SCM8ES L CLEVELAND, TFNNf sk X : K • - 1961-VINDAGUA LEE COLLEGE CLEVELAND, TENNESSEE EDITOR: MARTHA SMITH ASSOCIATE EDITOR: MARY RUTH MORRIS BUSINESS MANAGER: PHILIP MORRIS FOREWORD J.fSa Praise ye the Lord. Praise ye the Lord from the heavens: praise him in the heights. Praise ye him, all his angels: Praise ye him, all his hosts. Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. Let them praise the name of the Lord: for he commanded, and they were created, Psalm 148:1-5. Long, long ago when strangers marched into Canaan and began to conquer the land, the native tribes asked their new neighbors, Now, you Israelites, who is your God? Each nation had gods — many gods — who performed rival miracles with other gods of other nations. The Jews related how the Lord God had freed Israel from Egyptian bondage; how He had swept back the waves of the Red Sea and allowed them to walk through on its dry bed; how He had miraculously fed the children of Israel on their forty-year journey through the wilderness, and oh, so many amazing things! This did not impress their neighbors, however, for they claimed equal miracles from their gods. The nations asked again, Who is your God? The Psalmist David declared, For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods. For the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens, Psalm 96:4, 5. He who made the stars! He is our God. This is the great divine Credential; there is no great- er. It is He who makes the silvery-haired com- ets to streak through the sky. His hand wrought the glorious spectacle of thousands of sparkling jewels dangling in black velvet. His breath stirred the celestial dust of the Milky Way and His word spoke the galaxies into existence. His will decreed the sun, King of Day, and declared the moon, Guardian of Night. It is He who suspended the Earth on nothing and wonderfullv made her to be in- habited. The Maker is our Piedeemer and Comforter. If one should stargaze in a certain season of the year, he would behold a special cre- ation of God. In late September about eight o ' clock, arching across the sky, is the Milky Way. At the top of this arch is a constella- tion called Cygnus, the most precious constel- lation to all stargazing Christians. Cygnus is a cross carved in starlight. It moves slowly westward across the sky until, at Christmas- tide, it stands upright on the western horizon, giving a special meaning to the season. The nightly appearance of the cross in the sky is regarded as the evening ' s call to worship. How many times have we gazed into the heavens and wondered about the stars. We remember the miracle of the Star of Beth- lehem. Some wonder, What are we in re- lation to the stars? We are really much more fortunate than they. The stars have existed for millions of years, but we shall live for- ever. The stars have not once spoken a word, breathed a breath, heard a sound, enjoyed beauty, nor loved another star! As wonderful as stars are, we are more wonderful, complex, and mysterious. The stars exist — we live! Christ is our life-giver, the great Celestial Sovereign, and the Bright and Morning Star! He is our hope, for He is coming soon. The Bible says it, the Christian believes it, and the heavens declare it. In the evenings, as we behold the beauty and magnificence of God ' s creation and re- member the words of Jesus , I will come again, can we say from the depths of our souls, Even so, come Lord Jesus. — Editor. The philosophy held must make the man pure in heart, gracious and benevolent in manner, kind in word and deed. There is one who fits this description well because of his quiet and sincere dedication to his tasks. He has done much for those about him, for he has faith in Lee and her students. This is most evident in his kind and sym- pathetic interest in each individual and in his patient ef- forts to solicit financial aid for those in need. An alumnus of Lee, he has also served Lee devoted- ly for the past eleven years as Dean of Men, Principal of the High School, Dean of the Junior College, President of Lee College, and presently serves as Registrar. To one whose life is arrayed with serene beauty, and is beheld as a guiding star by all of us, we humbly and sincerely dedicate the 1961 Vindagua to the Reverend R. L. Piatt. BIBLE COLLEGE SENIORS ROBERT STEVENS Sponsor To the Bible College Seniors of 1961: Your spirit is characterized by the flame of enthu- siasm you possess in the pursuit of truth. While you have sought the true light, first of all with loyalty io your convictions, you have not let prejudice and bias keep you from modifying ideas and seeking both spirit- ual growth and mental attainment. Your diligence in intellectual matters has not kept you from developing your keen personal feelings. These feelings will mean as much to you in the field of Christian service as your knowledge; for they will enable you to stand where the masses have stood, sit where they have sat, and know what they have known. HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS HOPE KINSER HALL Sponsor On the day of commencement, having now reached one of our plateaus in the climb to success, we can view the accomplishments of our years at Lee Academy with pride. We have shared profitable and fruitful hours together that will benefit us and the kingdom of God. After we think of days gone by, we turn our thoughts to our new goals before us. We all have the joy of knowing that the higher we climb, the farther we are from where we have been; and the closer we are to where we are going. E. 4th Avenue Fort Lauderdale, Florida The Friendly Church in the Venice of America C. D. Harris, Pastor The 1960- ' 61 school year has ended, and we hope happy memories will be stirred as you leaf through the 1961 Vindagua. However, this yearbook would not have been possible without the help and cooperation of many, who have given untiringly of their time, efforts, and understanding. Special thanks go to our sponsors, Mrs. Lois Beach, Mrs. Beatrice Odom, and Marvin Golden, for their guidance, counsel, and encouragement during the time we were working on the book. Al- ways they were willing to spend extra hours making phone calls, checking on the dummy, work- ing with copy, and straightening out difficulties in general. Their kind assistance is greatly appre- ciated. We appreciate also the fine cooperation of the administration and faculty for their interest. The teachers often had reason to complain when their classes were interrupted bv picture ap- pointments — but they seemed to understand that deadlines had to be met, regardless of the diffi- culties. Our photographer, Lavon Riley of Athens, Tennessee, was very cooperative in taking pictures. Many times he came at his inconvenience to be of service to us. Southern Photo Process Engraving Company of Atlanta, Georgia, has worked hand in hand with the staff in preparing the engravings used in the annual. The personnel of the Church of God Publishing House, as always, have done a commendable job of printing the book. In short, we just say, Thank you, to everyone who had a part, large or small, in making the 1961 Vindagua what it is. — Martha Smith, Editor.
