CLASS HISTORY Three years ago a group of wide-eyed Sophomores entered the halls of Robert E. Lee High School to begin three of the most memorable years of their lives. These Sophomores were we, the graduating class of l957. Orientation Day initiated us into a whirl of new activities, new friends, and new books. At this time we were welcomed by our Principal Mr. Gilbert, Assistant Principal, Mr. Lockett, and the then Dean of Girls, Mrs. Culp. Our enthusiasm was boundless for all the new experiences which lay before us. Pep rallies, football games, Y-Teens and Hi-Y, and Forensic Frolics filled us with excitement. We chose Dot Donahue and John Donahoo to lead us through the year. How quickly the year passed! Before we knew it summer vacation was upon us, and we found ourselves looking forward to another year at Lee. Entering our Junior year fresh from a restful summer, we found a freshly paint- ed school awaiting us. We also found a new Dean of Girls, Mrs. Virgie Cone, who replaced Mrs. Culp, retiring Dean, and a new Assistant Principal, Mr. B. B. Mendoza, who replaced Mr. Lockett, now Principal of Andrew Jackson High School. To begin the year right we elected as our leaders Linda Wahl and John Donahoo. With these two in the lead, we surged forward with renewed spirit. The Junior Girls' and Junior Boys' Fashion Shows, the highlight of the year, brought many sighs and laughs. The Miss Lee High Contest, sponsored by the Student Council, was a spectacle of beauty. We soon found that our studying had not been in vain, for a number of our class- mates were rewarded with bids to the National Honor Society. The school was a whirl of excitement as the petitions were signed and campaign speeches were made for the Student Council elections. George Gabel was victorious! We ended our Junior year at Lee with the most wonderful dance of all - the Junior-Senior Prom. September, 1956! The long anticipated year finally arrived, we were now Seniors. We chose the following leaders: Clayton Pickels, President of the Senior class, Barbara Coppins, President of the Senior Girls' Club, and David Shoaf, Presi- dent of the Senior Boys' Club. The year began with a record-breaking calendar drive sponsored by the Senior Class. The Traveler and Blue and Gray staffs started the tedious iobs of producing our excellent newspaper and annual. Our football team was one to be proud of and we were. The defeat of the Jackson Tigers on Thanksgiving Day gained for us the title of City Champions and the opportunity to play in the Meninak Charity game. This exciting day came to a close with the annual Thanks- giving Dance sponsored by the Student Council. After two weeks of hard practice and learning the game of football, the girls fought to a scoreless tie in the Powder- Puff game. The basketball season, too, was a big success. The perfect introduction to spring was produced by the Band and Glee Club concerts. A touch of fun and fancy was added by the Senior Girls' Jubilee, the Senior Fellows' Vodvil, and the Spring Dance, sponsored by the Senior Class. The dramatic productions of the Stage Crew and Senior Class will always be remembered. As our final year comes to a close with Class Night and then Graduation, we realize that we have gained much from these past three years. Margaret West Secretary, Senior Class
