Koehler for his devo¬ tion to our school by dedicating our yearbook to him. Colonel Koehler has been with Lee since her conception, always do¬ ing more than was expected of him. He has a unique philosophy on teaching, one in which every one of his students feels honor-bound to work to capacity. Colonel Koehler is one of the few teachers who con¬ vinces his students that he is genu¬ inely concerned with their problems. COLONEL M. A. KOEHLER DEDICATION 18 FOREWORD During the school year 1960-1961, Lee High School saw many changes. The curriculum offered more subjects, a new interest in dubs developed, and wider participation in all activities was encouraged with enthusiastic interest resulting. Efforts were made to provide special educational opportunities such as the New York trip sponsored by the Art Guild. Ail of these components were coordinated and joined into a united attempt to enact a program which would produce the best product imaginable—well-rounded indi¬ viduals aided in developing their special talents and yet given a basic background of knowledge on which to build; individuals worthy of respect and continuous growth. The production of such persons has been and will be the aim of all those connected with Lee High School. Lee High School has come a long way since that September opening day in 1958. We entered a building that was still under construction. The building was completed very shortly, but we had just begun to build a school. What the students do at Lee High School today will stand as a reminder to students of tomorrow. We are now beginning to see the results of ou efforts. A genuine school spirit is emerging and with it there appears to be an appreciation for individual responsibility. As you, the seniors, go your varied ways, I trust that Lee High School will have prepared you in some measure for that which you will face. To all the students I extend the services of my office and my best wishes. William C. The season highlight was the victory over McLean which came after the Highlanders nearly beat powerful Annan- dale. Lee fared well against big teams Hammond, Fair¬ fax and W-L and we completely outclassed Homecoming rival Falls Church, 21-0. Our bad games came in the form of losses to Osbourn, Mt. Vernon, Stuart, Madison, and Groveton. Outstanding individual heroics included sopho¬ more Jim Barrett ' s three touchdown passes in the Mc¬ Lean game, a feat which made him The Washington Post ' s M.V.P. in Virginia for the week; rambling Andy Higham ' s crashing runs, with his sparkling 55 yard TD run against Fairfax; Rommie Spates ' kicking eight out of ten extra points for a sparkling 80%; Ted Clarke ' s jarring tackles which placed him on everybody ' s all- star teams; and Harry Lelands ' fine catches which gave him an honorable mention on the Northern Virginia all-star squad. Lee ' s Marching Band performs at halftime. Lee ' s player is forced over the sideline by a Falls Church man. ■ k Most Valuable Player presentation went to Ted Clarke. Ted also was awarded the Lineman of the Year trophy; Andy Higham received Back of the Year Honors and Fred Reever got the Sportsmanship Award. Junior Jim Norton was selected the captain for the 1961 squad. Varsity coaches besides Baumgardner were Jim England, defensive boss; and Bob Evans, end and line coach. Tom Hyer and Estil Brown coached the Junior Varsity and 9th grade teams respectively. Farris and Clarke await signal to enter game. 155 Although they won only five games this year, Lee ' s basketball team had its best season in the school ' s three year history. The Lancers com¬ piled a 5-14 record and wound up in a tie for eleventh place in the 14 team Northern Virginia Group I League. Lee played erratically throughout most of the season, usually doing their best against the league powerhouses and their worst against the lesser teams, but they began playing like a winner near the end of the season. Probably the most exciting occasion for Lancer basketball fans was the 51-50 upset victory over Washington-Lee, won by Butch Dieterle ' s jump shot in the final three seconds. 157 Equally thrilling but with a heart-breaking outcome, was the 62-61 sudden death overtime loss to the Annandale Atoms. And not to be soon forgotten is Mt. Vernon ' s Marty Lentz who rewrote Virginia record books and scored 40 points in each of his two appearances against Lee. 158 PAUL DAM ROW Besides W-L, the Lancers defeated Osbourn, Hammond, McLean and George Washington. Lee averaged 51.6 points per game to their opponents ' 59.4. Their top scoring effort was 70 points in a losing cause against Madison while their lowest output was 33 against Stuart. Averagewise, Dieterle led the team with a 14.5 average. Bob Wills had 12.2 points per game and Paul Damrow aver¬ aged 11.1.
