England was director of Student Activities at Lee High School from 1966 until his death on August 30, 1982.. eos he England taught health and physical education, coached football, baseball, basketball, and served as a guidance counselor before being appointed Director of Student Activities in 1966. Prior to coming to Lee in 1959, Mr. England taught science and coached football at Chamberlin and Bell Vocational Schools in Washington, D.C. Asa student at George WashingtonUniversity from 1949 to 1953, Mr. England excelled as a varsity defensive end, being selected to the All Southern Conference Team and being awarded the Outstanding Senior Trophy. Under the guidance and direction of Jim England, Lee’s coaches and teams have captured dozens of district, regional, and state crowns in baseball, wrestling, track, boys’ and girls’ soccer, football, and boys’ and girls’ basketball. Fewmen have devoted as much time and energy toa school program as Jim England. He was first to arrive at games and the last to leave. His involvement was not only with athletics but with all aspects of student activities. Jim had a great deal of love for the students at Lee High School. It was this love for and attachment to the students that kept him smiling while Ss worked for their benefit often as long as sixteen hours a day. Jim England will be remembered for the values he exhibited in his life. He was a beloved husband and father, tected and outstanding teacher and administrator, and friend to all who worked in education with him. He devoted his life to people and education. For his success, his devotion to students, we dedicate the 1983 Shield to Mr. James W. England.
