Lee Award was Dani Allred. Awarded to the most out- standing graduating senior, this honor was initiated in 1968, and is determined each year by the Lee College faculty. Dani, a his- tory major from Natchez, Mississippi, was also selected for Who ' s Who. Displaying academic excellence throughout her aca- demic career at Lee, she graduated one semester early in December of 1976. That same semester she was editor of the CLAR- ION. Both her junior and senior years were spent in active roles in the Lee Col- lege Student Government Association. - . ■ KeithMunford Recipient of Tharp Award Keith Munford has been named as the 1977 winner of the Tharp Award, which is the most esteemed honor directly associated with the Church of God. Chosen by the faculty the award states that this particular senior is most likely to make the great- est contribution from his graduating class to the church. Although Keith has been gifted with intelligence, his multiple activ- ities have revealed his unique motivation which every great worker of God must possess. A Biblical education major, Keith also pastored Sunshiners Chapel and was president of Upsilon Xi. Along with this award, Keith was selected to Who ' s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. Seniors Merit At the end of each year the faculty within each department looks at the grad- uating class and reflects upon certain individuals— their diligence and their de- sire for academic excellence. Through careful consideration, the faculty attempts to name the outstanding senior in each department; subsequently, the names are submitted to the Academic Council for confirmation. Congratulations go to those seniors who have earnestly worked during their aca- demic career. The Departmental Award winners did not sacrifice many sleepless nights of study to be honored, but it was because of his love for learning that he stayed in while others were out — and for this very reason, honors followed. FLORIE BROWN Senior Class 65 ELAINE GURLEY Senior Class «v i, ,, 4 P 1 66 Athletics EDITOR: DENNIS WHITTER 67 Viking Coach Earl Rowan and the Lee Vikings experienced the pains of rebuilding years as they played to a 10-18 record during the 1976- 77 season. Assisted by Larry Carpenter, Coach Rowan led his team in some impressive victories and suffered several setbacks in last shot losses. The outstanding play of Senior Co-Captain Phil Bazel who led the Lee team in scoring sparked the club to late season wins and a near upset of rival Tennessee Temple. One of the big wins of the year ivas the win over Olivet Nazarene. Herkley, Steele and Lattimore worked to close in on Temple. 68 Basketball 1976-77 Sam Herkley kept the Vikings in several games with his team-leading rebounding and sophomore David Lattimore gave the stalwart fans many thrills including an outstanding effort against Covenant where he made 1 5 of 19 field goal attempts. Paul Walker, the Co-Captain guard who has started for three straight years, led the team in assists and had some outstanding games. Sam Wills and Randy Steele shared play- ing time, contributing almost 300 points be- tween them. Rocky Wilson, Keith Lewis and Voin Calhoun rounded out a fine team. Junior guard Paul Walker served as co-captain for the 1976-77 Vikings. In his second year as head coach, Earl Rowan (left) was assisted by Larry Carpenter. Sophomore David Lattimore is one of the outstanding Viking players. 69 Offense Co-Captains Paul Walker and Phil Basel brought the Vikings close to a Temple win in February. Forward Sam Herkley played several games with an injured back, but led the Vikings in rebounding. Senior Phil Bazel paced the team in scoring much of the year. 70 Defense Defensive play was impressive in the win over Olivet Nazarene. Sam Wills ' quickness helped him into the starting line-up. David Lattimore thrilled the fans with plays like this. 71 There Were Disappointments Disappointment reflected on the face of Paul Walker. Coach Rowan ponders the rough season and contemplates next year. 72 ...and Sam Herkley played aggressively. The Vikings won the Lee Invitational Tournament in November. 73 Darlena Hammonds and Vickie Cochran helped keep spirits high despite a February loss to Temple. 1976-77 CHEERLEADERS: Pat Dunn — Captain Renee Holman — Co-Captain Vickie Cochran Darlena Hammonds Carol James Gayle Robinson Sharon Echols — Mascot Freshman Gayle Robinson and Captain Pat Dunn watch the action. 74 The loss to Bryan seemed to be disheartening for all. Viking Cheerleaders Darlena Hammonds finds encouragement in an offensive surge. Cheerleaders received help from Adrian Walston at most games. Co-Captain Renee Holman watches the scoreboard as time runs out. 75 Viking Baseball Team Registers ■ ' 4 :: m Keith Mills was not only one of the top pitchers in the SCAC, but delivered at the plate with powerful hits such as this one that traveled 400 feet. Coach Earl Rowan had much to be proud of with his 1977 Viking Baseball squad. Bouncing back from several close losses in the early going, the Vikings won many tough contests to give an impressive showing. An Easter tour of Florida gave oppor- tunity for the Lee team to play opponents from out of the Lee District. Players such as Gary Stone, Gary Sams and Mark Wil- liams sparked the Vikings to key wins. I ' . ,; ■ ' ' - r. : i The shortstop position was well-anchored by star hitter Larry Carpenter, seen here on the double play pivot against Temple. Lee Cross Country Boasts For the past few years, the Lee College Cross Country team has been one of the better teams in the entire NCCAA. Once again this year, the runners from Lee distinguished themselves by winning important meets. Not- able among their victories was an early season triumph over Tennessee Temple. Senior and Captain Greg Carter provided fine leadership and once again proved that he was one of the top long distance runners in the area. Along with Carter, Ed Tuers and Dannv Shriver excelled in several meets and showed great talent. Greg Carter closed out a fine Cross Country career at Lee with a good season. Danny Shriver, Ed Tuers and Greg Carter left these Bryan runners far behind. 78 Highly Talented Runners The Shriver-Tuers-Carter combo kept Lee College Cross Country high in league standings. Randy White did many hours of roadwork in preparation for the season. ■,- %:■■ ™ ■ ■ : %: Senior Mike McMahan found early season practices to be exhausting. 79 1977 Tennis Team Tennis team members found that it took long hours of hard ivork to become a winning team. Dr. Marvin Taylor, head coach of the Lee Tennis Team, took a young and some- what inexperienced group of tennis play- ers and through the course of a season, whipped them into top shape. The team suffered early setbacks, but diligent work and concentration helped them to give many fine showings before the summer came. Dennis Walters and Dennis Hurst were two of Coach Taylor ' s best players in league and non-league play. Dennis Ford ' s two-handed backhand stroke came in handy when he found himself under pressure. 80 Faced Tough Opposition Rick Burrell of North Carolina learned to stretch and reach in order to get to shots like this one. The serve must be perfect and so takes a lot of practice. 81 MCAA Provides Year -Round iLTZlZX t ZumTB a Zl t!Zy Th ° mPSOn - «  « «. ' rry Lovry, ana KeitH Mer The Men ' s Christian Athletic Association is the largest club on the Lee Campus. In 1976-77 over 300 male students participated in the intra- mural program. MCAA President Dennis Whitter, and Intra- mural director Ken Walston worked together to upgrade the organization of the men ' s leagues. The MCAA sponsored a September back to school Softball tournament which was won by the Alumni team. Throughout the year, tourna- ments in various sports kept enthusiasm at a high pitch. All-star games, championship playoffs and trophies were only a small portion of the work of MCAA members. Larry Lowry was an all-star selection at cornerback for four years. 82 Athletic Opportunities Basketball was one important part of the late night schedule at Lee during the winter months. Charlie Ford from Georgia and Jimmy Coffelt of Alabama spent spring afternoons playing MCAA softball. Him Intramural sports such as basketball also allowed alumni Sam Wills was one of the many intramural officials pro- of Lee to participate. vided by MCAA. 83 Intramural Dominated by Upsilon Upsilon Xi won the intramural crown for the second time in two years. The 5 team intramural league spent the fall months battling for the title. Quarterback Rusty Creel led the Upsilon team to key wins over Singers, Alumni and Freshmen and then met VINDAGUA in the playoff finals. Upsilon ' s only loss was against VINDAGUA in the first game of the year. Chip Pace quarterbacked the Vindagua team to within one point with seconds remaining, but at the final gun, it was Upsilon who gained the championship. Tim Hamm ' s kickoff and defensive play helped the Singers to a winning season. Tight defense by Delwyn Smith caused this pass to Steve Thompson to drop incomplete. Steve Thompson races against Randy Higgenbotham en route to his 3rd touchdown. Mike Wheat led the blocking on this end run by Don Worley. 84 Jk ,, ■M Keith Merchant made the All Star team at halfback for Upsilon. Junior Steve Madison turned this carry into a long touchdown run. j . VINDAGUA lost in the finals to Upsilon by one touchdown. 85 Intramural Basketball Wis Tough Under the guiding of Intramural Di- rector Ken Walston, the men of Lee Col- lege enjoyed a winter of fine quality bas- ketball. Teams representing various clubs on campus, the faculty, staff and even alumni met almost nightly in the Lee gym for the league games and finally the playoffs. In the championship game, the Facul- ty-Staff team, with much help from assis- tant basketball coach Larry Carpenter, walked away with the trophy. Talent in the MCAA basketball league was such that several of the players were chosen to play with the Lee Junior Varsity team on several occasions. Some of the more outstanding players were Tom Madden, Joe Mango, Danny Moore and Steve Madison. Alumnus Nick Humble was a talented rebounder as seen in this early season game. Aggressive defense made the games all the more exciting: 86 Joe Mango overcame knee problems to finish among the top scorers in MCAA basketball. Former Viking star Danny Moore dominated several games with his shooting and rebounding abilities. Chess Club and the Faculty-Staff team start their play-off game with the traditional center jump. 87 MCA A Softball Featured A back-to-school softball tournament helped many newcomers get acquainted with other students. During the first week of school, the MCA A sponsored a softball tournament for interest- ed teams. Throughout the week, teams battled, and one by one were eliminated. In the cham- pionship game, it was DHD versus the Alumni team. In a three game series, the Alumni team was victorius and claimed the tournament title. Harold Franks, better known for his All-Star football abil- ities, clutches his cap while heading for third base. 88 Talented Players and Teams In the spring regular season, there were several fine teams. The North Carolina All-Stars led by Tommy Madden and Roc- ky Wilson highlighted the season along with Upsilon, the Sixers, Rotaract, Freshmen, Chi and others. A vote by representatives from each team selected an all-star team which invited outside teams to play in exhibition games. The season did not end until the last week of school when the cham- pionship was decided by a three same tournament between two top teams. Jimmy Coffelt comes in to bat and Flay Burroughs heads for the field after the third out. The Intramural softball championship was not decided until the tournament during the last week of school. 89 Womeris Christian ' : J . 1,4 j | Three girl ' s teams competed for awards in softball com- petition during the last weeks of the spring semester. Tan Woodard was the number one pitcher for Delta Zeta Tau in WCAA softball. , %■ ■ ■ The batter, Cindy Futral, from Huntsville, Alabama was one of the more versatile WCAA athletes. 90 Athletic Association Lee College hosted several girl ' s intercollegiate games in the winter months, including this close contest. Many ladies at Lee participated with great effort and enthusiasm in the 1976-77 WCAA program. From flag football where the Upper- classmemteam was victorious to softball in the spring, where the rivalries were even greater, the ladies showed that they hold athletics in high esteem. For the first time ever, Lee College had an intercollegiate girl ' s basketball team. A brief schedule allowed the girls to gain valuable experience for future seasons. Carol Bennick, the WCAA President pro- vided great leadership for an eager group of women athletes. Sophomore Denise Smith, of Chattanooga, Tennessee represented WCAA in the Parade of Favorites Pageant. 91 i i 4 -. ; x Organizations EDITOR: DARLENA HAMMONDS 93 ; i ■ i ¥ E V E I f . 1% •i. Throughout the year they traveled thousands of miles spreading the Word of God. This year, in addition to visits to local convalescent homes, jails and hospitals, they enjoyed a Christmas banquet in December and an Awards banquet in April. 95 Misswns Club l Emphasized The members of the Missions Club seek to promote missions throughout the world and to keep Christians aware of the urgency of furthering the kingdom of God. In an effort to raise funds for World Missions the organization spon- sors annually a Walkathon. This year they sponsored a film festival and a series of seminars. Church missions leaders shared their enthusiasm and experience. Members listened intently to the proceedings of a meeting. 96 Christian Service Promoted by I PXCi Tact President Greg Carter conducted an executive committee meeting. T.A.C.T. is organized to provide voluntary Christian service for Lee College students who are interested in the field of Christian Edu- cation. During the 1976-77 academic year members held over fifteen weekend seminars and conducted twenty workshops. They have plans for a special summer seminar to the mission states of the Church of God. Danny Lloyd participated in a TACT service project. Members demonstrated the purposes and goals of the organization. 97 Lee Singers Display The choir participated in a community youth rally. In their fifteenth year of activ- ity, the Lee Singers maintained their traditionally active sched- ule. Dr. Delton Alford, founder of the choir, continued in his capacity as conductor and coordi- nator. Assisting Dr. Alford was Danny Murray. Included in their performances this year were a tour of Europe, several tours in the United States, two appear- ances with the Chattanooga Sym- phony Orchestra, and appear- ances in conventions, churches, and schools. In September 1976, they were presented at Royal Albert Hall in London. The Sing- ers were also the featured group in both the Fall and Spring Mu- sicales here at Lee College. Singers Second Edition also kept a fast pace this year. 98 Musical Excellence 1 1 ft C At the Fall Festival many Homecoming guests came to enjoy an evening of good music. vf f. - . ; T ie Singers exhibited versatility in their performances. Campus Choir Develops Musically The Campus Choir, directed by Dr. David Horton, is the largest musical performing group on campus. It is composed of students from all major areas of study and is not limited by audition. The choir does not tour, but rather directs its abilities toward performances on campus. One of their major performances this year was the production of Honnegar ' s King David, complete with instrumentation and visuals. Dr. David Horton directs the Campus Choir during a spirited rehearsal. 102 This year the Evangelistic Sing- ers were recognized as an official campus performing organization. Their director was James Paige. They enjoyed many musical ex- periences this year touring in Flor- ida, singing in area churches, and contributing to chapel worship. Singers The choir backs up Janice Attaway in a solo spot. Become More Actively Involved Aua Evangelistic Singers were a vital part of many chapel services. 103 Lee Band Has New Conductor The Lee Band and the Lee Players were under the direction of Sonny Chambley. Mr. Chambley has worked diligently with the Lee Band to pre- pare them for performances. The band involves many students with instrumental abilities and talents. One band member, Charles Brant, a trombonist, was the recipient of the award given by the Department of Music and Fine Arts to the department ' s outstanding graduating senior.
