WAID SCHOOL ROCKY MOUNT, VIRGINIA THE ANNUAL STAFF Editor Brenda Toney Co-Editor Linda Hopkins Feature Editor Marian Prunty Business Manager Alvin Clements Sports Editor Assistant Manager Arlene Reynolds Rebecca Holland Typist Betty Pralin Sponsors Mr. W. H. Wood--Mrs. E. L. Pleasants Our day here at Lee Waid slowly comes to an end. As we move out to venture into the world to serve humanity, we leave behind the cherished memories that have endeared us to our Alma Mater. Good lead- ers we hope to be, as we go forth from this our dear school. To this end the Senior Class presents THE LEGEND of 1968. SENIOR CLASS DEDICATION Through the guidance of Mrs. Naomi H. Berger, the Senior Class of 1968 has been able to overcome difficulties and solve many problems which we could not have done other - wise. She has aided us in increasing our efficiency and improving our morale. She has given services that have proven invaluable to us as indi- viduals and to the class as a whole. To Mrs. Naomi H. Berger, we dedicate THE LEGEND OF 1968. iO ie RONG EIN ENT OF SCHOOLS It has been a pleasure to observe over the years the progress that has taken place in the Lee M. Waid School. This progress is evident in the type of facil- ities, the qualifications of the teachers and staff, and the expanded offering. These improvements have resulted needs and certainly the development of young people who will take their places in society as intelligent, informed and responsible citizens. This is the thing that gives me more satisfaction and increases my faith in the efficiency of the public schools in these days of transition and social upheaval. Very best wishes to the students and faculty and especially to the members of the senior class. Mrs. Prunty and Mr. Lester mE Miss Waid Mrs. Watson Sia SES il: LES Rca DW OaeZ PAC GUE IG PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Dear Class of 1968, High school graduation is always a joyous, ex- citing, and sad time in the life of any boy or girl. There are always the joys of accomplishment, the excitement of uncertainty, and the sadness of farewell. | For you, as graduates of Lee M. Waid High School in the year 1968, there are special impli- cations --special challenges --special responsibil - ities, for in all probability, you, the class of 1968, will constitute one of the last grad- uating classes that Lee M. Waid High School will ever have. You must, then, without a doubt, become very special persons--persons worthy of the time, the effort, andthe concern which your teachers lavished upon you. What you do with your lives from now on is individual, depending upon your own as- pirations, capabilities and initiative. Whatever you become, or fail to become, how- ever, will reflect the extend to which Lee M. Waid School justified its having existed. For what you become, you become because you went to Lee M. Waid High School. The times are in your favor. Never before in our country's history have there been fewer limitations imposed upon what a graduating high school senior could reasonably aspire for than there are now--in 1968. a @ So, dream, if you will, of that great and perfect society which the founding fathers : envisioned. And, within the context of this dream, order your lives. Set realistic and worthy goals for yourselves and pursue these goals with a vengeance. Establish and behave according to a well-defined value system or morale code. Develop a concern 8 and compassion for your fellowman. In short, live lives that you, yourselves, will be- come worthy components of the reality which your dream will become. With sincere congratulations and best wishes to all of you, Iam Sincerely yours, Sep lansleesteise EGincipal , a Be Mr. C. Anderson Mrs. N. Berger Mr. J. We must make haste no time to waste Our journey we must start But wait before we close the doo. We open wide our hearts To Lee M. Waid dear Lee M. Waid Our alma mater dear You taught us all both strong and tall The base for our careers. 26 CLASS POEM We entered Lee M. Waid four years ago, To develop our minds of things we didn't know. Now we leave to spread our knowledge, That we have gained here at Waid. We've many friends and become accustomed to new ways. Struggles, steppingstones, and hardships have been many, To cope with the stresses, and strains of society have been plenty, We all have learned to look to God above all men, To uphold our beliefs, and stray from sins. Grateful to those who have striven so hard, We extend our hands in sadness to depart. To the Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and all, Strive always to uphold Waid and it will never fall. Education is our greatest need for tomorrow One can never look back on it in sorrow. The class bids each, and all a farewell, We have had hard times, and many times that were swell. Now we all say good-bye in our final departure, We, the senior class of 1968, Bid all of you farewell, for we must go. CLASS COLORS CLASS FLOWER Navy Blue and Light Blue White Carnation Class Motto Never Dodge Difficulty: Meet It, Greet It, Beat It! 27 © CLASS PROPHECY (4 I, Arlene Reynolds, your prophetess of the class of 1968, bid you listen to words of wisdom. I shall speak what was revealed unto me as I looked into my crystal ball. I see men and women who were once my classmates at Lee M. Waid now citizens in the world of society. I see Harry Board as a wealthy cattle rancher in the foothills of Kentucky. Ina twelve-story building on 5th avenue in New York City, I see Ida Belcher performing her duties as an executive secretary to Howard Hughes the well-known multi- millionaire. Among the most prominent Negro scientists of our times are Alvin Clements, anu- clear physicist at Cape Kennedy, Florida. Accompaning him as his assistant is Pro- fessor Linda Hopkins. As I thumb through the pages of Mademoiselle I see a stunning young lady all dressed in evening attire. She is no other than, Betty Marie Fralin. On the campus of U.C.L.A. I see a famous football player talking to Bill Russell, coach of the Boston Celtics. Oh my! Can that be William Dixon? My crystal ball is growing dim, but oh! Who is this I see? I see Brenda Toney as first lady to the first Negro president of the United States. Can you believe it! Who is that nice young congressman cruising around the Pacific on his yacht? Well bless my soul, it's congressman Charles Price of Va. In the famous French restaurant La Cusine the chief Chef is preparing his famous dish Crepe Suzette. He is one of our former Virginians lewrence Mack. He is about to serve this dish to several digni- taries. They are no other than Jean Holland, Leroy McHimer and his interpreter Ar- villa Gaod. London, England is the place of mod fashion. Among the famous fashion salons on 28 Carnabery St. is the Westchester house of fashions, owned and operated by Geraldine O'Neal and Linda Fuller. Their leading designers are Ellen Jamison and Mary Patterson. I look down Broadway I see two familiar names in lights. Well, unless my eyes are deceiving me it looks like Dora Holland and Margaret Cuff starring in the Broadway musical ''What a way to Go. What is this I see? Three distinguished gentlemen teach- ing in Macon, Georgia. They are Lonnie Taylor who teaches shorthand, Frank Tyree an Agriculture major and James Patterson a Physical Education coach. Victory is the word for Donell Simmons. He has won 30 major awards in the Atlan- tic Speed Car races. He accredits his success to the fine maintenance service to his mechanic Roger Menefee. (Keep up the good work). What do we have here another Elizabeth Taylor? She is glamorous, talented, intel- lectual and a thrilling actress. She is no other than Arlene Reynolds. It's blast-off time. What! That's not a lady astronaut, or is it? Up, up and away she goes into the wild blue yonder. What's that written on the outside of the capsule. It looks like Explorer No. 9 operated by Rebecca Holland. (HELP) I do believe we have another Picasso. Betty Belcher's latest painting hangs in the National Art Museum, and her sister Vonnie is doing well in interior decorating. And your favorite D.J. on station H.I.P. in Washington D.C. is Celeste Levisy. All day long she plays groovy records and sings I love you ya, ya, ya. She isn't another Aretha Franklin, but her voice is a combination of Carla Thomas, Diana Ross and Pearl Bailey. Her famous hit Soul Serenade sold over a million | copies. Marian Prunty the greatest. And Deneice Manns, Adean Stockton and Wanda Smith are prominent secretaries for the Atlantic Life Insurance Co. in Arizona. Look here, Deax Patterson owns the largest dance studio in Hawaii. 29 SENIOR LOG BEST ATHLETE James Patterson, Lawrence Mack. Our experience as the first and only school to move from the Virginia Interscholastic Association into the Virginia High School League were most enriching and rewarding. We feel that the contributions made by Lee M.
