SS HISTIIHY The fall of 1948 49 was a memorable one for Gllberts Harbor for lt was then that the good shrp 1951 salled mto Port Robert E Lee and was quarantrned rn Orrentatlon The Captaxn was chosen ln record trme and xt was under the pxlotage of Phoebe Jackson and Dan Scarborough and the sponsorshrp of Mrs Rowell and Mr Montgomery that we braved the storms of Sophomore year Prmcrpal Joseph W Gllbert was there glvrng good humored and fatherly advlce and Dean of Grrls Marguerlte P Culp wxth characterlstrc gentleness and porse as sured us of her frrendshxp and understandmg The new Inter com System gave us the feelrng that Mr Grlbert was always navxgatmg wrth us and plottmg our course We watched the varsrty buxldrng take shape the pavrng of the street South of the school and the reclalmlng of the wastelands to the North We are grateful to the Dads Club the P T A and the school board for these xmprovements We were 1ust xnterested bystanders watchxnq the faculty greats , the Jaunty Junlors the Solemn Senrors ,the lettermen, andthe glamour grrls When the roll of 49 50 was taken, we found that a few of us were mlssrng Our pxlots thts year were Vlfglnla Zxpperer and Dana Shrres and we were sponsored by Mrss Broward and Mrss Durrance respectlvely The grrls staged a wonderful Srxth Annual Jumor Grrls Fashlon Show, matched by the equally successful Junror Boys Fashron Show In the fleld of athletxcs lt was evldent from the begxnnmg that we would make a record that would be easlly remembered and ln short trme we caused the whole hlgh school to s1t up and take notice The honored custom of the .Tumor Senlor Prom was the blg soclal event of thrs year On a hurricane wrnd we rode lnto our semor year and the exhllaratmg experxence of belng leaders IH the school s llfe made the long months of hard work pass swrftly The Semor Glrls Club chose Cecella Todd to p1lot them and Mrs Brockett to keep them on thelr course The Senror Fellows selected B1'l Sahlle and accordxng to time honored custom our Assrstant Prmcrpal Mr Locket! stood by Thrs Senror year the grrls and boys 1o1ned forces and worked together as a class under the leadershlp of a chosen group Through the untmng efforts of our beloved sponsor Mrss Dorothy Thomas we sarled mto the fmanclal world rn a brg way The school calendar was or1g1 nated It proved to be an outstandxng success and the proceeds of thxs success enabled us to ald vrsual educatron wlth the purchase of a new motxon ptcture proyector and accessorres The Semor Glrls Jubrlee won tremendous acclaxm rn November We establlshed, we hope, a custom rn the Semor Dxnner Dance grven at the Naval Arr Statron whxch proved to be the gayest party of the Chrrstmas season In the sprung the Senror Fellows Club Vodvxl scored a smash hxt, way out front rn orrgmaltty We ended our years achxevements rn the publxshmg of our Annual THE BLUE AND GRAY, the staff turned out a magnrfrcent edxtron In the mxdst of all the 1oys and excrtments of Commencement week we were overpowered wrth our debt of gratxtude to our school As we look behrnd us and see the successron of adversmes and achrevements we are glad that we went rnto them all whole heartedly and w1th the rrght sp1r1t and we trust that the lessons we have had IH the past may serve as gurde lmes rn the future that we may make the most of our remarnrng opportunrtres, and that each and every one of us be ready to stand up for the courage of hrs convrctlons and wlth only honor love, and respect for Lee tn our hearts when the good shxp fmally welghs anchor rn June 1951 1. - 1 .1 - . ,, u ' I , . . . 1, - - ,I . . . . . , , . .
