RESUME UE THE '45 SEASI1 On September 21, l945 Leeds Green Wave met their traditional rivals, the Red and Black Moun- taineers of Shades Cahaba in the first football classic of the season. Although the boys had prac- ticed early and late. Shades Cahaba's power was too much, and they fell by the score of 35 to l2. Beaten but undaunted, they prepped hard for their first game on home territory with the Mutes from Talladega. On September 28, when the final whistle blew, Smith had covered himself in glory by hitting pay dirt for two scores. Goss and Bailey shared the limelight with one score each. The Mutes fell by a score of 26 to 0. The Green Wave was rolling high when it trav- eled to meet the highly touted Gophers of Huey- town on October 5. The game was not as uneven as the score indicated. Slowed by the slippery turf, and their passing game hampered by a wet ball, the Green Wave went down in the mud 59 to 0. Another home game was played on October l2 when a muchly underrated Parrish High from Walker County met the boys in the green and white. The scoring punch of both teams was not working. due to the brilliant defensive play of the two lines. Parrish High threw several scares into Leeds followers but each time Leeds' great center, Cecil Davis, came into his own and saved the day. So a fighting Leeds eleven was held to a 0-to-0 tie. With spirit still high, the Green Wave travelled to South Alabama to meet one of the best teams in the State, Parrish High of Selma. The night was indeed black for Leeds. Smothered by a score of 45 to 0, the boys, led bv Captain Tom Lambert, played their best game of the season but could not hold out against fresh reserves Selma kept throw- ing into the game. On October 26, Leeds won its second game of the season when it downed Minor 7 to 6. The highlight of the game was when Nub Smith, Leeds' fullback, galloped 99 yards for the score. The following week, Leeds travelled to Talla- dega to play against the strong Talladega High School team. Cheered by the loyal Leeds fans who accompanied the team, the Green Wave played a hard-fought game but was overrun 28 to 0. On November 9, Leeds went a short distance to be beaten by a large score. Fairfield Tigers clawed their way through a fighting Leeds line, led by jack Laster, who refused to be denied their victory. When the whistle blew Leeds was on the short end of a 59 to O score. The homecoming game was the last and most important .The Green Wave rolled to a tremend- ous victory over their rival of rivals, Pell City Panthers. Led by Gerald Kincaid, the best little scat-back to play at Leeds in many years, the Green Wave finished a season made successful by their victory over Pell City, 25 to 7. Thus ended the saga of the great sport of football of I9-15. ,fy Bw V-a, Q. N r TOM LAMBERT Caplain I 945 ' P GERALD KINCAID Co-Captain 1945 CECIL DAVIS Center Blu. It was built in 1842 and consisted of only one room. The first teacher was Mr. john Dickey and a list of rules which he wrote is now owned by Mr. jack Hurst. Some of these rigid rules are: I shall not thrash, flog, or hit anyone or draw blood intentionally from any student. I shall teach reading, writing, arithmetic, spelling, geography and the English language. The teacher's salary was GOI mentioned. As Leeds began to grow, it became necessary to move the school. It was then that the school down the valley was built. This was the school that so many of our citi- zens attended. Mrs. Clara George was voted the Most Popular Girl while a student there. Professor Headley was loved by all and his one rule was, Do right! The well was just as popular then as the fountain is today. The gleam of radiance which glows in everyones eyes when this school is mentioned reveals the fact that their memories are sweet and worth remembering! The present school was built in the summer of 1911 under the leadership of the Mayor, Dr. H. T. Caffee. The building cost l510,000. The population of Leeds, which was about 1,400, worked together to build this institution. In September of 1911, it was a happy town that met a proud faculty in the auditorium of the modern new brick building to pledge their cooperation and to give thanks for making it possible for the small town of Leeds to erect such a building as had been constructed. In the future, if the plans are carried out to build a new high school, thisfrlma mater will take its place in the history of Leeds Schools. The Ualleq School l S is I Mas. T. B. He can truly be called The Mr. Chips of Leeds Schools. The memory of his kindness, easy-going manner and fine christian character will live in the hearts of. the people of Leeds forever. Mr. Crump graduated at Peabody College, Nashville, Tennessee in june, 1885. He taught in various schools in Alabama before coming to Leeds School located on the valley road. After reaching there three years, he went to Texas, returning to Leeds in 1927. He taught in the building which is now the elementary school. Here, in our town, he finished his teaching career which he loved so dearly. He had taught 55 years. He died March 24, 1936, but he will never be forgotten by ones who knew him. ZeedA School in l9II ..... 2 '? i 4 ,. A 1 1 This picture illustrates the way our school looked in 1911, when it was completed. This building now serves as the elementary school. The school was built in the summer of 1911 and was the result of much hard work by the citizens of Leeds. The cost of the building was 310,000 which was raised by bonds. As the population of Leeds grew, annexes were added to the main building and finally, the present high school was built. The first graduates of this school were three young men. Mrs. Ellenburg organized the first Parent-Teacher Association in Leeds. Her husband taught in Leeds school four years, during which time the annexes were made to the original building. The P.-T.
