A) roo Dear Class of 1967, Each generation seems to possess a burning predisposition to preach to each succee ding generation. This predisposition obtains with my’generation, too, not-withstanding the fact that we, ourselves, have thoroughly mismanaged many of the things that we would preach ! to you about. We have bombarded you with precepts which we have not had the courage to reinforce with the examples which your generation’ cries out for. We have asked that you love in the midst of our hatred; that you remain honest in the midst of our dishonesty; that you remain sober in the midst of our drunkenness; that you remain chaste in the midst of our fornication and adultery; that you remain straight-forward in the midst of our de- viousness; and, that you remain reverent in the midst of our irreverence. In short, we have tried to sell to you a bill of goods which we, ourselves, have not had the courage to purchase. Further, we have presented you a world which has been tottering for twenty odd years on the brink of nu- clear annihilation--a world dominated by fear; a hungry world; a world ravaged by poverty, disease, ignorance, and other forms of human misery; a world sundered by conflicting ideas, ideals, and ideologies. Ours has been an inept performance; yours must be better. The fact that you inherited this imperfect society does not give you license to do nothing about it, for not only is your own personal contentment in the balance, but in the larger perspective, your country's integrity, and even the literal survival of our planet is in your hands. What, then, can you do--what must you do--if you are to be instrumental in resolving the impasse that we have created? Your generation must dedicate itself to living those precepts to which my generation has merely given lipservice. You must set for yourselves rigid codes of personal morality to which all other aspects of your life will be subordinate. You must cultivate a sincere concern for the lot of your fellowman whoever or wher- ever he may be. You must cultivate the self-discipline for hard work; everyone should care enough about at least one thing to work hard at it. And, you must commit yourselves categorically to American democracy, for, notwithstanding its imperfections and shortcomings, no other form of government ever conceived by the mind of man can touch it. This is the gauntlet which has been dropped for you as 1967 graduates of Lee M. Waird School. The course of history depends upon what you do with it. Sincerely yours, Jk Gk, S.sG ester Frincipal
