Looking back, we see happy years. On thatfirst frightening day in 1946, we entered a strange building of which we knew nothing. We were divided, part of the class being in Miss Cox's room, part in Mrs. Boyette's. ln the second grade, we had over- come our fears and had gained some skills. We were again divided between Mrs. Buyette and Mrs. Proctor. Another year passed, and our large class was sectioned between Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Proctor. In the fourth year, we became well-acquainted, for we were united in Mrs. Proctor's room. The fifth year we were disappointed again, because once more we were divided into sections. Our teachers were Mrs. Floars and Mrs. Yelverton. During this year Peggy Britt and Jean Carter joined our class and Pat Pierce left us. The following year we were taught by Miss Wainwright and Miss Jones. This yearMrs. Wainwright's room visited the WILSON DAILY TIMES office. Our seventh year we were made into two sections, our teachers being Mrs. Baker and Miss Jones. The n ext year we reac hed the last plateau of the grammar grades. Our teachers were Mrs. Brinson and Mrs. Wethington. During this year when we ran into the longer, more serious type of study, we had a glimpse of the hardships which lay ahead. Donnie Woodruff joined our class this year. Finally the big day arrived. We became freshmen with Mr. Stogner, our coach, as homeroom teacher. Mr. Pridgen, a new principal, joined our school this year. Our other teachers were Mrs. Shackleford, Mrs. Deans, Mrs. Perkins and Mr. Matthis. We soon became sophomores with our new teacher, Mrs. Yelverton, as home- room teacher. Our faculty lost Mrs. Perkins and Mrs. Deans for this year, but Mrs. Eatman joined our teaching staff. Gail and Gary Peele joined us and Pat Pierce returned. The main event of our freshman and sophomore years was the Mother-Daughter-Father-Son Banquet. We drew closer to the climax of our school life by becoming juniors. Mrs. Deans rejoined us and Mr. Henderson became our new coach. Ray and Patsy Barfield and Becky Wood joined our class during this term. We were very sorry to lose Mr. Pridgen at Christmas who re-enlisted in the armed forces. He was replaced by Mr. Taylor who helped us to finish the year successfully. The highlight of this year was our Junior-Senior Banquet. We finally reached the glorious year which made us seniors. Mrs. Ruby Shackleford, our English teacheq became our class sponsor. We lost Mr. Taylor who was replaced by Mr. Rufus S. Swain. We also lost Hazel Lamm who found life more exciting as Mrs. Wilbur Jackson of Fort Worth, Texas. The memorable happenings of this year were the Junior-Senior Banquet, Senior Play and Graduation. As we draw near the long awaited day, we nook back and see a long, hard, but enjoyable journey. We look ahead into the future and realize that it has only begun! Hetold me he had recently seen a copy of the LONDON JOURNAL and was a little surprised to see that Joseph Barnes and Janice Godwin were currently appearing on the London stage in Shakespeare's play Macbeth. This set us to discussing our seniors of i958 from Lee Woodard School, and we found, by comparing notes, we could locate nearly all of them. We began by looking in the medical field and to our surprise, we learned that Carnell Mercer is now a well- known dentist, who has discovered a new chemical-molecular acid, which guarantees unbreakable false teeth. Becky Wood has climbed the ladder of success and now is supervisor of a large nurse's school. James Matthew has concocted a new lotion for growing hair and it really works. His slogan is: Try Matthew's Surgro Hair Lotion. We know it is a success, because Donnie had seen Gary Peele a year or two ago and he had only a thin fringe of hair around his bald plate. Gary's hairsupposedly lefthim during. his intensive study in dramatic school. Last week when Donnie happened to meet Gary again, he had a full shock of raven black hair, grown, Gary said, after using James' product. We found that many of our friends had become well-known and some were really going places. Billy Bardin and Jean Carter had iust completed their world-wide travels with a final fling at romance in Venice. Linda Pittman and Roland Godwin have received a medal from the President for inventing a collapsible satallite, which has established the world's record for speed and altitude. Bobby Edmundson has amazed his acquaintances by settling dawn to studying and is now a professor on Mars, teaching his pupils about life on earth. Don Matthis is planning to cross the Pacific Ocean in his own specially-designed boat, equipped with wings, so that it may rise and fly if the sea gets rough. l was rather disappointed in Adron Bass who has made his own rocket, but it doesn't seem to take off. fMaybe the fuel he's using is wrong. lt is supposedly propelled by super-duper peanut oil J Next on our list were the famous poets and authors. Helen Jean Barnes has recently been acclaimed for a poem entitled The Unknown fand what ittries tosay remains unknownl. Patsy Barfield and Ray Barfield together wrote a play called Brotherly and Sisterly Love. lt is currently being produced on Broadway and Gail and Gary Peele are in the lead roles. Joy Aycock published a biography of Shakespeare in which she proves that he never lived. The other members of our class were living simpler and quieter lives. Sybil Tomlinson has become a devoted housewife to her husband and an excellent mother to her twelve children. Peggy Britt has become a successful model in New York. Her picture recently appeared on the coverof MADEMOISELLE. Patricia Pierce is manager of Pierce's Five-and-Ten-Cent Store. Richard Lamm and Raymond Pipkin are both cops, directing traffic around the four-leaf traffic circle of Black Creek. ln his off-hours Richard is preparing a textbook to be used in Russian schools, teaching Russian children the advantages of a democratic society. Sally Turnage is still in college trying to graduate. After having flunked out at East Carolina and Duke in an effort to become a coach, she has enrolled at Atlantic Christian, and having changed her course to music, we hope she will be able to earn her diploma. Clark Williams established such a brilliant record in French at Carolina that he has studied at the Sorbonne in France and is now instructor of modern languages at Columbia University. Hubert Lucas is a big cattle owner in Texas operating his own ranch. We had some little difficulty in deciding why he named his ranch The Linda Faye. After comparing our notes about our fellow friends, we had laughs remembering the school days. And as we parted, we knew that we'd never forget the good ole' days at Lee Woodard Hi'. CAROL HURLEY Prophet W-T LAST WILL and TESTAMENT We, the Seniors of I958, being in a fairly sane state of mind and being in possession of a few of our mental faculties, after the mad rush of our senior year, do will and bequeath to our fellow students, many valuable articles and traits of character which we believe will be of special benefit to them in these days of space travel: I, JOY AYCOC K, leave my toni kit and bobby pins to Bobby Ann Hayes. I, BILL BARDIN, leave my whining complaints to Bill Boyette, who will be able to entertain the teachers with them. I, RAY BARFIELD, leave my skill at winning the affections of the girls to Edgar Mallard. I, HELEN BARNES, leave my dignity to Martha Speight. l, JOSEPH BARNES, leave my corny jokes to Dorothy Godwin, to enliven her seriousness. I, ADRIAN BASS, leave to Jackie Pierce, ownership of a filling station which refuels only rockets and other interplanetary-space vehicles. I, PEGGY BRITT, leave ten gallons of gasoline to Lynwood Braswell, to refuel his latest invention, Space Ship ZN. We, JEAN CARTER and PATSY BARFIELD, leave our ability to win beauty contests to Ronny Aycock, feeling that he will eventaully make a success in Hollywood. I, BOBBY EDMUNDSON, leave my wonderful school spirit to Lellan Boykin. I, JANICE GODWIN, leave my glib conversation to Marion Blow. I, CAROL HURLEY, leave my ability to play basketball to Sue Harrell, so that she can become a first string player. I, RICHARD LAMM, leave my boisterous personality to Gene Lewis who needs livening up a bit. We, HUBERT LUCAS and ROLAND GODWIN, leave, to return, for a couple of freshmen girls. I, JAMES MATTHEWS, leave my gay laughter and ready wit to Edwin Evans. I, DON MATTHIS, leave my youthful looks and babyish ways to Rodney Bass. I, CARNELL MERCER, leave my feather bed to Ronald Tomlinson, hoping that it will induce more peaceful dreams than l've enjoyed. l, GAIL PEELE, leave my quick temper to Joanne Mercer, hoping it will enable her to speak her mind occasion- ally. I, GARY PEELE, leave my ability to stay out of trouble to Norman Holland. I, PAT PIERCE, leave my quiet manner and composure to Tootsie Johnson. l, RAYMOND PIPKIN, leave my last sleeping pill to George Pierce. I, LINDA PITTMAN, leave my tooth-less comb to Mary Speight. I, SYBIL TOMLINSON, leave my well-used thimble, needle, and thread to Jean Lamm. l, SALLY TURNAGE, leave my worn out basketball shoes to Elizabeth Lamm. I, CLARK WILLIAMS, leave my stubby pencil fwhich has written the Constitution a number of timei to anyone in need of a pencil. I, BECKY WOOD, leave my flirtatious ways to Myrtle Cross. I, DONALD WOODRUFF, leave my athletic ability to Thomas Pierce, who is much in need of it. PEGGY BR ITT Testator i ! I.. l I I , 1 k H ... ' T i :A :A 'W E A ' Ria. CLASS PO EM Dear School, as we near the final day, We look at the past of our school's long way, We have faced together the tasks of these years, And have shared the happiness as well as the tears, We now know what it means to be faithful and true, Loyal and devoted to a school dear as you. And now as the great future looms ahead We see the difficult paths that we must tread, We take a strong grip on the courage which -you give Thus we will go forward more successfully to live.
