ENGLAND A MAN DEDICATED TO HIS WORK tines WwW. England was director of Student Activities at Lee High School from 1966 until his death on August 30, 1982.. eos he England taught health and physical education, coached football, baseball, basketball, and served as a guidance counselor before being appointed Director of Student Activities in 1966. _ Prior to coming to Lee in 1959, Mr. England taught science and coached football at Chamberlin and Bell Vocational Schools in Washington, D.C. Asa student at George WashingtonUniversity from 1949 to 1953, Mr. England excelled as a __ varsity defensive end, being selected to the All Southern Conference Team and being awarded the Outstanding Senior Trophy. _ Under the guidance and direction of Jim England, Lee’s coaches and teams have captured dozens of district, regional, and state crowns in baseball, wrestling, track, boys’ and girls’ soccer, football, and boys’ and girls’ basketball. __ Fewmen have devoted as much time and energy toa school program as Jim England. He was first to arrive at games and the last to leave. His involvement was not only with athletics but with all aspects of student activities. Jim had a great deal of love for the students at Lee High School. It was this love for and attachment to the students that kept him smiling while Ss worked for their benefit often as long as sixteen hours a day. Jim England will be remembered for the values he exhibited in his life. He was a beloved husband and father, tected and outstanding teacher and administrator, and friend to all who worked in education with him. He devoted his life to people and education. For his success, his devotion to students, we dedicate the 1983 Shield to Mr. James W. England. : e é fe Hi lh Pas celebrate Pod Twenty- Sith ay Le, Springfield s first high school. i. , n B6 5 8 a we look b back A, weseea Genes of Lancer spirit — wee, fives YCUrs: fb le ard (gold. In THE PRINCIPAL FORCE Robert Phipps The opportunity to have been involved at the beginning and to share in the founding of Robert E. Lee High School has provided me with a rewarding professional and personal experience which will always be one of my cherished memories. Congratulations to the Lee High School family on the occasion of the silver anniversary celebration. Best wishes for continued success and growth as we look forward to the next twenty-five years and the Golden Anniversary. William Jackson I came to Lee High School in 1970 to begin my first princi- palship and I could not have been assigned to a better school. Eleven of the best years of my life were spent with the faculty, students, and staff. The friendships developed over those years will always be remembered and cherished. Thanks, Lee, for 11 great years and Happy 25th. William Partish: 2 -37 See Upon first entering Lee in the summer of 1958, I was filled with enthusiasm. Everything was new — the faculty, the stu- dents, and the building! Everyone was excited and_ full” OF: dreams. Many of the dreams have come to fruition and I join. the : faculty, students, and alumni in the joy of celebrating, Lee’ be he success for a quarter of a century. . teal ak Oo Frank Elliot On behalf of all the current and former teachers and staff of Lee High School, a special thank you to all the many students and patrons we have been privileged to serve over the past 2 5 years. Your support has made this school progressively stronger each year. I believe this year, our 25th, will be recorded in history as one of the best of those years. STERLING SERVICE ROBERT cE. LEE HIGH SCHOOL On these pages we honor those teachers who have enlightened the students of Lee High School for the past twenty years. It is these teachers who have been at Lee through the thick and thin of daily life and in their many years of devoted service have become an integral part of this school. We are truly blessed to have such people working in our presence and it is for them that we set aside these pages. : Hunter Benedict Jack Baumgartner Estil Brown 25 years at Lee 25 years at Lee 25 years at Lee ac art Instructor, Advisor, and Friend Math Lancer Mens Club, The Senior Class Mary Worsham Edward Tarlosky 21 years at Lee. . 23 years at Lee English English © F.B: L.A. Each club exemplified their inter- pretation of the past 25 years at Lee. The 5 judges chose the Keyettes as the first place winner, rewarding them with 75 dollars. The game was sponsored by the Girls Ath- letic Association. The game was anything but boring. The scoring was close at all times. The most spectacular play occured early in the Ist quarter. Junior, Benita Brown ran for an 80 yard touchdown, after senior, Karen Colvin had pre- viously made a touchdown. Like any other football game there were injuries. Both ju- niors and seniors were injured. Junior, Kim Rice, broke her nose early in the 2nd quarter. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance. M a! The evening had much to offer, promising young cou- ples a night to remember. For in- stance, if a couple wanted to “get hitched”, “Marryin’ Sam” was around for the memorable occasion. The night was full of laughter and enjoyment, and if the “marrying” couples found things not to work out — everything was formally dissolved at midnight. The highlight, as al- ways, was the ceremony of the crowning of the King and his court. This year's Sadie Hawkins King was John DiGuilian. The girls “enjoyed” the chance to ask out that special guy they had their eye on. They finally learned why guys are so nervous about picking a girl up and taking her out to dinner. Paying for their meal may have been something they werent used to, but most girls en- joyed the opportunity. _. ” po . 7 Ra | ——— j . a i: The annual Mr. Lancer contest was a huge success this year. The theme was fairy tales, so this year’s Mr. Lancer, Chris Bolt, was crowned Mr. Knight in Shining Armor. The first runner-up was John Diguilian and the second runner-up was John Newell. Other awards were presented to John Natoli for Mr. Legs, Mike Foss for Mr. Congeniality and John Digiulian was named Mr. Originality for his Sunkist soda can costume. The award given to the best underclassman, the Judges’ Award, was presented to Rodney Rose. Lancer Girls’ Club chose Brian Dooling and Bruce Kaiser as their Girls’ Choice recipients on the basis of their questionnaires. The emcees for the even- ings festivities were the president and vice president of L.G.C., Elizabeth Grzymala and Courtney Sullivan. Everyone seems to get fired up as they crowd into the gym and await the start. Pep rallies consist of the cheerleaders doing cheers and leading their class, drill team performances, the band playing the Lancer fight song and the introduction of the various team players. Pep rallies this year promoted the kind of spirit that Lee High School is known for. This year’s Varsity squad was chosen the previous spring, so they began cheering for the spring sports season. During the summer, they practiced three mornings a week and then they attended the National Cheerleaders Association clinic at the University of Richmond. At camp they received four blue ribbons, a spirit stick, and runner-up in the Award of Excellence competition. Thru the year the cheerleaders held dinners for the athletic teams, kidnapped them and baked cakes for the players before games. This year began the new rule of representation at all varsity athletic events so the cheerleaders put in a lot of time representing the school. Being the school’s only full year sport held a lot of responsibility which the cheerleaders acknowledged and accepted as one of the various activi ties of being a cheerleader. For the first time the yearbook period was combined with a Commercial Art class. I thank Mr. Hammonds for enduring this sometimes frustrating “situation” which became, after many hours of organization, an integral part of the yearbook production. Equally deserving many thanks is the entire Shield Staff, for tolerating and understanding the many hours of work needed to produce a yearbook. I can honestly and proudly say that the goal we established at the first of the year — to make our twenty-fifth anniversary edition a very special yearbook — has been achieved. For the class of 83 this yearbook represents just a handful of our high school memories — a keepsake that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. Thanks again to all who contributed. — Cindi Cisek, editor-in-chief. The pep-rally page goes into effect. Mike Foss and Catherine Harmony.
