LEE HIGH SCHOOL SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA VOLUME TEN OUR DEDICATION The “Shield Staff, on behalf of the student body of Robert E. Lee High School, is proud to dedicate this, our decade issue, to Col. Robbins. He has been instrumental in the publication of the “Shield for three years as well as a teacher of Earth Science for five years. Col. Robbins is very much a part of Lee. His familiar face can be found al¬ most anywhere in our school. Col. Robbins can be found teaching in room 222, eating lunch with the other science teachers in room 239, working in the IBM room, helping out in the yearbook room, or walking the halls with his camera during 6th period. As yearbook advisor, Col. Robbins has given up many nights and weekends of relaxation to produce the finest year¬ book possible for our student body. We thank you. Col. Robbins. 4 TEN LONG YEARS This, the tenth anniversary of Robert E. Lee High School, was the year of the Mardis Gras. The 1967-68 school year was the most colorful in Lee ' s history. Almost everything this year was centered around the occassion of our tenth anniversary; Homecoming, Mardis Gras week, and the spirit of the student body. Accordingly, the “Shield” uses the tenth anniversary of Robert E. Lee High School as its theme for its decade issue. We hope that we have captured the excitement and the most memorable moments of this year. There was something else that was extra-special this year: the student body. All of us worked hard to make this the most outstanding year in Robert E. Lee ' s history. We added the extra measure of enthusiasm, the extra work, and made this an extra colorful year. T hus was the 1967-68 school year, the tenth anniversary, the year of the Mardis Gras, a year which will not soon be forgotten. 5 ISOMER ETTES k aoMise WE HOPE THAT YOU HAVE HAD A COLORFUL TENTH ANNIVERSARY YEAR CLASSES 10 SENIOR CLASS As freshmen we faced Cold, cramped up Quonset huts, A large supply of elevator passes and Directions to the swimming pool and Large seniors. Then in our sophomore year we Joined all the clubs not open to freshmen, Held the traditional Sophomore Talent Show Were victorious in the Freshmen-Sophomore Softball game. In our third year of bedlam The shortened school day was a blessing We ordered class rings and chose the Raccoon as our class symbol. We bravely faced the Seniors in traditional Competition, but lost. Camelot found itself in our cafeteria. As seniors we have Braved the ordeal of College Boards, Traveled to Annapolis in place of our Senior Class trip. Haunted the halls on Halloween, Enjoyed the privilege of having our own Class lounge, Raised money in the Slave Auction and Proved ourselves capable of facing the Events and problems of whatever may be. Our future. PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT SECRETARY Jan Barrett HISTORIAN Don Majeske 12 Pat Bernal Jim Eggleston TREASURER Bill Whitley OFFICERS SPONSORS Miss Worsham, Col. With the sound of a bell midshipmen poured out of buildings and swarmed over the campus. The Class of ' 68 had arrived at Annapolis. From there on, everything was a blur of hot dogs, Navy, banners and big yellow mums. Cannons blew, teepees went up in flames, and white hats flew in the air. After a long, hot day in the bleachers the cavalcade returned, somewhat subdued, but still thinking Navy the best. HALLOWEEN Baby dolls, hippies, bums and horrors Even a T.V. box and a Lyndon Johnson were running around. Weird apparitions, alias seniors, giggled and cackled as they roamed in the halls. But at the last sound of the bell, they quietly faded into big yellow buses. 17 Rebecca Cobb Adams Steven Dexter Adams Melissa Louise Agnew Ligia Maria Aguilar Maureen Albaugh Donald Jack Albert Rebecca Adams - “Cissy” - Art Guild 3,4; Homecoming Attendant 1; Homecoming Float 1; SCA Rep. 4; Jr. Prom; SCA Cabinet 3. The buying power of the class ring seems to be going down. To this, the close of a “sheltered” life; The morning bus rides, the routine schedule, the cafeteria. To our high school dances, plays, football games, rings . . . To a bright new future awaiting us. To us, to life. We try harder.” 43 Juicy’s Harem Bloomers and suspenders are on the rise this year O.K., Becky. Missing: Monica Albertolli (Hist.). Three years ago, as freshmen, we entered, Beginning as the underclass but Not the underdog. As juniors we have preserved the Traditional Junior-Senior rivalry, Acting as slaves for losing to the Seniors in the Homecoming float Competition, And continuing to fight the seniors in The basketball rivalry. Finally, we have earned the pride of Ordering class rings and enjoying the Thrill of our Junior Prom. Lee High School opened its doors in the fall of 1958. This is our tenth year —a decade of progress. Our students entered their classrooms while the sounds of hammers and saws echoed in the background. We have come a long way since that warm September day in 1958. During those early days our school was nothing more than a building and many individual teachers and students. Through the years we have developed into a large surburban high school with a broad curriculum, capable faculty and an unusually fine student body. Robert E. Lee High School graduates are gen erally prepared for colleges and universities all over the world and Lee alumni are enrolled in such in¬ stitutions not only in this country but around the world. Let us hope our next ten years will be even more eventful. William C. Parrish Principal 118 MR.
