CLASS HISTORY In September of 1953 we the class of 56 entered Robert E Lee and thus began our hugh school career On Oruentatuon Day we were welcomed to Lee by our Pruncupal Mr Gulbert Assustant Pruncupal Mr Lockett and Dean of Gurls Mrs Culp After we had become faurly accustomed to our new school we elected Barbara Hazouru and Davud Bedell to lead us through our sophomore year And what a year ut wasl Pep rollues football games the Forensuc Frolucs and the Student Councul Thanksguvung Dance kept us un a whurl of excutement After the Chrustmas holudays whuch afforded a much needed rest we thrulled to the strauns of The Merry Wudow presented to us by the Lee chorus As the year came to a close we found ourselves lookung forward to another step un our uourney toward graduatuon When September of 1954 funally came the doors of Lee were agaun thrown wude and we bore the proud tutle of lunuors Susue Lupscomb and Ward Matthews were chosen to lead us through our second year un Lee Although we had to settle down to keep up wuth Junuor Englush we found tume to partucupate un the many actuvutues of our unterest The Calendar nomunatuons and selectuons and the Muss lee Hugh Contest sponsored by the Student Councul were followed by the Junuor Gurls and Junuor Boys fashuon shows hughlughted bythe untroductuon of theur mascots Anne Easterday and Frank Surface Then we realuzed that all our efforts had not been un vaun as twenty eught of our number were unducted unto the Natuonal Honor Socuety A buzz of excutement surrounded the Student Councul electuons and when ut was all over Eugene Katubah came out vuctoruous After the sleepless nughts connected wuth the dreaded Junuor Themes we welcomed the Junuor Senuor Prom as a wonderful way to end a wonderful year Senuorsl One more year and our funal effort toward the goal of graduatuon wull be completed Thus year brought about a host of changes When we returned to Lee un September after a long summer we found the unteruor of our school covered wuth a much needed new coat of paunt But thus was lust one of the changes When Mr Lockett our assustant pruncupal became pruncupal of Andrew Jackson Hugh School he was replaced by Mr Mendoza our Student Councul Sponsor Also the vacancy left by Mrs Culp returung as Dean of Gurls at Lee after twenty eught years of servuce was fulled by Mrs Cone who was prevuously co sponsor of the Senuor Class After we had aduusted ourselves to these changes we elected the person whom we thought most worthy to lead us through our last campaugn Davud Bedell To work wuth hum Susue Lupscomb and Frank Surface were chosen as presudents of the Senuor Gurls and Senuor Boys Clubs The yearbook and newspaper staffs started work on theur publucatuons and our senuor year had really begun We started the football season off wuth renewed school spurut and ended ut wuth the Thanksguvung Day Game complete wuth sponsors and the dance that nught Although the football season was offucually over the senuor gurls once agaun held the Powder Puff game Termunat ung wuth our wunnung the cuty champuonshup the basketball season was a bug success The scene changed from athletuc to dramatuc as the stagecrew presented The Luttle Dog Laughed and the Senuor Class pre sented uts annual play Agaun we thrulled to the Glee Clubs presentatuon thus tume The Purates of Penzance Announcung the arruval of sprung was the Annual Sprung Dance sponsored by the Senuor Class To add a note of fun the Senuor Gurls Jubulee and the Senuor Fellows Vodvulle were guven each featurung the presentatuon of the mascots Ward Matthews and Anne Easterday respectuvely Then we were on the last stretch of our uourney More seruously than ever we performed our dutues and readued ourselves for the funal step graduatuon Before we knew ut the funal banquets were beung guven Class Nught was upon us and then the pruze for whuch we have struved these three years graduatuon Upon receuvung our duplomas, we the class of l956 bud farewell to Robert E Lee our Alma Mater Anne Dezell Sr Class Secretary u . 1 1 - 1 - I 1 ' 1 1 ' ' 1 ' 1 1 1 . , , - uu - nu , . 1 1 .
