As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a whole- some discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, not less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt, the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be; and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. 20 21 I will not be satisfied for Lee to be a run-of-the-mill Christian liberal arts school. We will undertake any pro- gram that will produce the kind of academic excellence our students need. Dr. Charles W. Conn, President 22 23 ■The College Seeks A New Direction LEE GETS A NEW PRESIDENT Dr. Charles W. Conn assumed the of- fice of President of Lee College in the Fall of 1970. He is faced with the neces- sary task of expanding Lee College to meet the demanding aspects of a changing world. Dr. Conn has proven himself a capable leader in many areas of the church, most recently serving as General Overseer of the Church of God. Exhibiting a genuine concern for the students, Dr. Conn seems to have grasped the reins of government firmly in his hand. We, the Student Body of Lee College, welcome Dr. Charles W. Conn as our new President. VICE-PRESIDENT AULTMAN LEADS COLLEGE ACADEMICALLY This was the third year of service to Lee College for Vice-President Donald S. Aultman. At the time of his appoint- ment to Lee College, the school was restructured into a four-year Liberal Arts College with three divisions: Arts and Sciences, Religion, and Teacher Education. Dr. Aultman helped im- mensely in piloting the new program toward full accreditation by the South- ern Association of Colleges and Sec- ondary Schools. This year, Dr. Aultman was selected for inclusion in the twelfth edition of AMERICAN MEN OF SCI- ENCE, BEHAVORIAL SCIENCE DIVI- SION. Dr. Charles Conn, PRESIDENT ADMINISTRATIVE POWER KEPT IN PERSPECTIVE As Vice-President Aultman stated in a recent interview, Probably the most demanding aspect of college adminis- tration is to keep the needs of all areas of campus life in perspective. Students, faculty, administration, and the Board of Directors all have points of view to which one must respond. Appropriate reaction to each of these domains of academia is essential to responsible leadership. 25 -Donald S. Aultman, Vice-President and Dean of the College. 26 Responsible student participation in the affairs of the school is being encour- aged. Active concern has been shown in the administration to create more dialogue between students and itself, as is shown in the following statement by the Vice-President and Dean of Lee College. The Lee College student is an un- usual person. He is generally equal in intelligence and maturity to other col- lege students I have met, but is far above the average in dedication. I am constantly amazed at the tremendous spirit, loyalty, and cooperativeness of Lee College students. On the subject of student power, I would suggest that a first question which must be considered is whether the college will take the place of the parent while the student is in college residence. It appears that the parents of Lee students expect the col- Dr. Horace Ward, J r., DEAN OF STUDENTS Stanley Butler, DEAN OF ADMISSIONS AND REGISTRAR 27 David Lemons, DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR Don Pemberton, BUSINESS MANAGER 28 Hubert P. Accepting this re- sponsibility, I believe that the college should encourage student participation in all areas of academe from curriculum planning to life in the residence hall. Students must be involved in meaning- ful decision making if the educational process is to have maximum relevance to their college experience. A STANDARD OF CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT IDEALIZED The College will seek to continue its academic growth by stabilizing the cur- riculum and maintaining an openness to innovation and change. HORACE WARD DIRECTS STUDENT SERVICES Dr. Horace Ward, Jr. has served Lee College as Dean of Students for two years. Dr. Ward has stated that he has had ample opportunity to observe the strength of character, willingness to bear responsibility, and the social con- cern of the students. Furthermore, he feels that in all these matters, Lee Col- lege students are truly impressive. While still a young man, he has received many honors. Most recently he was se- lected for inclusion in the 12th edition of AMERICAN MEN OF SCIENCE, BE- HAVORIAL SCIENCE DIVISION. ADMISSIONS DIRECTED BY DR. BUTLER Dr. Stanley Butler serves as Dean of Admissions. He says that Lee must con- tinue to be sensitive to the needs of our students. Dr. Butler wants to make the necessary academic changes that would better equip the graduates of Lee for their goals in life. BOARD OF DIRECTORS LEGISLATE PROGRESS The Board of Directors of Lee College is the true governing force of the School. Twelve men form the Board to rect the business and decide the poli- cies of our college. Lynwood Maddox, practicing lawyer from Atlanta, Georgia, gifted speaker, enthusiastic lay witness for Christ, presents obvious personal and professional talents needed in an expanding institution. Thurman Curt- singer, from Lawter, Oklahoma, suc- cessful businessman, faithful church- man, a long time supporter of Lee, is the man most likely to see the school in terms of efficiency. Louis H. Cross, pastor of Tremont Avenue, Greenville, S. C, a progressive but dedicated in- dividualist, is bold enough to speak but fair enough to listen. Progress has been particularly noticeable in the Science Department. The Lee College science program was recently divided into two full departments: physical science and biological science. The physical sci- ence department offers foundation courses for students specializing in physical science or mathematics. The biological science department offers majors in biological science. 48 A student in a Botany Lab course prepares a specimen for microscopic study. Members of Pi Delta Omi- cron, the Religion Division honor society, acknowledge allegiance with the last clause of that famous statement, and as a result of their diligence in study, they are de- serving recipients of membership of Pi Delta Omicron. This society exists not only for the purpose of developing Christian character through the promotion of scholar- ship, but also for the cultivation of responsibility, and for the fos- terage of spiritual fellowship. Pi Delta Omicron endeavors to aid its contsituency in the follow- ing manner: it shall encourage the pastor to lead his flock with the staff of righteousness; the teacher to hold high the torch of knowl- edge for the enlightment of his pu- pils; the steward to give of his best in the promotion of God ' s king- dom, with the Bible as his guide. Many of our past and present repre- sentatives recall their days of preparation at Lee College. What greater gift could one give to his Master than complete dedication to the call of Missions? Here, there shall be none. I can only give thanks for those who have helped me in the production of a small piece of history, the 1971 Vindagua. I must give my heartfelt thanks to Honette Echols, Mrs. Lois Beach, Mr. Humbertson (sponsors of the book), and to Dr. Don Aultman, the administrative representative. To Charles McKinney and Flavius Lee of the Church of God Publishing House; to my staff members, espe- cially Stephen Thayer, Dean Cleghorn, Helen Foley, Jym Agee, and Phyllis Lane; and to the students, Faculty, and Administration of Lee College; without the help of whom this book could not have become what it is today, the credit must be given for a job well done.
