There were four huge walls to climb before the soldiers had any chance of victory. On the other side of the fourth wall was a rainbow and a pot of gold for each soldier who pulled through safely. Since the soldiers were divided it was hard for each group to understand the other. The Hrst year was spent in teaching the young soldiers the ways of the army. Sports and games helped to make the army life more enjoyable. Fortu- nately, there were no great battles to be fought. The first great wall was scaled. Tvhe regiments were united at the beginning of the second year under the command of Gen- eral Lee H. Edwards at Fort Senior High. The army was not troubled with many battles the first part of the year so the soldiers spent their time getting in good condition by practicing comrade- ship and co-operation. Alas! just before the end of the year the Great Terror Depression made a sudden attack. Several battles were lost in- cluding Creative Arts and Gym, but by a happy stroke of fate the battle Commercial Course was won. The soldiers were able to scale the second great wall because splendid co-operation reigned. At the beginning of the third year Depression again attacked the Army, which was once more .-,. ,r .. divided under the joint command of General Edwards and General Anderson. Through the never-tiring efforts of the Colonels and Lieuten- ants-teachers and parents-the Army was able to thrive and gain a foothold. With the supplies of Commercial Course and Music so low the Army had to become thrifty. The soldiers at last climbed the third great wall. f The enemy, Depression, was pushed back and the Army was able to be reunited at Fort Senior High at the beginning of the fourth year. The way was hard and the weather cold but the fa- mous spirit of the Army enabled everyone to con- quer all difficulties. lt was during the year that two of the best beloved soldiers fell in the act of service, Diary Lunceford and Susie Me- bane. A gate was found in the fourth wall and the Army could see the rainbow with its pot of gold. This led them on to the fight for Victory. The Army was at last able to obtain its goal, for slowly the gate of the fourth wall was swing- ing open. Through this the soldiers marched and beheld the glorious rainbow. Each soldier received his pot of gold in the form of a Diploma as an introduction to the Great Wide World. To those who follow, these conquering veter- ans wish to say: Fight for U.i'hl1lJ.V right In order to obtain victory. -HELEN GUTHRIE. , .1 , 1. ,gf 1 . y. il-,Jimi , .. qu' .i-LW ' .L , QW:-Q. This description might well be applied to the spirit which has prevailed in Asheville High School. It was here when We entered, it is here to an ev-en greater extent now that we are about to leave. Cnr student body has never turned its back to any task. When we were deprived of many of our courses by the lack of necessary funds, we marched breast forward and did not give up. We never doubted that the clouds would break, and we won-won back some, at least, of those things that we could have lost forever had we not known that wrong would not triumph, though right were worsted. Again, when our class, then Juniors, was faced with the problem of the junior-Senior ,Banquet and it seemed very improbable that we could have a banquet at all, our leaders came forward and once more we marched breast forward to victory. ln our Senior year we attempted to raise money for our Annual, but up until the last it appeared as if our splendid spirit had failed us. However, we rose after seeming to fall-fought better after being baffled, and emerged from our project successful. Handicapped though we were, we are now able to send THE l-lI1.I.n1LLv to press, longer by sixteen pages than last year's memory book, containing complete club and athletic sections, and reflecting the spirit that has been back of everything we have undertaken to accomplish. To lylrs. Elliott, Nliss Barnett, Nliss Cooke, bliss Garner, Nliss Nannie Nloore, bliss Smith, and lyliss Wolfe, thc faculty advisors of the Annual staff, and to their student assistants, we wish to extend the gratitude of the Senior Class of ,35 for the generosity of their aid. Next we wish to thank Mr. Edwards for his efforts in sponsoring a Lyceum Course, without which this Year Book could not have been published, and the merchants and business concerns who so graciously donated space for the advertisements which contributed much to the success of the performances. Also we feel greatly indebted to the Seniors of ,34 who, through untiring effort and sacrifice, published a memory book last year and ther-efore made it possible for us to continue this year with THE HILLBILLY publication. We now offer our Year Book to Asheville High School and we sincerely hope that each student will receive as much pleasure from reading it as we did from compiling it, and in the years to come will value it highly as a remembrance of his sojourn in this school. Now, as our days in Asheville High draw to a close, we wish to leave with you our Fare-u'vll! a -word that must be, and lmth been: A sound which makes us Zingerg-yet-farewellf' -WALTER WATTS. . 3.5.1 .af an . .,, -p A We A ' as' .-1,44 ,. ,-mfr. v,qvQ'x f,:,-t ZEN? x ,Q-.-is , -,yi 1 ,,. ,vryrprv C' l 'bn W 'W f-- f '- 224, -' -'4 V ' + i 3' V .v , . vfsiu- wr. fi.-.fmt A.. 3 ' aw I l-1 4444-4 IE IH If 14.44.15 ll 4L1Lw llillhillg Staff WALTER WATTS ........,........,.....,. ,.... Come, sail with us on this luxurious liner and we will see what has become of our fellow classmates of ,35. Mayor Charles Folsom of New York City, Senator Guy Crawford of North Carolina, and Secretary of the Interior Bill Mulvaney, have just given us a farewell rec-eption which was broadcast over an international hook-up with the co-operation of the International Broadcast- ing Company, whose president is our old friend, Emmett Davis. We see in the crowd at the dock Miss Sylvia Twiford, who is leaving for Italy to make her Italian debut under the direction of her famous teacher, Miss Anne Ellison. Hello! There's Tom Harrison, rich inventor of the electric nut cracker. He seems to be looking for some one . . Ah! he has found her. lt is Kathryn Goode, his fiancee. She and her friend, Elsie Allport, Walkathon Champion, are going to Europe for a short va- cation. The tremendous crowd gathered here at the dock is being held back by secret service men, thr-ee of whom we recognize to be VVoodrow Williams, Kenneth Wight and Durham lpock. There goes the whistle! The gang plank is being pulled up. Oh, Heavens! We left two of our bags ashore, but here is the helpful Mr. jack Mcjunkin who will soon recover them for US. Having got settled in our staterooms and meeting up with the steward, French lVlcCain, we receive an invitation to dine at the Captain's table, and who should the Captain be but Jeff- erson Davis Dermid, the third! Others at the table are Robert Kennerly, first mate, Ilma La Bar Dermid, the Captain's wife, Burton Kinney, noted author, Gene Pope, former Yale football star, Betty Brookshire, sculptressg Elizabeth Howell, movie star, and Allen Patterson, fa- mous animal trainer. After dinner we all drift into the ballroom to enjoy dancing to the delightful rhythm of Pokey . . ,,,-,L I L!-J-'-i-1i Ax By AND NIARY ' LEE SALLEY Coleman and his Atlantican Orchestra. His crooner, Reece Teague, thrills everyone with his mellow voice, and the blues singer, Pauline War- ren, adds much to the evening. Next we view a perfect floor show presented by Sara Sm-ith and Pauline Witherspoori, those two hilarious Com- ediennes. The next morning we attended a lecture on French given by Miss Deborah Rubin, who is assisting Miss Polly Leake in writing a French grammar. just a minute, folks! Klan overboard! Klan overboard! It was none other than Jack Arm- strong who said that he was getting away from a girl who was trying to propose to him. A bad case of seasickness developed among the passengers and the ship's doctor, Howell Young, had many patients on the second day out. In glancing over the passenger list we noted the following: Adele Simpson, Lawrence Nic- Dowell, Bill Spake, Charles Miller, Annette Mehaffey, Marjory Cooper, Jack Maney, Arnold Lifter, Dora Lance, Edyth Koontz, Tom jones, Eva King, Gladys Johnson, Nell lkloore, lVIil- dred Scharff, Theresa Rogers, Harry Robin, Maze! Radford, and Elizabeth lwoseley. Captain Dermid kindly introduced us to his crew, among whom were Ralph Ashworth, Troy Parham, james Wamsley, Woodrow Womack Tom Siler, Allwin Schnieder and Ed Herman. We enjoyed a good movie at the ship's the- atre, starring Miss lVIartha Reese and the great screen lover, Gordon Burns. On the third day out, much happened to ex- cite us. Lieutenant N. A. Hall flew over the ship with his mechanic. Bill Garmany, They showered the decks with roses and Arnold Swaini' cigars for the passengers. Not long after this we were hailed by two shipwrecked sailors who had been marooned on a desert island for two years. They turned out to be Harmon Lee and jim Beacham. We secured a New York newspaper and set- tled ourselves in deck chairs to read the news of the day. Miles Falls, Charles Lord, T' er, ana Blonnie Hilton. As we glances over the sto ' quotations we saw that Sta-Stuck Cornplas Inc., had risen to 551720 a share and we realizei that Carol Crawford, president of the organiza- tion, had become the millionaire he dreamed of becoming way back in 1935. Speaking of mil- lionaires, one of these and his wife passed us about this time. It was Wesley Dennis and his wife, the former Miss Louise Northcott. Wesley is quite handsome and has been beseiged by tooth- paste companies to exhibit his pearly white teeth for an advertisemlent. By the way, his dentist is Herbert Wadopian. But going back to our paper-on the society page is an account of a ball given by hir. and Mrs. Woodrow Bartlett, the latter being the former Miss Anna Jean Fox. The ball was in honor of Gene Blackwell, mu- sician. The guest list included N. C. Bradford, Robert Baumberger, Jack Tagga1't, Bill Clem- ents, lklary Caroline Townsend, Louise White, Aloe VVatkins, Nlildred Doe, Jack Duckett, and Mary Gray Withers, all former classmates of ours. That afternoon we indulged in a game of deck tennis. Playing on the court next to us was Mr. Kendall Leeman, national tennis champion. He was matched against Bill Barrett, an up and coming tennis star of today. 'The ship's basketball team gave a fine per- formance against a team made up of passengers. On the ship's team were Rex Dowtin, Donnie Gearing, Kenneth Kille, John lN'IcRary, and jack Maney. On the passenger's team were john Howell, Fred Cothran, jerry Robinson, Ed Do- lan, and Eugene Reams. Ambassador Robert Wells and wife, the for- mer Miss Joyce Moore, were especially interest- ed in this game. Mr. Wells assisted the time- keeper, A. J. Coffey, during the game. Everyone was greatly interested in the spec- tacular robbery which occurred that night. Miss Mary Ellen Harrison was robbed of 325,000 worth of jewelry. She, a very wealthy actress, is accompanied on this trip by her three secre- taries, Dot Morgan, Elizabeth Kale, and Mild- red Snipes. Her hairdressers are Eleanor llflc- Elwain and Ruth Misenhiemer. This morning Miss Harrison's business manager, Fred Osborne, by the following reporters: Pearft: James Brown, and Joe Clontz, of the orb Dirt Cscandal sheet? which has as its , Walter Watts. lVIr. Osborne refuses to , anything but that the thief is still at large and the aid of Scotland Yard will be secured upon landing i F A d, ,Tiles Sumner, pro- fessor of Criminol t N. Y. U., is working hard to obtain clues. The actress has a nc' monkey, presented to her by R. Crownov. explorer, and it is thought that it it-- sornething to do with the case. Ahoy, mates, there's land! We docked .. Liverpool and walked down the gangplank and saw Harry Pratt scanning the crowd for his wife. Gladys Morton Pratt. After buying some pea- nuts from a peanut vendor, Richard Wolfe, we took a taxi to the Liverpool airport, and just did make connection with our plane for London. The pilot was Jack Otto and the pretty and charming hostess was our great friend and pal, Nora Raysor. A list of the passengers included Mary Epps, Harriet Walkup, Mary Duckett, Ernest Franklin, W. Ausburn, Louise Ram- seur, Harry Belk, Elizabeth Ingle, Genevieve Metcalf, Margy Schartle, Evelyn Pruett, Sara Setzer, Annie Mae Stone, and Mary Ellen Barker. Landing in London a little late, having been lost in a fog, we met Hal Randolph and his wife, nee Miss Erline Duncan. They took us to the lovely mansion of Dr. and Mrs. Howard Ander- son, the latter being the former Miss Evelyn Adams. Mrs. Anderson entertained us that eve- ning with a lovely dinner party. Those attend- ing were Norman Sultan, Leah Robinson, Katie Belle Sabiston, Helen Peterson, Elizabeth Mose- ley, Edna Mottern, Marle Brendle, Fred Coth- ran, Reuben Coman, Bill Brown, and Jack Maney. Tom Byrd unfortunately spilled his soup on .Betsy Burginys lovely evening frock de- signed by Satenik Nahikian. After dinner three gifted butlers, Arnold lVIcSween, Charles Grigs- by, and Joe LeBlanc sang several original se- lections. Then we all attended the opening per- formance of 'lTreat 'Em Rough,', featuring Miss Betty Troy Csuccessor to lN'Iae Westb and Mr. John Aiken as her leading man. Landing at .Brest, France, we took a train direct to Paris. En route We met bliss Isabel Cooke, acting as chaperone to a group of young ladies, among whom Were Dot McRary, Fred- erica Clodfelter, Julia Cliff, Alma Brooks, Vir- ginia Howard, Edith Hine, Evelyn Kramer, Eleanor Livingston, and Anthea Alexander. We soon arrived in Paris and proceeded to the American Embassy as guests of Ambassador Bill Bunn and his wife, Lillian lvloore Bunn. YVC immediately went on a shopping tour. Among the shops patronized was that of Madenioiselle Thelma Lipe. Her attractive salon designed by Shannon Coward, was completely filled with noted Parisiens. Her charming manikins were: Mildred Pittinger, Vivian Harr, Doris Ford, Sara Gurley, Phyllis Chandley, Gladys johnson, and ,Blanche llflaney. On a tour of the city we saw many wonderful sights. One of these was llflargaret Ryanls Doggy Doggery. Assisting her in it were Marion Padgett, lwildred Mooneyham, Rachel Morrison, Wiiifred Parham, and Billy Broome. Our guides were Charles Cloninger and John lN'IcHarge. Mr. Dan Hill, famous author, has just re- leased another intellectual novel entiled How To Catch Toadsfl This book was published by the Lewis and Lanford Publishing Company in Paris. Mr. Hill is touring the country with his old pal, Jeffroy Wilson-their chauffeur being Charles Tison. While in Paris we attended the 'flsle de Capri Night Club, and whom should we see but Bev- erly Clark parked on the piano singing How High I Am. She was accompanied by the charm- . . 1... Fhe chief cook and bottle Washer was ,Benny Cothran. Other people stopping at the inn were: Mary Alice Whitton, Elizabeth Wood, and Ma- rian Williams. At the time that we arrived a Swiss Cheese Marathoii was going on at the inn. Those participating were: lklilly Howell, Mar- garet Tate, and Elizabeth Swicegood. lX'Iiss Howell contend-ed the contest was unfair because the cheese had holes in it. We enjoyed, among other things, mountain climbing and skiing. When climbing a moutain one day and looking through our field glasses we spotted Doris Weaver, Marjorie Whisnant, Ruth White, and John Dozier, all climbing the neigh- borning mountains. Also accompanying them was Oscar Wilson. 'lihe reason we spotted them so easily was John Dozierls red cap. We skiied down the mountain with Dot Ward, world famous champion skiier. Betty Jean Hen- ninger and Gertie Taylor tripped and both rolled down the mountain. Ar the foot of the mountain in a little Swiss village, we heard a very peculiar but familiar sounding laugh and upon rounding a corner we found lvfargaret Calfee and Nancy Caldwell playing tit-tat-toe on the side of a whitewashed church. CShades of our unholy ancestorslj Mag- gie is Amelia Earhart's successor in flying and she also holds the world's championship in tit- tat-toeing. She hopped us right across the ole ocean in her trusty little McCanless model plane. And were we glad to see the Statue of Liberty! Hi, ole Girl! So, adieu, adieu, classmates, adieu.
