To attain the best educational value for the students of Leechburg Union High School is the principal goal of these dedicated citizens who so unseliishly give up their free time. These men, who govern the school system with such elliciency, cer- tainly deserve much credit. Making decisions about problems which have arisen during the month and taking care ofthe regular routine business is only part of their job. The problems concerning the renovation of the school are an extra as- signment for these civic-minded directors to deal with. The past years have proved the success of these men. We wish them many more successful years of progress. We, the class of 1967, wish to sincerely express our appreciation. School cials Mr. James Cavelgia Replacing Mr. H. F. Rosen as supervising principal of the Leechburg Union School District is James Caveglia. Mr. Caveglia had been the L.U.H.S. Business Manager for the past three years. On June 27, 1966, Lau- ra left for the sunny South American country of Colombia, where she lived in Armenia, a city of 150,000 people, with Mr. and Mrs. Alejandro Arango. Also in her family were her two brothers-Alberto, 17, and Luis, 14, and her three sisters- Carmen Elisa, 10g Marta Lucia, 7, and Luz Helena, 5. Her father owns two coffee plantations and is known as a coffee kingf' During her stay, Laura visited the major cities of Colombia, in- cluding Bogota, the capital. Among the many sights which she saw were the Cathedral of Salt, the home of Simon Bolivar, and a world famous gold mu- seum. The Peace Corps volunteers and the colorful lives lead by the Co- lombeans along with their sin- cerity and kindness towards her will always be among Laura's fondest memories. Kathy Lynch On June 27, 1966, Kathy Lynch departed from Greater Pitts- burgh Airport in a small aircraft which took her to Lima, Peru, and a summer filled with fond memories and many unforgetta- ble experiences. Kathy will always remember the warmth and friendliness of her foster parents Mr. and Mrs. Ra- mon Castaneda, her eldest sister Elizabeth, 22, and the twins Ana and Elena, 19. Besides visiting the beautiful ca- thedrals and museums of Peru, she also traveled to Cuzco, Macchu-Picchu and the famous fair of Pisac. Being chased by robbers while at an Indian fair proved to be a unique experience. Kathy was impressed by the Peruvians and how well versed they were about the history, customs, and tradi- tions of their country. The Cum- bia and the Pompo were two of the popular South American dances she learned to do. She will always remember her first serenade. Kathy plans to return to Peru during the summer of 1968 to attend the wedding of Elizabeth, her eldest foster sister. Kathy Varano If Kathy should ever travel to China, she will be prepared for the trip. During her stay in Mirallores, Peru, this summer, her eldest South American sister, Dora, 21, who is part Chinese, taught her how to use chop- sticks. Kathy served an entire meal with them and also learned a few words and numbers in Chinese. Her foster parents this summer were Mr. and Mrs. Victor Vizquerra. Mr. Vizquerra is an agricultural engineer who owns two flower shops in which he grows his own orchids. Kathy's brother Jose, 16, and her three sisters-Dora, 21g Vicky, 17, and Maria, 135 all proved to be valu- able assets in teaching her more about the Spanish Language. Museums, cathedrals, Callao, the biggest seaport, Ancon, a large beach area: Cuzco, Macchu- Picchu, the famous Fair of Pisacg and Old and New Lima, the capital of Peru, were all interest- ing sites which she visited. Kathy will never forget mod- eling Chinese clothes from the Chinese Embassy when one of the regular girls couldn't come. We are sure that she was a su- perb envoy at all times. Foreign Exchange Students Marta Trillos On Thanksgiving Day Marta Eugenia Trillos, 17, arrived at the home of her American par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ob- erdorf of 1222 Edgewood Drive, West Leechburg. At lirst Marta spoke no English, but gradually she learned our language to the point where she didn't have too much trouble communicating with us and the Oberdorfs. Attending basketball games, going to Eat ln Park, shopping in our department stores, Christ- mas, parties, and slumber parties were all new experiences for Marta. Marta enjoyed seeing the Gold- en Triangle, Gateway Center, and didn't know what to think when she saw our first big snow- fall. Since she lives in the tropi- cal section of Colombia, Marta found it a little difficult to get used to our cold weather. Her smile, pleasing personality, and cheerfulness made Marta a welcome member of L.U.H.S. and gave all of us a good impression of Colombia. Hilda Torres Arriving just a few days after Christmas, Hilda Torres, 15, made her American home with Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Varano of Lincoln Avenue, Leechburg. Hilda, who lives in Lima, Peru, has a brother Ricardo, 14, and a sister Juliana, 9. Her father is a lawyer and he and her mother own a furniture factory. Hilda, who studied English for ten years prior to coming to Leechburg, had little trouble communicating with us. When she first arrived, Hilda told us that she first wanted to learn to speak English very well because her father had promised her a sports car if she could accom- plish this goal. We are sure Hilda will enjoy driving it! The 'Sound of Music , seeing the sights of Pittsburg, attending basketball games, and going to slumber parties were among her favorite activities in Leechburg. Hilda, an excellent dancer who plans to become a lawyer and later a diplomat, played her part well in promoting better interna- tional relations. A Iejandro Fuenzalida Friendly, gracious and debonair are all synonomous of our third foreign exchange student, Ale- jandro Fuenzalida, 18. He lives in Santiago, Chile, where his fa- ther is a textile technician. He has one sister, Miryam, 14, one brother, Mario, 16. During his stay here, Alejandro resided with Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Lange and family of 15 Highland Drive. Alejandro has many interesting hobbies, including photography and -stamp collecting. Dances, pizza parties, and jam sessions at the Langels were some of his new and enjoyable activities. Touring the University of Pitts- burgh, Washington, D.C., and seeing Bill Cosby at the Civic Arena are among his fondest memories of the U.S. and Leech- burg. We hope that he will always re- member us. We will always re- member him. Exchange Students Snaps 2- ,,:,..,. ,,:,.
