Many things have been happening in this department, and more is planned for the future. This past summer, six juniors and seniors received a National Science Foundation-Student Originated Studies KNSF-SOS! Grant for the amount of S10,000. Sandra Shepard tproject directorl, Ron Dotson, Doug Rosendale, Mike Wheat, Vickie Bivens, and Ronnie Burton spent twelve weeks working on their research project entitled, Amelioration of Adriamycin Toxicity by Butylated Hydroxytoluene: Mechanism of Action. With the aid of 500 mice, this team conducted a study on the drug Adriamycin, which is used in the chemotherapy treatment of cancer. In December, Sandra Shepard and Mike Wheat traveled to Washington, D. C. to present the results of the research. The success of these and other students lies not only in their own exceptional talents, but also in the expertise and dedication of Mrs. Lois Beach, the department chairman, and her colleagues in the department. An important development in this department is the addition of a new area of study. The Board of Directors has approved the initiation of a four-year generic which will be a Bachelor of Science in Nursing tB. S. NJ. Dr. Robert O'Bannon is attending UTK and working for a Masters degree in Nursing in order to help launch this valuable new program. Hcodemlcs 'x ?.
