Students learned in this year ' s Black Emphasis Week to do away with preju- dices held from a lack of understand- ing. Through a special chapel service, we became aware of the achievements which somehow go unnoticed in Amer- ican culture. This week was not an effort to synthesize differing cultures, but was an attempt to point to cultural distinctions and to become proud of them. Awareness of individual worth and a reassurance of progress was the theme for the Black-White Banquet held in the college cafeteria. 37 AViMng victory, anm) queen, ardwtarrm Homecoming 1972 generated excitement, involvement, and en- thusiastic participation. Tull explains Convocation procedures to Reverend Boatwright and Reverend Kelly before a service. Traditionally, Lee College has two religious convocations an- nually. This year was- no differ- ent. Reverend R. B. Thomas and Reverend F. J. May were the morning and evening speakers for the Fall Convocation. The Reverends Garold Boatwright and B. L. Kelly were the speakers for the Spring Convocation. Reverend B. L. Kelly takes time out to get to know Lee student, Darrell Rice. 48 Religious emphasis took on a new aspect this year with the ad- dition of Church Heritage Week to the spiritual activities. Each semester one of the pioneers in the Church of God was brought to campus for a week of services. Reverend Houston R. Morehead, former General Overseer of the Church of God, and Reverend Paul H. Walker, noted for pio- neering missions work in the Da- kotas, were the special guests. Reverend Houston R. Morehead speaks at the first Heritage Week. Chapel serves as an important and spiritually rewarding as- pect of students lives. In addi- tion to the weekly Sunday night chapel services, religious and academic services were held three times during the week in tlie sclwol auditorium. Arriving late for chapel, Betty Mudd and Gaye Hudson choose to wait in the lobby rather than to disturb the service. David Horton leads the congregation in singing a hymn during chapel. 54 of campus Mfe Students and faculty alike attend the weekly services. Diane Lay gives her chapel slip to Charteen Bowles. Students used the time prior to the invocation to catch up on their reading or to finish talking with friends. 55 ( ' mJ. The last week of school ivas spent in taking final exams. Dave Helton and Pam Gibson bid a final good-bye before they leave for the summer vacation. Thecydewas completedmMay When not studying for finals, students were packing to leave. Tom Tioquen found that his job did not end with the close of the school year. 56 Through with his finals, Rod Cannon demon- strates his liberation from the grind. The week of May 14 was the last week of school. Students found that there just was not enough time to do all that was necessary. They had to study for and take their exams. TJiey had to pack to leave. And also, they had to say goodbye to their friends. Inspitc of it all, the stu- dents at Lee managed to survive. Eventually, the memories of this year will begin to fade. 57 ffimtm Reflect on your achievements. Reflect on the times you did what you had to do instead of what you wanted to do. An informal party at the home of Dr. and Mrs. James L. Slay was the kick-off event for the contestants, escorts, and judges. The judges, Beecher Hunter, chairman, Richard Norman, H. Bernard Dixon, Regina Tullock, and Dawn Wooderson, questioned each contestant individually at the formal interview. The ladies were asked questions relating to personal interests and opin- ions on current events. Re- hearsals and more rehearsals for the upcoming pageant night filled the week to capacity. My sincere thanks go to, first of all, a fantastic sponsor, Paul Conn. He ■ : ■ ■;..■ ' ' :■■ ' ' ■ : ■ ' • ■. ■■■■ has taken time from a busy personal career to share in the production of this yearbook. His ideas were exciting; his criticism was invaluable. The section edi- tors were tops. They took the initiative to work on their assignments with little or no help from me. Ted Barrineau, our staff photog- rapher, practically lived in the darkroom for several weeks. His tremendous drive to be creative served as a model for the entire staff. The combined fruits of our labors belong to you now. We pre- sent them to you with pride and a little part of ourselves.
