Of our dreams and desires Let us speak and share life — That today ' we ' might know And call each other friend. — Mike Gibson 60182 A Tribute to R. Leonard Carroll CLEVELAND, TENNESSEE— 1 27 72— Church of God General Overseer, R. Leonard Carroll is dead. Death came to the 51 -year-old chief of America ' s oldest Pentecostal denomination at 10:20 p.m., January 26, 1972, following a massive heart attack. That was how the press release began that announced to the world outside the church that its head was dead — it announced what most of the church already knew — many had been awakened even in distant areas by hurried phone calls early in the pre-dawn hours of 1 27 72. I learned of his death after arriving at class the next morning to find the professor as I entered talking in muf- fled tones of the death of his colleague, Dr. Carroll. Being young in the church I only began to feel the loss to the leadership of the denomination when Dr. Don Aultman was unable to continue with the announced lecture. h.(iJL -3-(X 2 ' KteP. LD w mi R. Leonard Carroll was born October 4, 1920, in Franklin County Georgia. He was or- dained in the church in 1946, received a B.A. from Furman University and an M.S. and Ed.D. from the University of Tennessee. When he died this year, he, as a local paper edi- torialized, left Cleveland and this world physically, but the results of his life and work re- main indelibly stamped in hu- man hearts and church philos- ophy. Conn Litt. D., President Showing a genuine interest in students has been a salient feature of Dr. Conn ' s adminis- tration. During his second term as president of Lee College, he has promoted reforms which are vital to the school ' s con- tinued success. He exhibits a concern for academic excel- lence and integrity in spiritual culture. Dr. Conn ' s feelings about Lee College are summed up in this statement: Lee is completely contemporary, aware of our exciting times, alive with the opportunities of today. It is a school of action and opportunity. 25 DONALD S. AULTMAN, B.A., Ed.D. Vice-President and Dean of the College Dr. Don Aultman serves the college in the capacity of Vice- President and Dean of the College with what seems a genuine concern for the needs of the student. His career at Lee indicates his desire to stay close to the mainstream of student life. An Associate Professor of Psychology as well, Dr. Aultman functions in a tri-sided role, also remaining close to the church as a minister. As vice-president he has pioneered the academic growth of the institution: working on programs leading to accreditation by the Southern Association, increased course offerings, and the 4-1-4 program to be instituted next year. 26 Administrative Council STANLEY BUTLER, B.S., M.A., Ed.S., Litt.D. Van Watkins meets Karen Hobgood and de- cides baseball isn ' t that important. 54 ma Last day of relaxation for Jerry McClain before those long days begin. Serratia wonders what the first year will bring her. After the confusion of registra- tion and the long hours of frustra- tion that comes with unpacking there is a settling down ... a be- ginning of a routine. Life is really beginning for the new year. New friends are made. Old friends get reacquainted. The studying begins. The laughter and tears all come and go. Mitch Maloney gives Sharon Henry a word of advice on her first day. 55 Sleeping, waking up, getting dressed, drinking coffee are the small things and can be as memorable as the large things. Our day begins with a bed to make, a face to wash and a dress to iron. Dr. Fleming and her students spend the morning in lab. Few students make it to breakfast. 56 Day Starts at 7:00 a. m, Smile! Going to class isn ' t that bad. The class is more enjoyable than the atmosphere. 57 After chapel everyone heads for the post office. Waiting in the lunch line is a good time for studying or rapping. 58 The day goes on. The relaxation of the cafeteria and stimulation of the classroom has made everyone more alert. There are more people seen and more smiles. A quick stop in the canteen to see what ' s going on. 59 Crowds Between the Classes Music students enjoy a short tune. Students chat about the days events. 60 A stop in the TV room for relaxation between classes. Girl talk. 61 Betty Mudd rehearses before her lesson. 62 Times To Be Alone Bob Laughlin, can you study in there? Although in crowds you find much entertainment, relaxa- tion and friendships, there are times everyone wants to be alone. A time to meditate on the past or the future ... a time to daydream ... a time to get those important things done. . . . At any rate, Life is but a day at most. 73 Two ' s company A time for us. 74 Annual Christmas Party Santa and his reindeer visit Lee College. The Parade being the highpoint of the social year at the college, spurred them on. Each girl with the cooperation of her sponsoring organi- zation, her escort, and admirers was responsible for her own props and her talent. The girls in turn were offered management by the pageant director, Jan Mullinax, who with the cooperation of the stage crew and the sound and lighting personnel were responsible for the management of the whole night ' s activities. The work of many people was combined to produce a one night spectacular which was the result of many months planning, and a week of sleepless nights. m ft ' 4 1 I ft If -M i ff B I ? - lur s ' Kr A JO 1 sS. The year began with the selection of Miss Joan Davis as the sweetheart of Alpha Gamma Chi. Then, in keeping with tradition, Chi hosted its annual moonlight cruise down the Tennessee River for the newcomers to the Lee campus. Homecoming brought forth a burst of activities and all night work marathons for the Chi guys which culminated in Chi ' s homecoming project of two giant archways leading to the Lee Campus. The second semester saw Chi introducing a new ' event to the Lee campus, donkey basketball. The event, held in the Lee gym, was a basketball game played entirely on the backs of live donkeys. The evening was capped off by a Chi victory over the Lee Faculty. The real highlight of the semester, however, was the presence of Andre Crouch and the Disciples and the Imperials in a joint concert in April. These two groups were co-sponsored on the Lee campus by the ladies of Delta ' Zeta Tau and the men of Alpha Gamma Chi. It was been a very busy year. But, it has proven to be one of great success and enjoyment for the men of Alpha Gamma Chi. Pi Delta Omicron endeavors to aid its constituency in the following manner: it shall encourage the pas- tor to lead his flock with the staff of righteousness; the teacher to hold high the torch of knowledge for the enlightenment of his pupils; the steward to give of his best in the promotion of God ' s kingdom, with the Bible as his guide. 142 Alpha Chi The officers of Alpha Chi feel at home in the library. Pettitt Sixty-two years ago, R. M. Evans, a retired Methodist preacher who had received the bap- tism of the Holy Spirit and joined the Church of God, drove his wagon 300 miles to Miami, sold the mules to buy passage, and sailed to Nassau, Bahamas, to become the first foreign missionary of the Church of God. God still calls men and women into His work of evangelizing the world. And men today, like Evans, are still willing to give up everything to go for God. God wants you as part of his missions enter- prise — either to go or to send. Church of God World Missions congratulates you upon the completion of your year at Lee and looks forward to your working with us as we take the gospel into all the world. Unlike last year however this production has been more hurried and as a result shows it. For that I must accept complete responsibility. As I leave Lee this year I cannot help but look back over the shelves of Vindagua s which have recorded her progress. This yearbook has been the recorder of its prog- ress, its failings and just the everyday actions of its people. Several people contributed a large amount of their time to the construction of this book. I would like to thank B. J. Golden for her work, Phyllis Lane for her devoted service, Jan Green for her concern, Dean Cleghorn for his friendship and a person better known to me as J.J.,, without whom the production of the 1972 Vindagua would not have been possible. ru (iMbU 270 em i 271 When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face; And bending down beside the glowing bars, Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. — Yeats 272 IIM!nIim™)t,ft ES0URCE CENTER 3 1838 00093 2125 NOT TO BE TAKEN FROM THIS ROOM NOT TO BE TAKEN OUT Lee College Library Cleveland, Tennesse 37311
