History Club The focus of the Clio Society is on local history. This year several speakers have visited our meetings. Among these are John Foster West, novelist and poet, Dr. Patricia Beaver, anthropologist. Dr. Margaret Fletcher, expert on oral history, and Dr. Carl Ross speaking on the history of Appalachia. We have also seen films dealing with the problems of Appalachia such as In Memory of the Land and People , which deals with strip mining, and Harlan County U.S. A , a documentary about the miners strike in Kentucky. Dr. Ted Ledford showed his film presentation Smokey Mountain Memories and discussed his present film about changing traditions in Appalachia.
