SEHIUHS llflllltlll Hlllflllllll Hllll CHHIBBEHH lSlHllllS Central America consists ot the republics of Guatemala, Honduras, Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and the colony ot British Honduras. Its popula- tion of over six million is composed largely ot native Indians, Mestizos, and Spaniards. Although these Central-American republics are still in a backward state, the ship canal across Panama brought them into greater prominence commercially. These republics are rich in minerals such as gold, silver, and copper, scarcely touched by mining projects, because Europeans and Americans have not cared to risk their lives to establish industries, but the wonders that have been accomplished in the Canal Zone in Panama show what may some time be done to make even the damp coast regions ot the other republics healthful, In the blue waters of the Caribbean there is a group of islands known as the Antilles, the most important ot which are Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, and Porto Rico. Cuba has been poetically called the Pearl ot the Antilles because ot its beauty and natural wealth. She has been independent since l898. Jamaica, the largest and most important ot the Antilles, is an island paradise of tropical vegetation be- longing to Great Britain. The republic ot Haiti is the first state to be constitutionally governed by negroes. Porto Rico is a beautiful and productive island of the Antilles, which became a possession of the United States in i898
