Steve was involved in many school activities, including being President of Student Council and Editor of Silver Sabre. During his senior year, in 1977, Steve was elected Mr. Lee High by the student body. Those who knew him will never forget the warmth and good humor he spread throughout his life. The year was filled with many events, which was an attempt to get the students excited about the class itself. Becoming involved in these activities was perhaps the best decision a Senior could have made. Not only did the involvement help the student, but it united our class as well. Being able to colaborate on different ideas was one of the greatest accomplishments the Class of 83 achieved. Their officers have lead them through several activities and fundraisers. Approximately $200 was raised with the annual sale of class t-shirts, and a new idea of selling onionheads. Some of the proceeds went toward the building of the freshman homecoming float, which successully won second place. Features 117 THREE STUDENTS HONORED AT BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ STATE Each summer, three students are chosen from the upcoming senior class to represent Lee at Boys’ and Girls’ State. Boys’ state was held at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Girls’ state was held at Huntingdon college in Montgomery. The representatives from all Alabama high schools spent a week learning about our government. The students run for city and state offices. The winners actually take over the offices of the state for one day. Boys’ and Girls’ state is an unforgetable experience. She has kept her grades in tact as a member of the Honor Society and has received many honorable awards for her achievements. Her senior year she has proved to be an asset to the school. Century III and National Merit Award John Moses was one of our most outstanding seniors. He was the Century III contest winner and Lee’s only National Merit Semi-Finalist winner this year. John was chosen by his peers as an outstanding senior and by the Honor Society as one of nine students of the month. He is also listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Students and represented Lee at Alabama Boy’s State in Montgomery in June. John attended UAH during the year taking math and science courses on the college level while completing his senior year. He also found time to play varsity baseball. The 1982 Junior-Senior prom was held in the Exhibit Hall at the Von Braun Civic Center. The theme song was “Somewhere Down the Road” by Barry Manilow. The Junior and Senior class of- ficers and favorites represented Lee students leadout. A student must have an overall grade average of ninety or above, pass a screening test of five teachers, and meet the standards of the society in the fields of leadership, academics, service, and character to become a member of the National Honor Society. At this time, once again, Mr. Bob Baccus put together an award-winning show. The Generals started out this year with a trip to Pensacola to perform the half-time show when Lee played Tate. It was planned for the marchers to perform the half time show for the New Orleans Saints as they hosted the San Francisco 49’ers in a professional football game. Of course, due to the NFL strike, this trip was cancelled. It was their loss! On October 6, the Generals traveled to Guntersville for competition, where all units were rated superior in their performance. The Marching Generals hope to end the year with pride when they go to New Orleans in the Spring for competition to fight for the title of ‘‘Greatest Band in Dixie.” David Tiller directed the band through the 82-83 season. Clubs 163 Tech School The Huntsville area Vocational Technical Center offers students of Huntsville’s five high schools a variety of courses to prepare them for the future. These courses include instruction in data processing, horticulture, telecommunica- tions, welding, and cosmetology. Courses are offered at Tech School in both the morning and afternoon. Students attend the classes at the school for three periods of each day. The remainder of the day is spent at Lee in required courses. Clubs 169 JROTC The Lee High School JROTC was again designated as an “Honor Unit with Distinction” for the past three years. This means that the unit is in the top ten percent of all JROTC units in the country. The Rifle Team was the City Champs with six wins and no losses in the city. In the North Alabama Rifle League, the team came in third place. The Drill Team has performed at numerous functions and won several awards. The Units Orienteering Team has won two trophies this year. The game was the sec- ond of Johnson’s season, which was an advantage over Lee’s lack of game ex- perience. Neither team scored in the first half. Johnson scored in the second half to lead 7-0. The win was not only a victory in the city, but also a class 4A Region 12 win. The Panthers turned the ball over three times in the first half. From the opening kickoff Hunt- sville drove the ball to the Lee 34 and fumbled. Lee fumbled back on their own 27 and the panthers moved to the 11, but missed a field goal attempt. The Generals capitalized on another Panther fumble on the Panther 45. Terry Allen scored the first touchdown on a 33 yard run with two minutes left in the first half. The PAT was wide. The win gave Lee a record of 2- 3, but more importantly produced a 2-0 record in region 12 action. The Generals scored on three of its first four possessions. Everett Crawford scored the first touchdown in the game with 7:35 remain- ing in the first quarter. His 13-yard touchdown scamper capped a 68-yard scoring drive for the Generals. Terri Allen’s impressive 57-yard touchdown run with 9:44 left in the first half, was followed by a successful two- point conversion by Roger Wright. Allen’s second touchdown came from three yards out midway in the third period, giv- ing Lee a 28 8 lead. Quarterback Grayland Robinson also got in the act scoring on a 5-yard run. Robinson finish- ed the night with three completions in seven attempts for a total of 60 yards. Easterlings first touchdown with 4:36 left in the first quarter, was setup by Grayland Robinson’s interception at the Tigers 30. Lee 33-Bradley County 7 Captain Joey Flanders The Lee Generals, sparked by Terry Allen’s running ability, exploded to a 33- 7 victory over Bradley County. The win gave the Generals a 4-5 record going into the next week’s final game against Lin- coln County. Lee trailed 7-6 at the half but later scored four touchdowns, three in the third quarter, to take command of the game. Lee’s first touchdown came from an 11-yard pass from Grayland Robinson to Reggie Smith, capping a 73-yard drive in nine plays. In the third quarter Lee took the lead for good by driving 68 yards in five plays, Allen breaking away for the last 36 yards. Quarterback Mike Easterling’s two point run put Lee ahead 14-7. Allen scored his second touchdown early in the fourth quarter when he sprinted 75 yards into the end zone. Charles Elliott kicked the extra point afterwards. Lee’s fourth touchdown came when Eric Tepool scored on a 10- yard pass from Grayland Robinson. A two-point pass failed and it was 27-7. The team only lost two Seniors from last year and added three Juniors, two Sophomores, and one Freshman. Returning Varsity players were Lisa Baldwin, Pam Dorsey, Paula Dorsey, Katrina Jackson, and Diane Conely. The Generals started the season off with a home-game win over Buckhorn. In the Hazel Green tournament, Lee won in the first round and then lost in the final game to take second place in the tournament. The highlight of the season for Lee was their defeat of the Lady Johnson Jaguars at Lee. Johnson finished the season with one loss, the only blemish on their record being the loss to Lee. The Lady Generals finished the season with a record slightly under 500. The Region 12 Tournament was held at Austin High School. Lee won the first game by beating Coffee 48-40 after los- ing to the Yellow-Jackets the Friday before. Austin beat the Generals in the second round and ended the Generals’ season. Toward the end of the season the Generals were third in the city with a record of 15-9. The Var- sity Generals start the Regional Tournament February 22 at Cof- fee with high hopes. The Generals will lose seven Seniors this year. Highlights of the season included beating Huntsville twice and a big win over Austin, a state-ranked team.
