Don had the best score in all team matches except one. He also lead his team as captain. Ron Williams and Mark lVlcClellan usually played number one and number two man. The fourth man alternated amoung lVlat Englebrake, Alan Lane and Bill Hancock. With a majority of under classmen the golf teams future is very bright. Nikk Thompson and Bruce Poland were the first three year letter- men in the sport. Richard Lee, Curtis Clayton and Ralph Hammand were a few of the other great assets. Gene Burgess and Bruce Poland captained their team to a 5 win and 10 loss conference record. Coach Roberts and his team battled all their opponents hard. The team lost 7 out of its 10 losses by just one point. lf three or four more hits could have occured the overall team record might have been much better. The teams progress was indicated by the very good hitting. Bruce Poland, Nikk Thompson and Richard Lee lead the team in that order. The Tigers also had very fine pitching in Ken Greene, lim lVlc- Gee, Dave Cross, and Danny Cox. The latter two being very fine prospects for next year. Baseballs future at Lee's Summit seems very bright with so much potential. aphids.
