UN IOR AIORETTE The main ambition of the junior majorettes is to become a member of the senior unit, therefore they work very hard at learning the fundamentals of twirl- ing and marching. Under the supervision of the heads, Barbara Truffa, Hazel Swanson, and Christine Bonello, they have made rapid progress since the begin- ning of the school term. The results of their untiring efforts were first witnessed at the Halloween Parade. The girls really did a commendable job. Marching in the Memorial Day Parade was another big day in their lives. Diligence such as this group shows is bound to bring desired results. Theyill soon be leading the senior band onto the field for pre-game and halftime performances. 68 Several years ago a junior band was or- ganized, consisting of boys and girls from fourth to eighth grade, simply because their director. Mr. Allera, believes in starting music education early. These youngsters learn everything from reading music to the proper methods of breathing. You may hear them playing during school hours at one of their regular practice sessions or bright and early Friday mornings before school. The enthusiasm that they display at practices pays off in the results. Participating in the Halloween Parade was their first experience in marching dur- ing the past year. Memorial Day also gave them an opportunity to show off their tal- ents, but their biggest event of the year was the Spring Concert. They spent many long hours perfecting their program of var- ious marches and oyertures. Anyone who wants to play an instru- ment may get pre-band training from Mr. Allera and then join the junior Band. By the time these young musicians reach high school age, they have many years of valuable experience behind themg there- fore the Senior Band has a continual sup- plykof experienced handsmen joining its ran 's. Men usually thought Vicky's pranks were cute, but Professor Perry curtly ordered Vicky to call and apologize or drop his course. Vicky sulkily obeyed. At the Perry home she over- heard a bit of gossip. Professor Perry had been offered a deanship . . . if he can get himself a wife. His friend john and his familv rally 'round to help. john offered his secretary, a curly- headed little minx who couldn't spell . . . an ideal wifel Grandma's candidate was Tootsie Bean. a bit plump, but a masterhand with lemon chiffon pie. Vicky, longing for revenge, pro- posed a friend, Valerie, a Southern charmer who made a fool of every man she met. Grandpa wouldn't tell the name of his candidate! Con- vulsing scenes followed: Tootsie appeared with a pie for the Professor. Her pugilist brother saw to it that he ate itl The three candidates came to dinner and wheedled and flattered the embarassed Professor. Grandpa made each think the Professor had proposed an elopement, and they all appeared, ready for the dash to matrimony! There was plenty of comedy as the irate girls faced each other-especially when. to save the situation, john dressed as a woman and came in weeping, trailing three children after him and passing himself as the Professoris lost wife! The three girls consoled themselves elsewhere, In a Whirlwind finish. Crandpais candidate won, and the Professor falls in love with the little spitfire, Vicky. 'KProfessor. how could you? The Blue Devils made a bad showing in their first game losing 33-14, but after intensive prac- tice the following week, the team came back to beat Homer City 12-7. After slopping around in the mud for 48 min- utes the Devils came out on the higher side of the scoring column beating Ford City 20-0 for the second win of the season. The team then went to Springdale for their first away game of the season. The Dynamos of Springdale couldnit stand up to the Leech- burg eleven and ended up on the short end of the score losing 24-14. The Devils continued on the road of victory by trouncing Apollo, their rival from up the river, 33-0. Traveling to Tarentum, the Devils had a gruelling battle in rain and mud, but managed to blank the Redcats 13-0. Staying on the road the following week, the Devils traveled to Kittanning. The tilt with Blairsville was supposed to be the toughest test of Leechburgis ability, but the Devils played very sharp ball that night capitalizing on the breaks in the second half. They added 27 points in the second half to the 6 they had for a total of to Blairsvilleis 7. The final game of the season with Freeport came up with Leechburg one of the two remain- ing teams in the class A championship race, and Freeport. undefeated in 8 contests. The intense rivalry which exists between the teams helped to contribute to the importance of the game. The Devils gained 2 points on a safety in the first quarter and held the lead to the end of the third quarter when Freeport scored 6 points. The Devils fought back to bring the pigskin up to the Freeport 1 foot line with seconds left to play, but they failed to score. Leechburg lost the game. but gave an excellent display of good football skill and sportsmanship in the most closely contended game in the Kiski Valley. SENIOR LETTERMEN EMIL MACDIK Emil was our reliable right end. He gained many yards, broke up numerous plays, and recovered many fumhles with his aggressive tackling and alert playing. CHARLES BONELLO Chuck was the stalwart right tackle of the Leech- burg line on offense. He al- ways annoyed the other team with his remarks and constant razzing during the game. JOE DUBOVI joe was a dependable end whom the coaches could fall hack on when necessary. He was a victim of the fact that only eleven boys can play at one time. WILLIAM FULCOMER YVilly was our 125 pound, 5 foot, 5 inches right half- back. Ile helped keep the morale of the team high, and his fightinz spirit served as an incentive for the rest of the team. JOE BIARTIN joe played middle defen- sive guard for the Lcech- hurg eleven. He hroke through the opposing line to hothcr the quarterback and hogged down many of his opponents, drives. 80 EDWARD CARTER Bunn started out late, his senior year being his first vear, and had a lot to learn. He progressed rapidly, but he was hampered hy an in- jury. CHARLES CIBIK Charlie didn't see much action this year because of an injury suffered early in the season. Of the 8 games lost, only three were included in league competition. The team suffered when they lost one of their key players to the varsity squad. The Blue Imps outscored their opponents during the season 801 to 722 having a margin of 79 points. The team looks very promising for the future. They have a lot of height and aggressiveness which are essentials for good basketball players.
