But we have an answer — a challenge! Man has risen from stagnation to movement, From darkness to light, From ignorance to knowledge. Through this example, Can we not take hope in our future? Should we not redouble our efforts? There are more fields to conquer, More light to shed, More knowledge to gain; Yet there is a certain haziness Still with us. Viiidagua means Looking through a glass darkly. Isn ' t it time man stopped thinking And achieving through one? Our Nation Rises to the Challenge. « m ,+ . r ' ■% £? aSSJSSSSj C o - - .Zs xfc ■ •  Sss?r i - This book is dedicated to America ' s space Achievements. For years the country planned; the world watched, and the universe wait- ed. A level of attainment was reached. We had the ability; all we needed was the challenge. Provoked by Russian success, President John F. Kennedy gave us the summons in his inaugural address. The country answered. Three men were chosen. In a cockle shell boat they sailed a sea no one had sailed, and they walked a land that had felt no man ' s touch. They had heard our summons and had answered our call. Products of a force, the American Society, these three men were molded by a tradition. Competitive in style, unifying in spirit, our unquenched curiosity and fortitude made possible their quest. Complete devotion to God and country strengthened the hearts of the three men that initiated man ' s conquest of the boundless universe. The country came together, prayed, watched and waited for their safe re- turn. Not merely for daring, but be- cause they brought us all closer to- gether, we dedicate this 1970 Vindagua to Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin Aldrin. lU J The first challenge to the student is to recognize the quest . . . then rise to it - in spirituality . . . Cross, now in his fourth term as President of Lee College, has perhaps guided the greatest period of growth for this institution. Under his supervision, Lee College has added a new men ' s dormitory as well as a new women ' s dormitory. Under the Administration of Dr. Cross, Lee College has become a fully accredited in- stitution. When on a brisk De- cember afternoon, the South- ern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools informed Lee College that it had re- ceived its accreditation, the entire student body and facul- ty rejoiced as well as Dr. Cross. Proven to be a leader in the religious realm, Dr. James A. Cross has also shown himself to be an excellent educational administrator. 20 Vice-President Donald Aultman !|ffcy I fflKj • . Tenseness, uncertainty, and exuber- ance provided the keynote of their opening days at Lee. Then, of course, there was the unloading. It was over for a day . . exhaustion! Life begins.. Beth Homner receives help unloading her car. Everyone has finally moved in and the campus is quiet. Students begin semester with registration. 50 A long line is always expected lor registration. Dorm life starts again for Carol Chastain. 51 and grows fuller An ice cream cone, a talk with a friend, or just a long rest under a tree broke the monotony. Beanies were begrudgingly •worn by freshmen and identified them everywhere. Study was mixed with snacks and formed a livable, if not plea- sant, concoction. Freshmen are honored to wear beanies during Frosh Week. Mike Roberts finds that campus life is sometimes very interesting. 52 Judy Omdahl caught in a flirtations glance! Barbie Heffor seen in concentration. Will Compton and Larry Winters look over the campus scene. 53 Fall has many faces In the early fall a number of young men and women de- scend on the campus of Lee College. Before they come, Lee is dad. There is a quiet solitude about it. When they arrive, everything breaks loose. Star- ry-eyed freshmen and those social beings the upperclass- men try to outdo each other. Gene Cotton ' s performance was a great hit with the students. Football was a popular sport in the fall. Freshmen were always up to something constructive. 54 Paul Hammonds is trying to decide who has the cutest smile — Nancy Burkholder or her friend. Chi Cruise Moonlight, smiles, entertain- ment, sloppy joes and the burgun- dy and grey are what make up the annual Chi Cruise. Again this year ATX scored a striking success in a romantic cruise down the Ten- nessee River. The lights were dim, the water smooth and the company superb. Tanya, Darla, and Sandy perform for the Chi Cruise. The glow of the moon will reflect many memories for Richard and Anita. The Chi Cruise presents many and varied activities! After a long day ' s chase, Beth and Ralph enjoy relaxing before the fire. 57 Dorm L ife In the dorm: these were places of dark halls and empty rooms— -until cur- few! Then everyone de- scended en masse to study, talk, sing, or just have fun. Some even practiced interior decorating. Guys are eager to take time out to pose for a picture. There is always time in the dorm for music and gossip Busy Paul Hammonds is taking time to call Cross Hall. With the snow, wind, sleet and rain came cold, wet, rolled snow- ballers; hairspray and combs, frowns, and wet, cold bodies. Parties and just about anything else you want to talk about came during the winter. These things, as any conscientious Lee student knows, make up the bulk of a school year. Then there was Christmas. Everyone tried to outdo himself in celebrating the end of another semester. Classes held Christmas parties for their mem- bers and Delta Zeta Tau sponsored a big blowout for the entire student body. To end the year on a good note, the Circle K club collected money for the March of Dimes. Circle K ' s Sweetheart, Priscilla Combs, performs at their Sing- A-Thon. The Christmas spirit is exemplified by Tanya Trimble ' s song. The cold doesn ' t seem to bother Mike Hanks and Ron McLuhan. Terry Griffey gives Sonia Lane a quick squeeze on a cold winter ' s night. A banquet for the girls and their escorts opened the Pageant ' s activities. Later a fireside get-together, interviews with the judges, and rehearsals filled the last week before the big event. The Seasons of Love were presented by Miss Sheila Roddy. Circle K was well represented by its sweetheart, Miss Priscilla Combs. For her talent presentation, Miss Betty Freeze chose a medley of popular songs. 91 Miss Parade of Favorites Miss Sonia Lane reigns as Miss Parade of Favorites 1970. Sonia is from Jacksonville, Florida, and represented the Varsity bas- ketball team in the competition. She was chosen by the judges on the bases of talent, poise, beauty, and intelligence. Her talent presentation was an adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson ' s story The Little Match Girl which she closed with the song Who Can I Turn To. The judges turned to her, and she was crowned favorite. Miss Lane is president of Delta Zeta Tau, Vindagua Campus Life editor, and a past Dream Girl of Upsilon Xi. As the days grew longer in October the Vikings prepared for the coming season. Now the season is ended and the record reads like this; a 23-6 won-loss record, one SCAC conference trophy, one SCAC tournament trophy, and a third place trophy in the NCCAA. A great deal of hard work and dedication brought the team together. In- creased experience and the re- turn of David Monty Mont- gomery gave hints of what the season was to unveil. Dave Montgomery returned this year after a year ' s absence because of a leg injury. He led in scoring with 499 points and had 267 rebounds to his credit. Greg Cain displays his quickness as he drives past Jeff Heath of Temple. Senior David Montgomery ' s jump shot is the reason he was the leading scorer. An inexperienced staff at- tempted to resurrect the sheet and launch it on a radically new course. Their efforts will not be fully seen for some years. The paper is published monthly and on special occasions such as Homecoming and College day. An interesting note is that the Homecom- ing issue of ' 69 appeared two days after the event. These problems arose in spite of the dedicated efforts of Kendall and staff. New proposals were made and submitted to the administration which would allow the monthly newspaper to become a magazine, a position which no doubt it would fill more equitably. Kendall Gentry talks it over with Linda Salvage. Sue Small, Daryl Smallwood, Shirley Anthony, Emma Grey Randall, Patsy Herron, Gail Royal Yvonne Nelson, Brenda Smith, David Rathbone 155 VINDAGUA Taking pictures, meeting deadlines, work- ing nightlong hours, losing minds, and hav- ing fun — all of this went into putting out the 1969 VINDAGUA. Aside from merely putting out a book, the VINDAGUA staff had several other activities throughout the year. In January, the staff presented the annual Parade of Favorites. The staff took a weekend Spring vacation to the resort town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Ice skating, picnicking and horseback riding were the main forms of weekend recreation. Planned carefully, it all started -with beanies which reluctant members of the fresh- man tribe placed on various parts of the body. The head led the list of most used methods of wearing said beanie, but hip pocket and inside-out followed closely. The two-week era, which is the meaning of fortnight, ended graciously for many in the Dating Game activities sponsored by the soon to be alumni. Many seniors practiced their future careers on unsuspecting, innocent, yet receptive children by involving them- selves in Student Teaching. The annual Senior Banquet ended a year with the question which has resounded again and again throughout this book. GO YE Every heart without Christ is a mission field and every heart with Christ is a missionary. Youth want a challenge. They want a cause for which they can live and die. This great need is fulfilled in missions. Christ commanded: Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Alive in 1970. By Divine will, immeasurable capacity For good or evil is granted us — The greatest that man has known. I Corinthians 13:3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profiteth me nothing. Out of fear, resentment, tradition, or sincere mis- understanding This capacity for right— This power is shunned, And shunned, it stagnates- — Spawning wrong use, selfish motives, Warped philosophies, sick societies. Faults obvious, inadequacies inherent, guilt justified, Our commission not diminished. Our responsibility ever present; We must strive on To try, to improve, to live. Our commission apparent, Our motivation unique, We must strive and gain and realize. God- — Our strength, Jesus Christ — Our model, Love — -Our challenge. For the Christian Nothing more is asked, Nothing less accepted. J ' WHJtam 6. Squires literary Cleveland, Tennessee 264 NOT TO BE TAKEN OUT ...■■.
