Fall Festival and Lee Day provide opportunities for visitors to see Lee's showcase of musical talents. Participating in these musical programs are such groups as Promise, Lee Singers, Ladies of Lee and Campus Choir. Reporting, photography, broad- casting, advertising, public rela- tions .... They are just a few of the important aspects of mass communications .... just a few of the many opportunities rapid- ly opening up for Christian young people in an interesting and chal- lenging field. The faculty and ad- ministration recognize this, so, beginning in Fall, 1980, pending board approval, Lee College stu- dents will, for the first time, be able to major in communication. Dr. Robert Humbertson, Chair- man of the Department of Lan- guages, initiated the program in january, 1978, and has been work- Righti The Spanish Club promotes interest in Spanish cultures as well as the Spanish language. Humbertson, along with Dr. Carolyn Dirksen, Dr. Sabord Woods tboth English pro- fessorsl and a part-time instructor in journalism and broadcasting will compose the faculty for the required courses. The communication program will be an interdisciplinary major in- volving three new courses in com- munication theory and existing courses in writing, speech, educa- tion, psychology, sociology, drama, music, and business communica- tion for a total of thirty-six hours teighteen of those in upper divi- sion coursesj. Humbertson also in- dicated that an internship program is a very good possibility. This could include opportunities at local radio stations, North Cleveland Church of God, and Forward in Faith. Student interest in the proposed communication major has been substantial. National statistics indi- cate an increasing demand for tal- ented professional individuals trained in communication skills. The Music Department Presents . . . Performances by the music department this year ranged from a Canadian tour to a Charlie Brown musical. This fall the Lee Singers toured Vancouver, Canada and the Ladies of Lee toured the southeast- ern United States. Other groups such as the music-drama workshop and Campus Choir provided the campus with four musicals. The workshop presented You're a Good Man Charlie Brown in the fall and Music Man in the spring. The Campus Choir celebrated Christ- mas with the musical Why lsn't Everybody Praising the Lord? During spring semester they performed an Easter cantata. In addition to the choirs' tours and musicals, each semester, at Homecoming and Lee Day, a combined concert is given featuring them and a guest group. Besides the music festivals, two additional perfor- mances are presented each year featuring the jazz band and the woodwind ensemble. Department Hwcird A Music Education major, james Duckworth was the recipient of the Department of Music and Fine Arts Award. He was involved in music through Campus Choir and MENC-NACM and, in his senior year, was a member of Alpha Chi Honor Society and SNEA.
