CLASSES 81 Class of ’88 Makes Early in the year, the Freshman Class Officers were elected by their class. With the guidance of Mrs. Lawson, their sponsor, the class officers led the class of '88 through a very productive year. The five Freshman Class Officers are as follows from left to right: Beth Bankowski, Secretary; Johnny Frazier, President; Joni Belle, Vice Presi- dent; Jacqueline Moore, Sgt-at-arms; and Joseph Curry, Treasurer. 82 CLASSES First Appearance at Lee The Class of 1988 made its first appearance at Lee this year. The Freshman class participated in the Homecoming festivities by building a float which placed third in the competition. The class showed their pride this year by wearing their class shirts. To raise money, they raffled a color television. The Freshman class of 1988 truly kept up with the GENERAL PACE. Above: Mrs Margaret Lawson gives one of her famous quotes. Delegates are chosen for their outstanding leadership abilities. They arc eligi- ble to run for and actually serve in state government of- fices for one day. In Montgomery, Debbie successfully campaigned for the office of Lieutenant Governor. While in Montgomery, all the state delegates listened to lec- tures on local, county, and state government. To be eligible for Girls’ Nation, a delegate must have run for office at Girls' State and be elected a “good citizen” by the other delegates. All the “good citizens” chosen must go through an interview with the counselors in which they arc asked questions about the federal government. As the result of her experiences at Girls’ State and her interview, Debbie was one of two girls to attend Girls' Nation out of the 260 girls present at Girls' State. Conducted in Washington D.C., the Girls' Nation involved sight seeing and a visit with the President. Delegates also had the chance to run for national govern- ment offices. Barry Merritt and Mike Rickies were chosen their Junior year to represent Lee at Boys' State. Their leader- ship abilities, as well as academic and extra-curricular achievements, led to their being chosen as the two delegates from Lee. The goal of Boys’ State is to familiarize delgates with state government. The delegates go to UNA for a week of lectures and campaigning for state office. At the end of the week, they go to Montgomery for a day, taking over state government in the respective offices in which they are elected. The Varsity decided everything should go on schedule and continued their preparation for Friday’s game. Because of stormy weather and wet field the passing attack of the Generals was reduced considerably. The of- fense was confined to the ground as the Generals rolled over 200 yards rushing. The only score of the game came on a 48 yard touchdown from Bart Bankowski to Ivan McGlathery. It was the first win of the season for Lee. SPORTS 147 THE GENERALS SHINE The Generals traveled to Decatur’s Ogle Stadium for an important region game against the Decatur Red Raiders. An early Decatur touchdown put the Raiders ahead for good. A strong Raider defense and pass rush slowed the Generals offensively. Lee’s only score came on a ten yard pass from Greg Herron to Anthony Bush. The 27-6 loss evened Lee's record at 1-1 in region play with only one game to play. In the last regular season game the Generals soundly defeated the Brewer Patriots. Touchdowns by Kerry Rascoe and John Jackson plus a touchdown pass from Greg Herron to Anthony Bush gave Lee the win. The solid 28-7 win over the Patriots was Lee’s second region win of the season and handed the Generals a berth in the state play-offs. 148 SPORTS AT THE PLAYOFFS The Generals entered their first playoff game since 1981 against the highly ranked Austin Black Bears. The Black Bears jumped out to an early lead when they scored on a long run by James Shackleford. A 20 yard touchdown pass by Greg Herron to Ivan McGlathery brought the score to 10-7 at the half. Another Lee score on a 6 yard run by Don Rice kept the Generals in the lead. The game came down to the wire with Austin leading 20-17. An attempted field goal by Mundo Ruiz in the closing seconds failed and Austin came away with the win. SPORTS 149 CO-CITY CHAMPS — FIRST TIME EVER Coach Theo Battle led the freshman Lee Generals football team. The Generals had a fantastic season with a record of 6-2. Many hours of hard work and diligent practices were revealed with their award- winning, entertaining performances throughout the year. The Confedercttes broke tradition by attending a different camp this year. However, they kept the tradition of being the number one team, being awarded the team with the most spirit and the best home routine. They also receiv- ed over 75 individual superior ribbons. Two of the Confedercttes were chosen as outstanding over all the 400 girls that attended the camp. Ginny Frazier and Rhonda Baldwin were nominees for Superstar Drill team Girl. Rhonda Baldwin was chosen as Superstar Drilltcam Girl and went to Hawaii to appear in the Aloha Bowl as a member of the National Superstar Drillteam. — In August, the Confedercttes underwent a project to “fix up their new room. They painted the walls, built shelves, put up mirrors, and decorated the walls. They financed this project with support from the Booster club and from funds raised at a summer carwash. The Confedercttes traditionally accompany the Marching Generals to Lee football games. They also traveled with the marching band to perform at a New Orleans Saints game, and lead the New York City Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Following football season, the Con- federates also performed at all of the home basketball games. Picture No. I: Andrea Pauli, Co-Captain; Ginny Frazier. Cap- tain; Rhond Baldwin. Co-Captain. In later years when you pick up your yearbook you will be able to recognize the “General Appearance” of Lee as it was in 1985. The 1985 Silver Sabre Staff chose the theme. The General Appearance, to give a sense impression of what we as Lee High Generals appear to be not only in our physical appearance but also in attitudes, accom- plishments, and activities. We hope you will enjoy your yearbook today as well as many years from now. The memories locked in this an- nual will serve as reminders of not only what is pictured, but of everything surrounding that time and place. We would like to express our thanks to Mrs. Martha Vandiver for her guidance and her tireless devo- tion while working on this edition. Wc also appreciate the cooperation and support of Waldrup Studio. I want to sincerely wish every Lee High student the best of luck and a happy life! Yours truly. Ginny Frazier 1985 Editor-in-Chief 232 CLOSING Lasting Memories Time has taken our yesterday It lies within the past, Never can we relive a minute of our yesterday, Nor ever bring it back. Time has brought us today, And soon it too will be gone, For never does time stand still For anyone too long. Soon, time will bring us tomorrow, As each second ticks away And within this tomorrow We will grow with every passing day. Although much has been taken, And our years will continue to pass, Time will never take our memories For those were meant to last. To show their intense school spirit, they actively participated in all school spirit events. Their en- thusiasm toward school functions led them to participate in the Delta Debs Disco at the Knight of Columbus and the Senior Showcase. Their primary objective was to promote brotherhood throughout the fraternity. Fundraising was the highlight of the business year. To assist with fundraising, they held many informal parties. TDK anx- iously forecasted the coming year as being full of excitement and intrigue. ADS 245 L to R — Juice Byrom, Iclccn Dwyer. Marcy Miller. Ginny Frazier. Kristi Hcatley. MaryJanc Reynolds. Ted Frankenfield I’m proud to say that Delta Debs is not only the oldest but the best sorority at Lee. We wear the spectacular col- ors of blue and grey. Our main objective is to promote love and friendship. Delta Debs is very grateful to have been sponsored by Mrs. Becky Smith these last two years. Our sorority consists of 35 members with the backup of our seven big brothers. Each year we have money making projects. This money goes toward Thanksgiving Christmas Dinners, Valentine Dance, and our Rush Teas. The rest goes toward paying expenses for our trip to Florida. I would like to wish the best of luck to this wonderful organization in the future, but most of all I am going to miss each and every one of you. I love you all. With the election of great new leaders, ABK has proven that sisterhood is a strong force in all of our lives. ABK has grown even closer this year through activities such as breakfasts, slumber parties, jersey days, a cook-out, a Christmas party, “love your big and little sister days, and a Fall and Spring Rush. However, most of our efforts were placed on raising money for our annual trip to Florida. To do this, we had car washes, paid our monthly dues, and sold Easter products. We would like to thank the many people who have helped us this year, such as: Mrs. Deerman, our financial sponsor, for having the patience to assist whenever needed and keep us close together. Our big brothers, we thank for their love and support, especially Dirk Fretwell, Maurice Sharpe, David Yell, and Shane Young. Also, our super honorary big brothers. Chip Tomlinson and Trent Sharpe for always being there, but most of all our President, Karen Ann Daniel. She has been a super member and leader for three years. Without her, 1984-85 would have been very empty. We are going to miss her next year. We love you Karen Ann!
